- For months the city of Bakhmut has been the epicentre of the war in Ukraine.
Almost all of the city’s 70,000 residents have fled.
Russia is conducting an onslaught on the city in an attempt to capture it but so far its Ukrainian defenders have held firm.
Bakhmut is strategically important and its fall would advance Russia’s hopes of capturing Kramatorsk and Slovyansk, key cities in Ukraine’s Donbas region.

Old people are unique in war zone. In winter war 1939 one Karelian old man was ordered by Finnish soldiers to evacuate so his house would be burned down in order to prevent the Russian use his home. He did just asked, packed his luggages, left and his house was burned down. The next day soldiers found the same old man walking around the burned ruins of his house and mumbling himself. The soldiers asked why did he come back. The man smiled sarcastically and said: "This house was burned three times. My grandfather burned it and my father burned it too. And always the reason was to not let Russians use the house as a shelter. I am here just check that you burned it down good enough."

- Fighting continues around Bakhmut and across the wider Donbass region;
- Russian missile and drone strikes continue for several days now;
- Ukrainian sources claim “all” drones were downed but damage to infrastructure proves otherwise;

I remember when they said Bakmut had no strategic importance a month ago down playing the Russian attack now they say it’s a the road to two of the most important cities in Donbas.
It's of marginal importance only. It's more about Russia trying to show they are making progress than anything else.
And then they will call it unimportant once more, when the city is no longer sustainable to defend. Which works for BBC and then likes considering their impressionable readers who have memory capacity of goldfishes.
It's that Bakhmut has some tactical importance, but little strategic importance in the bigger picture. That still doesn't mean Ukraine wants to lose the city, and it still holds large political importance. Russia taking it would be a blow, but it doesn't lend itself to a wider strategy for winning the war.
