    The use of the all-female crew was literally something I just didn't notice while watching this movie. It wasn't used as the major selling point for the movie, never felt like the director was asking for brownie points for it--it just blended in.

    The most terrifying scene to me is the scene in the lighthouse with the humanoid. It was the sheer helplessness of it all. It wasn't like the bear that was deliberately hunting her. This was just a creature of such unfathomable strangeness, that the sheer act of it unconsciously mimicking you can kill you, or keep you trapped for the rest of your life. To this creature, she was so insignificant that destroying her would be inconsequential, and done with no malice.
    It's like it's the biological equivalent of a fundamental physical law. It mimicked her, simply because that was the law it represents. _For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction._ I don't even think the phosphorous bomb killed it. I think adhering to its own law destroyed it. The fire from the the bomb burned it, and it mimicked the destructive nature of the fire, which increased the overall destructiveness, which it then mimicked. And it continued that, until it was destroyed. You can't kill it, technically. But you can work within the law it represents to convince it to destroy itself.

    - also not really a sin, but for everyone wondering about the ending: in their personal lives, all the main characters had a self-destructive feature. hence the scenes showing the main scientist cheating on her husband, despite feeling actually happy in her relationship. the same goes for when one of them admits it was struggling with cancer etc. the alien dies at the end because it assimilates the main character and starts reproducing her self-destructive behavior. the whole movie is themed around self-destruction, which is why it's called Annihilation

I'm kinda frustrated that half of the sins that aren't jokes were the movie's point, like that the scientist ignoring clear data in front of her is making a point that it doesn't matter how "smart" or good at what you do you are, if you're in emotional peril (and she was particularly; the guy they cut open had the same tattoo as her!), you fall into denial towards the clearest evidence. Okay, regarding the whole "refracting DNA" thing, the reason why our DNA works like it does is because the molecules that make it up interact w/ each other in a fixed set of ways. And the reason why those interactions exist is because of fundamental forces and subatomic particles, all of which are *wave-like* excitations of a number of different fields. Assuming you could refract the probability wave functions that define all of quantum physics, you could change how DNA, proteins, and enzymes work, creating the mutations you see in Annihilation.

    • @luismartinez7964
      @luismartinez7964 Před 3 lety +11

      Would you really be able to refract a probability wave function? You’re right in saying that all subatomic particles have wave like properties, but refraction is classical mechanics, would that work in the quantum realm? The mechanics there are probabilistic not deterministic, and so, the concept of refracting a probability wave function perhaps doesn’t make too much sense from my understanding.

      Luis Martinez For quantum mechanics, wave functions *can* reflect, refract etc. (btw we do not refer to the probability wave doing something, we find what the *wavefunction* does and then convert to a probability density function). Refraction at its core is still wave behaviour, think Huygens model or wave packets.

The only way 'dna refracted' would make sense is since the zone inside the shimmer is genetically unstable, there are a lot of random DNA sequences in the environment and the sci fi nature of the shimmer allows those DNA fragments to enter the body and merge into the cells' DNA by constant recombination. Like transposons but it's frequency amped up a billion times (and they can penetrate the skin and transform into cells)

    This film needed some serious sinning for the kindergarten level of scientific analysis they managed in however many years it was the shimmer had been there. I mean, you've never even had anybody return? Surely first human test you send someone two steps inside and tell them to come straight back out, then test them for a month, tie a rope to them and pull them out if necessary. Did this whole facility get their science qualifications on the back of a cereal box or what? When they do get inside, they see a huge croc with crazy mutations and nobody thinks, hmmm he's older than a couple of years, the shimmer must be mutating existing creatures in here. No definitely as a scientist we have no interest in huge mutated crocs, we see that shit all the time, could have been anything, definitely doesn't mean that we're all being mutated as we speak, which might have been nice to know?

      He missed a lot. Like how he asks where the girl’s clothes went literally right after talking about how the shimmer refracts EVERYTHING. Obviously it refracted the clothes too. Plus, sinning a science fiction story for daring to have fictional science? Plus, “considering” it a horror when it’s literally a science fiction psychological horror already? I get these vids are jokes for the most part, but this one felt sloppy. Seemed like he didn’t get it and wrote it off with some surface level jokes. Kinda disappointing because I love this channel and was so excited to get some nuanced jokes based on what was actually a brilliant plot once you unravel it.

You don’t dive in to rescue someone because you need to maintain visual contact as much as you can, so no diving board. And yes there is also a shallow end because when rescuing someone you brings them to the shallows.
