My grandfather's grandfather (Charles Wood) emigrated from Concord Massachusetts to California in 1852, via the Nicargua route. My grandfather knew this story well - and even visited Nicaragua to better appreciate the experience. After arriving in California, my Great Great Grandfather and his brother worked in the foothills selling goods to miners and served as guides between San Francisco and the Gold Country.
