    I got into cassettes last year as a sort of analogue Pomodoro timer for random tasks. And since you can find all kinds of incredible international music out thrifting (for almost nothing), often times with incredible musicianship that's not available online, it's been fun way to go treasure hunting and stay on task for things. Set a task, click it in, press play & enjoy the wobble wobble 😅. Take a break on Side B!

    Fiio has brand new player out now as well (cp13). It doesn't have Bluetooth or recording (recording on WAR isn't very good either), but has less wow&flutter and is slightly smaller. It is similarly priced and might be better available depending on your location.
    For anyone considering recording: there has only ever been few pocket-sized recorders ever that were able to record above dictation quality, and they are expensive even if broken. Find an old boombox or bigger.

    I had a big tape collection when CDs came on the scene and there are a lot of obscure things I had that never turned up on CD or was very rare. I was about to consider this for the Bluetooth but if the sound is off maybe I need to rip them to digital instead to use on the go. I still have Fisher and Kenwood dual decks for home play. I am a fossil I guess.

      Most prerecorded tapes were not only high quality sound, they had some excellent analogue machines to drive them. Just before digital CD came out, analogue, in every sector of Hi-fi, had a most reached a pinnacle of performance, so, like I started with initially, any tapes I could get a hold of, then I started getting TDK SA, tapes. These were constantly superior sound recording quality, next, TDK SAX. Finally, I found that DENON HD 100's were really good, it was such a shame how cassettes lost their crown to digital CD, but hey, such is tech.

    its interesting ... shame it uses not so good tech inside compared to even really old stuff
    like the walkman 2 and later revisions showing how clever they were shrinking the size
    but at the same time improving the whole listening experience on the go ... shame ...
    still the music experience of going to the record store and getting the latest album and

      I gather there's like one Chinese OEM left making cassette tape mechanisms, and they're all super cheapified descendants of 80s/90s Japanese ones. They're mechanically complex enough and demand is low enough no one is investing any money into developing a modern high quality transport.

  • @Infinite_Ouroboros
    @Infinite_Ouroboros Před 5 měsíci +8

    Get a Walkman D6C. Don't have to worry about sound quality with that thing. ALL modern cassette decks unfortunately suffer from the same issue, they use the same tanashin mechanism which is cheap and noisy.
    Mid range late 1990s walkmans sound way better so it's worth picking one up and fixing it.

    Like most people, you purchased a very low end cassette player(I don't mean brand) and also purchases a worn out cassette album that was recorded on a low end Type 1 cassette tape but don't get me wrong I made plenty of those kind of purchases also, until I purchased my first higher end Sony EX portable cassette player that 95% of people did not even know existed at the time, especially the ones that did not want a cassette player that cost $200 at the time when the average cassette Walkman's (SONY, JVC, Panasonic, Etc.) only cost about $20-$50, Sony EX Players even made worn out type 1 cassette tapes sound good but the real surprise came from Type 2 and 4 cassette tapes that were recorded with my higher end Sony ES deck with Dolby S from my higher end Sony ES CD Player, my later Sony EX Walkman even had Track Skip and Replay like my Sony ES Cassette Deck and now that Hi-Res audio has come out we can make even better sounding cassette recordings because the source is even more detailed

      it doesn't have a biasing switch, It can't even play type ii tapes. It shouldn't even be playing type i's, this thing is a useless crap mechanism not even suited for data tapes on a commodore 64 thrown in an aluminum case for some reason

    • @KekmanForTheRestOfTheWorld
      @KekmanForTheRestOfTheWorld Před 5 měsíci +3

      @@WalnutSpice Ever used one of the cheaper late 90s Sony Walkmans like EX172 etc? They might have a bias switch, but it feels more like an EQ really. They seem to be pushing treble on normal setting and pushing bass/mids/mud on the type ii setting. this causes type ii to sound 'better' on normal setting. A type two on type ii setting usually sounds a bit muddy but ofc less hiss since the highs are cut.
      Even Sony had problems regarding biasing on their cheaper made in china models in the late 90s. to expect them to get it right today with probably even worse parts is a bit overblown.
      I doubt anybody will build a walkman as good as the top models of the last century anymore. They simply can't because they can't get the parts. We are stuck with gimmicky little machines until somebody invests a lot of money, designes and builds a high a end model and then sells them for probably way more than 1000$.
      Maybe sometime some DSP chip will come to the rescue, but that of course will not be pure analog anymore.

    • @KekmanForTheRestOfTheWorld
      @KekmanForTheRestOfTheWorld Před 5 měsíci +5

      Nobody uses Dolby NR anymore. Dolby dosn't license it anymore and the chips are probably not even being produced anymore.

    But if a 30 year old EX walkman that's 1/3 the size, sounds remarkably better and costs less, why wouldn't you just do that? You can buy them with the belt already swapped easily enough for less money than a WAR brick, but it's really not that hard to do if you really had to. The record function is terrible and you wouldn't even want to use it past the first time.
