Traumatized by the memory, she channels the experience into a force for change and emerges as a formidable campaigner against Female Genital Mutilation at the highest political echelons.
Based on the testimony of global FGM activist Ifrah Ahmed, the film is written and directed by Mary McGuckian.

I met Ifrah Ahmed in person while I was working in Somalia. I worked with her for few weeks on ending FGM. I knew she was going to be an icon for women activism. The movie addresses a series issue in our community that requires a solution as so many young girls are suffering under harsh environment that doesn’t favor them in any means. Ifrah is a great example of such girls and she deserves the recognition given in this movie.
It’s a beautiful film but I wish they had found a Somali actress

This is wrong on so many levels. They are making money of us (somalis) by not even including us. This is disgusting Honestly. So for every Non somali out Here saying «it’s not a big deal” it really is a big deal. She can’t even speak Somali? The problem is not that she dosen’t look Somali, everyone is beautiful and Somalis can come in every shade and shape. But the problem is the fact that nothing about this woman is Somali. And nothing about this has to do with Somalia. They just love using ‘Somali’ in everything.
I love her as an actress but her accent imitation was not really great lol I definetly agree with you. I am Ethiopian we east africans don't get enough represenation so this would have been a good opportunity to be representative but Hollywood didn't get the message yet.

The narrowmindedness here in comments is unreal. She is an actress. Actors can play any nationality or any character thats why its called acting. They act out of the character so you don't need to 'be' the person you are acting. So according to the logic in the comments below no actor can portray any character unless they have the same nationality as that character. How stupid is that?

I cried after seeing this I actually remembered the time I was visiting back home and my mother’s family decided to kidnap my sisters and I and perform fgm. Fgm is the most inhumane thing you can do to young girls. Islam doesn’t even allow it. I don’t understand why it happens. I am a victim of fgm as I am writing this down I am actually crying. Fathers please protect your daughter my mom had us when she was 15 she was very young her stupid family made the decision for her. I don’t even see myself forgiving them and I am 26 years old today. There times I even wanted to leave my own religion but then I did a research and found out this practice is not accepted in the Islamic culture. It came from Pharoah the Egyptian guy.
