I still think Victorian Clara would have been much more interesting than a modern Clara. Back to back modern fay companions got boring quickly. Victorian Clara would have been perfect to break that mold. It would have been so much more interesting

Modern Clara's the most multifaceted and unique companion in New Who, with only Jack Harkness being in the same ballpark. Russell T Davies tended to write basic character arcs (and sometimes even destroyed those arcs, most notable with Donna) and only took real risks with Jack because he was the star of Torchwood, where Davies felt comfortable enough to get away with darker material. Even Amy and Rory floundered in their final season, particularly with that divorce bullshit. Granted, Moffat could have given Victorian Clara the same amount of depth as the real Clara though, so having her be from Victorian times throughout her entire run could still have worked.

@@tomnorton4277 The only thing I found weird is the next episodes has the perfect setup for Victorian Clara to get modern day knowledge. Granted they never use it again, but when modern day Clara gets uploaded and the Doctor saves her, she is the one who starts hacking in the cafe. Having taken knowledge with her back, so all they would have had to do is have the episode be set on that same day, have Victorian Clara get uploaded and redownloaded. And now you could just say that all of common knowledge of human history up to that point she now also had. Just so that she wouldn't be so hard to write for in terms of needing to update her on every advancement from her time to modern day.
At the same time in the long run, it worked when they finally squash them possibly ending up getting romantically involved. You could probably get to the same point with either version once Capaldi shows up. But one thing I felt modern day Clara lacked in the beginning was that really fun verbal sparring that the Victorian version had. In an effort to make her be different, she still get's a few singers in here and there, but it seemed toned down. Like I said though it all works out in the end.
A companion from past could be great weve had present and future in new but not past afaik
One thing I liked about Victorian Clara was that she said "It's smaller on the outside", a subversion of the classic line virtually every companion says upon seeing the Tardis's inside.
I consider this to be one of the best of the 11th Doctor era. To me, everything works, except - yes, the "one word" bit. Grant is SO creepy evil! And my God, Jenna Coleman is gorgeous. The TARDIS in the sky - brilliant. The memory worm and Strax is great fun. The Snowmen themselves are terrific, not at all Sil-lee (bulls?) I also think the Ice Nanny works fine. "Sherlock" taking on the GI is inspired. And I even find Grant's Puppet-version act to be hysterically acceptable. I remember being shocked when Clara was grabbed and taken over the edge. Also, the new TARDIS interior was incredible. Great ep. And great review!

I didn't notice when I watched it the first time, but Simmon does have parallels to Amy with the alien imaginary friend thing. It's an interesting look into what could potentially have happened to Amy if she had been unfortunate enough to encounter an evil alien when she was a little girl.
I don't think the "one word test" is about whether Clara is lying or not. That's just some fancy misdirection by Vastra. It's about what word she chooses, out of thousands of possible words. It's meant to reveal her priorities, her psychology, etc. Sort of like a Rorschach test. Sure, it's bunk and stupid and only serves to let her say "pond", but I don't think it's dumb for the same reasons you do.
I like that scene because it helps to give Vastra a completely unique personality. She's not just "the lesbian lizard woman". She has her own way of looking at things which may be a bit overly simplistic in some areas but helps to create a more fleshed out person. My favourite Vastra scene is in her last episode - why on Earth didn't Moffat ever use the Paternosta Gang again after Deep Breath? - where she's wearing her veil whilst judging Clara. That's also completely unique to Vastra, a trait you won't find in any other character.
Moffat doesn't get enough credit for how well he writes women. He doesn't aim for stupid feminist talking points that will be dated within a few years, he aims for their psychology and actually trying to understand how they think. Even when he's pushed into doing virtue signalling bullshit by the BBC, he takes the time to treat his characters as more than just diversity hires. Missy could have very easily crashed and burned due to being a gender swapped version of one of the Doctor's most iconic and beloved villains but she's become as popular as any other incarnation of the Master because Moffat actually knows how to write women. Michelle Gomez is a great actress but without Moffat's writing to back her up, the Mistress would have failed, although probably not as badly as the 14th Doctor did (yes, I said 14th because John Hurt is the true 9th Doctor and should be acknowledged as such).

Actually it isn't that stupid to say Pond. This is Clara from after Name of the Doctor. She knows the doctor and she knows what would get him to help. It didn't make sense at first, but then again, nothing about her made sense at that point. It's just another part of the mystery.

Didn't know that Victorian Clara was supposed to be the companion at first, and I'm not sure what to think about that. The idea of a non-present day companion is cool, but this way, we at least got to see more than one Clara echo. In fact, I wish there had been one or two more echoes before her joining the TARDIS.
But speaking of companions out of time, you know what would be kinda fun? A companion from the recent past, 70s-00s.

Even before The Name of the Doctor, this plus Asylum of the Daleks set up the gimmick of Clara dying to save the Doctor. I found it a bit jarring and disappointing when they had 2 one-off versions followed by “real” Clara who then stuck around for a couple seasons. And once Name of the Doctor explained the “duplicates”, it became an even bigger missed opportunity. You want to _really_ ramp up the mystery? Have 11 keep meeting Claras, and no matter what he does, he keeps failing to save them. Maybe the audience knows that Clara sacrifices herself intentionally, but 11 doesn’t. Don’t have her die every single ep-that would get old fast, or turn into farce. But once the 3rd one dies, when she’s not a guest-Star and it’s not a special, we’d’ve been on edge the rest of the time, wondering why he _keeps_ meeting the same person and she _keeps_ dying-we’d no longer be able to just assume she would survive because she’s the companion. And we could’ve had 11 meet another Clara and absolutely refuse to have anything to do with her, afraid that he would just get her killed like the others.
@@natbarmore but then how would you have that payoff to the arc by the end? All you're really doing is dragging out the mystery more than 7b did. Remember, the BBC had forced Moffat to squeeze in an entire series arc in a technical half of the series. And they made him slash the budget of series 7b to be the cheapest half of an already cheap series to begin with (due to the world cup being more of a priority than just letting Moffat have a 2012 and 2013 series) just so he could have a decent budget for the day of the doctor. He had to work with what he was given while still paying off the arc.
This was a great Christmas special. Too bad Victorian Clara didn't get more of a chance to travel with the Doctor before she died, I know it needed to happen for the plot to move forward with the Impossible Girl story arc, but she was the best version of Clara to intertact with the 11th Doctor. She had the right amount of smarts, sass and beauty to entice and intrigue him to come out of his melancholoy state. I even like how she was flirtatious with him, and I'm not one who normally likes Doctor/ Companion romantic relationships, but these two play well off each other. The setting is fitting for a Christmas special and I like pretty much like all the characters and how they interact with each other in the story. And the Tardis on top of the clouds is one best images in the modern era of Who. I'll happily replay this holiday classic every Christmas season and wish I was up in the clouds over London with the both of them. Thanks for the video!
They could have dropped that whole Impossible Girl thing anyway, it didn't really go anywhere and just built Clara up way too much.
@@lucasoheyze4597 Well, I always kind of liked the Impossible Girl story arc but I must admit that Clara is my favorite companion so I tend to see it more favorably then most. I know how others don't like it because it seems to make Clara overly important and essential to the Doctor, that she is the most important companion that ever was and that she somehow delegates every other companion to an inferior status. I don't see it that way but I realize that other fans who have a different favorite companion would see it differently. In the end it worked for some people and not for others. That's one of the reasons why Clara gets a lot of the hate as she does I think, so be it. I still love her. 💘
Wouldn’t it have been easier for this to be a past version of Strax and the gang to keep the events of a good man goes to war after this.

Considering how much the show went timey-wimey with the Doctor's encounters with River, it's amazing that with all the other characters he meets them in chronological order.

@@hamoiq908 And when they first introduced Sacha Dharwan's Master, I was really hoping he would be the pre-Yana/Simm Master. It would have made so much sense... 1) the fact he's completely unhinged, 2) the first episode where he said "someone destroyed Gallifrey"... how cool would it have been to have a story where he has just survived the Time War and discovers that the Doctor destroyed Gallifrey?
But no, instead we get a post-Missy Master who has survived because reasons and reverted to the Simm-mentality Master because reasons. And obviously the "destruction of Gallifrey" was a different destruction, part of the Timeless Child nonsense. What a disaster.
@@TPH250290 yeah literally that sounds like such an amazing arc especially with how much character development they gave missy and then they just threw it away. Your story sounds so much better than the timeless child plotline you should become a who writer for sure

Small correction: Victorian Clara DOES have a slightly altered name. Her full name is *Clara Oswin Oswald* while modern Clara's full name is just Clara Oswald.(No middle name)

Really wish Victorian Clara was the companion we got going forward I loved her in this episode she was so much fun
I still think the word should have been children. ‘Pond’ was ok and pulled at the heat strings. But apart from the connection to Amy and Rory (which Clara didn’t know about) I don’t see how that informs the Doctor of the danger. Where as if she said ‘children’ not only would it have linked to 11th’s second episode where Amy says he only interferes if he sees a child cry, but would connect more to the danger. As Victorian Clara was worried about the kids in her care. But that’s just my opinion. I still loved this episode. The paternoster Gang are some of my fav side characters in Doctor who.
It would have been a lot more realistic if ice lady was attacking everyone, and it just cut to the Doctor clear on the other side of the city, looking at a duck pond super confused
My theory is that Victorian Clara had enough memory of being in the Doctor's Time Stream to remember the Ponds. She's seen the Doctor's entire life, apart from John Hurt's battles in the Time War which were no doubt blocked by the Time Lock, so she would at least have a vague idea of who Amy and Rory are. Real Clara said she remembered "a bit" of her echo lives in Day of the Doctor so why wouldn't her other incarnations?
Clara did know about the connection to Amy and Rory. From Clara's perspective, she's already been travelling with the doctor for a while, and the TARDIS showed her a photo of Amy, so it's not unrealistic that she knows about them.
I remember really enjoying this episode. Seeing a new side of the Doctor consumed by his heartbreak and depression and then Clara strolling in and just breathing the light back into his world. It has it's faults yes. It is not perfect but I love the vibe of it. Victorian London is always a perfect setting for Christmas because of A Christmas Carols so it retains that Christmassy feel throughout. I like the 11/Clara era. I know a lot of people don't like it and love to hate on it but I Like those two as a pairing. It's a fun and bouncy dynamic. It feels fresh and full of new energy. A solid episode. Not perfect but not hideous. Just comfortingly pleasant. Sometimes I don't always want something spectacular and crazy. It's Christmas day. I have eaten my body weight is chocolate and turkey and those of us over 18 have probably been drinking since 10am (I was only 14 when this ep aired so no booze for me) I don't want to use my brain on Christmas day. I just wanna sit like an upturned turtle in my tacky jumper and fuzzy socks and just enjoy what's on the telly and not move for an hour or two and this episode is designed for that.

I really loved the visuals in this one, and I am glad they gave Richard E Grant another appearance down the line.
The memory worm scene also acts as a covert Chekhov’s Gun, setting up within what appears to be a self-contained comedic scene as a key part of the climax.
Richard E Grant is a real highlight in this episode.
Moffat squandered the return of the Great Intelligence really but Richard E Grant and Sir Ian McKellen are gold in pretty much everything anyway.
Honestly, I'd have been much happier with Clara as a character if it had been this Clara that travels with him

@@RoyalMudcrab Yeah, I've always been neutral with Clara, but I can admit that Victorian Clara would be so much less boring compared to modern Clara. Luckily with my companions, I started with typical moderns before drifting off to the more diverse ones
If there is one thing I love about Series 7 in general tho
It’s that it is beautifully shot with very impressive visuals.
I know I don’t like Vastra that much, but the scene with her and Clara is gorgeous. I just love stained glass aesthetics so much, I really wish media could do more of that more often

@@NileSWPhotography I can see why people were just alienated and Doctor Who lost its popularity during this series tho. This episode does no justice to anyone and just possess off people on all corners. The episode was a mess and it only got better towards the end after the restaurant scene.
And also the epilogue with Matt Smiths final appearance as the Doctor. THAT left me devastated

6:22 And that's why I (and many) wished she was the original Clara, to mix things up. Big Finish can do companion variety, why couldn't the writing crew at least try to write for someone not from modern day, it's not like she's from the middle ages.
Given her curiosity and quick acceptance of the TARDIS' size paradox, I think after a while she would've gotten the hang of modern technology and society.

Personally, I feel like Victorian Clara could have been a New Who equivalent to Charlie who came from the early 20th Century (8th Doctor companion from Storm Warning to the end of McGann's appearances in the main range).
@@Jedi_Spartan_38 Yeah, when it comes to Clara's character, she was at her best with Smith in her Victorian version, which now makes sense due to that being the original plan (a plan I'm sad was abandoned though I do appreciate the tragedy/redemption aspect of what was done instead), while modern Clara was at her best with Capaldi. And speaking of which, I'm even amazed Vic Clara was even still barely alive after such a long and lengthy fall. Like I know she landed in snow but damn, guess we can attribute it to her stamina as the Impossible Girl.
Honestly, I jus thought that the 'one word rule' was something the Doctor made up deliberately so that he had an excuse to not have to leave his retirement. If he only hears one word about an incident, then he won't end up getting invested.

Husbands of River Song?
@Michael M Now, I do think husbands of river song is a half decent episode on ending alone but it never really stuck out to me as a good episode having just come after the impeccable series 9. I think that husbands of river song is average doctor who and one of the reasons I don’t like it is because I found river quite annoying in the smith era(especially series 6). I think,overall husbands of river song is Moffat trying to tie up a storyline that nobody has cared about for 2 series with the beautiful cherry on top that is the ending,however a lot of the contempt I hold for this is the introduction of Nardole. I’m on 10.4 and I think that nardole is the worst NuWho companion because he doesn’t serve any purpose and even if he’s meant to be comic relief,he’s not funny. Anyway, take everything I said about Nardole with a pinch of salt as I have not watched all of series 10. And remember that it’s just my opinion and you can like this episode if you want to.
@@scourgeofyoutube9448 interesting - I really enjoyed River in Series 6, as they seemed to tap into the absurdity of her timeline (obviously in Let's Kill Hitler it didn't work so well). I haven't seen this episode all through, just clips, but I really love Capaldi and Kingston's chemistry. (Loving Series 9 itself is quite rare, I've only finished 9.4 of that series but also seen Heaven Sent / Hell Bent, weird!)
As for Nardole, thank goodness someone else has roughly the same opinion! I've never really liked him much as a companion either, he's just not funny and honestly keep forgetting he's a cyborg (which is a great concept). No spoilers for Series 10, but Matt Lucas does show his acting chops somewhat in the finale, although his farewell is a little half-baked. (The finale itself is outstanding though, even if it cheaps out in one aspect, which you'll understand when you watch it) Although, gotta say, he's nowhere near as bad as Ryan or Yaz as a companion, as he actually shows some charisma and (kind of) has a character.

I really wanted another companion out of time but instead we got another modern day companion.
Richard E Grant and Ian McKellen definitely should have been given more to work with, but both of them gave a strong performance anyway because they're just damn good

YAY! We've reached the 7B era! I loved your impossible Girl video you did a while ago and I'm looking forward to your reviews of the series half that introduced me to the Whoniverse! Yes, 7B was my first taste of Doctor Who!
My opinion of the patanostra gang is different. As a world builder for Dr Who, RTD could put them to use as an expansion tool for a spin off aimed at the SJA age.
As for strax...just 'cos he's a clone, doesn't mean that Sontarans don't have spawn that have learning difficulties or variants of other MH conditions and that would fit his raison d'etre. An out cast after his initial death and a brain injury thereafter his resurrection?
Would that present you with a change of heart about them all?

Even though Victorian Clara isnt a popular character but how interesting would it be to have a companion not from modern earth for once. Wouldnt it be nice to change it up slightly
From what I've seen, several people wish Victorian Clara had been the Clara who travelled with the Doctor, because not only is she out of time but she and the Doctor have so much chemistry and enjoyable back-and-forth.
Victorian Clara is DEFINITELY popular! A non present day companion with better chemistry would have been so much more interesting :(

I love Strax and that he is played mostly for laughs. This may stem from the fact that have never been able to take Sontarans as a real villainous threat very seriously. Look at them. They were made to be mined for their comedic chops.

It wasn't the Ice Governess that killed Victorian Clara, it was the show's budget, scheduling and that sort of stuff
When I first watched this I was perplexed and honestly kind of mad that the Doctor would kick up such a fuss and have such a shift in character over the loss of Amy and Rory because I felt that he's been through so much already that it was baffling that it'd affect him this much, but looking at it now especially with the perspective of having actually watched quite a lot of classic Who now, I think the shift makes perfect sense, and I actually love how it was handled now.

I fell for Jenna Coleman's character--whatever her name is--from the outset (in ASYLUM OF THE DALEKS). But in this episode, I was wondering...how can this be the same person? IS it the same person? But when she said at the end "Run, you clever boy, and remember me" I realized it HAD to be the same person...so now I had to seevthe rest of the series to figure it out!

No way its nearly been 10 years already since this episode 😳, I remember like it was just yesterday, I asked for the official Doctor Who Magazine for Xmas and my parents got me the Doctor who Adventures instead so I brought the DWM the next day, I remember watching it at my nan and grandads as my mum and stepdad used to travel to Kent to visit family and me and my brother didn't want to go so we stayed with my Dad and grandparents, good times
Matt smith has the best Christmas specials hands down I will not argue about this

One very interesting thing about this episode that could (and perhaps should) have been explored more: it shows that the Doctor doesn't have the moral option NOT to help people, nor does he really get a break from it. He has the knowledge, the opportunity, and the means, and as long as all those things are the case, he really has no right as a privileged person to not do so. This, surely, places quite a burden on him psychologically, as it is unrelenting no matter how heartbroken and spent he may feel, thus contributing to his feeling old and exhausted from time to time.

The Snowmen is a brilliant Christmas adventure with great character work for the doctor and some really cool (pardon the pun) ideas

The return of the great intelligence since the classic. And which is the best Victorian doctor who story?
"Pond" makes perfect sense if Missy is somehow behind The Great Intelligence, since I wouldn't put it past her to be able to engineer situations and psychology such as to enable this setup, since she knows what will make the Doctor do what, since she knows how to make Clara say the right thing to make that happen, and since she wants the two of them to end up together for all the scripts and giggles...
10:48 I watched this episode recently and thought it would work so much better if the the word class used was "Children"
While the Cold new TARDIS interior complaint is warranted, the ability to shoot the set in full 360° for the first time was a great move and it also helped to push the new Grown Up 11th Doctor, so of course he would change the theme to be sleek and cool and shiny
It always confused me why they never had a situation where Clara met another Clara and I hope they have Clara make a cameo at some point although I doubt that will happen since they basically forgot the impossible girl stuff happened as soon as that arc ended

The main problem would be The Doctor having to explain basic modern life things to the companion that we the viewer would already know. The companion is supposed to be the bridge between him and info we wouldn’t know.

I feel like it would have been better if strax was revived by hive mind to where he could just move into a new body I mean his whole kind that we've met were clones, but would that actually be better?

I liked The Doctor from The Snowmen mostly for the fact that it is a version I don't think people have really seen too much before. An old man basically given up on life after having lost the last of his family in the very twilight of his life. Not much more left and not much left to give. Stella performance from Matt Smith.
i mean the pond where the old governess died in is the source of danger but still it feels forced

I liked the doctor the widow and the wardrobe. It was my first Moffat Christmas special, so it holds a special place in my heart. A Christmas carol was honestly bland, and way too obvious of a retelling for me. And I genuinely don't remember totd that well

Ps. As a reviewer/ critic you and us the audience are likely to be adults or 14+ , the show is aimed at a broad age range which is why I don't mind the silliness and illogical plots..

I mean, Sontarans are clones, so instead of just saying they brought Strax back they could have just...cloned him, or he could be Strax, 47th clone and the other the 19th or something. That'd make a lot more sense.
Also Clara never died enough. Really annoying.
I don't think about this episode very often, but it is definitely a good one. I love that they used one of Douglas Adams' (my favourite author) old ideas, as well as the return of the Great Intelligence. Richard E. Grant and Ian McKellen are both fantastic, and it provides a way for Grant - an unofficial Doctor - to be brought back for the 50th. Speaking of which , I've always wondered, since Moffat was about to introduce a 'forgotten' Doctor, and Grant had previously played the Shalka Doctor (who was briefly touted as the the official Ninth Doctor), had he ever considered making that Doctor the War Doctor?
Back to this episode, I really hate the 'one word' scene, it really doesn't make sense. Like you said, why on Earth would Clara think 'Pond' would mean anything? It's all very contrived. I also agree with you about Strax, as much as I like him, I've always cringed at the way Moffat turned him - and the Sontarans in general - into a joke.
Finally, Smith and Coleman really hit it out of the park in this episode, but I really wish Victorian Clara had been the one to travel with the Doctor. I was so excited to think we were breaking away from modern age companions, but then immediately let down. Yes, it was a great subversion of expectations and it worked wonderfully for the story and the season arc, but I still wish the modern show would follow the classic series' lead and get creative with companions again.
Personally, I wish Strax could've been a companion. Imagine one who's a member of a traditionally villainous race becoming The Doctor's companion, like we saw in the spin-off media with Kroton who was a Cyberman.
Imagine all of the opportunities for expanding Strax's character that got wasted by preferring the typical modern-day young female companion over literally any other sort...

A treat from when Doctor Who was an event to mark on the calendar and look forward to with eager anticipation with family and friends all gathered for the event! So unlike the JW/CC era. Let's hope they find a way of making the show a treat again.
People got to remember this show is for kids too , a family show , it cant be too gory or serious , I found as an 11 year old the ice woman and puppet simian scary

I think that thing you showed about aew is a great way of showing the main problem with it, you have to watch too much stuff to understand what is happening. Hell, you missed like 6 wrestling companies from it(GCW, AAA, PWG, Rev Pro, Impact, stardom and maybe even more) I like wrestling companies working together but I shouldn't have to watch 100 different shows to understand why someone is fighting someone.
