- A 2022 video of a young Black Irish girl being seemingly passed over during a medal ceremony went viral and drew worldwide condemnation, but it took about 18 months before Gymnastics Ireland issued a public apology. Haley Ott has more.

The woman who was giving medals had one medal left in her hand when she walked away (with a grin on her face). That's pure racism Ireland. What a shame.
That's terrible. I can't believe people do this! Like, even *if* there were some kind of semi-logical explanation like the medals having names, then STILL I would specifically make sure to stay with THIS child until her medal arrived (or maybe even temporarily giving the one from the last kid in the line and then at the end hopefully I can quickly get the right medal), because being the only black child there I'd want to make absolutely sure she is not singled out.
True, an extra medal that was meant for the young lady. I'm so sorry for the kid. You will do great in the future, Bless her always.

That was definitely intentional and blatant. That woman relished in her cruelty.
There's nothing like the first time experiencing racism, no matter how good of a person you are that day will make you look at the world differently forever.
I still remember the first time I noticeably experienced (a pretty tame level of) racism and it totally changed my whole outlook on life. I was a pretty sheltered 16 year old and more naive than most at that age tbh. But that was one of those pinpoint moments in my life where I felt I really grew up after that.
It wasn’t even that deep. I’d gone to a town where not a lot of POC were and we went shopping and I noticed that a lot of people were staring at me and my family. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why, I didn’t even notice it was all white people looking at me because I genuinely just don’t see race when I look at someone. But then my brother told us they were looking at us because we weren’t white. And it just made so much sense and it was suddenly so obvious to me. It left me feeling so stupid and naive afterwards, like I’ve obviously always known I was a minority but fortunately, I’d never felt I was different for it until then.
It really hit me deep, right in the core - I’d never felt like that before. And that was just from being stared at. It wasn’t like they called us a slur or even said anything to us. But it totally changed my view on any weird interaction from there on afterwards, this little paranoid voice in the back of mind was conscious of the fact that this attribute could very easily be a reason why someone is being unnecessarily weird with me. I absolutely hate it but what I hate more is the fact that there can be genuine substance behind it. That the voice could very well be true. All for something as simple as the colour of my skin. It’s messed up.

I wish all we had to worry about is not having a our name called out, but dang all us whyte folks have to deal with is being stabbed.

This is obviously a fake set up, they intentionally didn't call her out just so they can cry about it because there is nothing else really to cry about. I just feel sorry for the girl for being made part of their dirty act.

The fact that it took 18 MONTHS for Gymnastics Ireland to make an apology is just as appalling. They can keep the apology because the damage has been done. Kudos to Simone for reaching out, and to the rest of the world for showing incredible support for the sweet child.

@SonderDAzeX there was ample time for them to explain their intent, but instead, they reluctantly provided an apology. This was no accident. There is no other explanation as to why the only participant excluded was also the only Black participant.
This will be a part of her core memories; it was so obviously done in bad taste.
Luckily, her idol sent a message and hopefully it helps her to keep strong on her way to the Olympics.

The way that little girl was looking around while being skipped over while other kids get their medal is heartbreaking I’ve been that child before
it didn't even mean to but watching her get skipped over, my mind went straight to an experience i had as a child being told i was "one of the good [mexicans]" by a white childhood friend's relative. didn't quite understand what she meant but it made me feel uneasy. that memory will stick with her forever, but that woman's discrimination will never be forgotten either since it's on camera. i just hope it serves as motivation to continue on despite the evil in the world and doesn't get her too down. she's got a lot of people rooting for her.

We've all done things we're sorry for. Everyone makes mistakes. There's nothing wrong with making a mistake and apologizing for it. Having said that an apology for something you did ON PURPOSE is usually insincere. This instance for example is definitely insincere.
I wouldn't have left without my Child's medal.
In fact while she was passing them out and skipped my Child, I would have been saying:
Excuse me, you missed a Child.

After the clip ended, I believe the girl received her winners medal as she won the competition, and the other girls were receiving participation medals (loser medals). Maybe solution is to get rid of participation medals?

In this short video clip, only the red-ribbon medals are given, which is merely for participation.

The narration is framing this incident in a particular way, and you have taken the bait. There is a lot we don't know about this incident. The lady handing out the medals looks distracted, as if she lost track of which kid was next in line. Were the medals inscribed with a particular kid's name, and there was no medal for the kid who was skipped? Yes, racism is everywhere, but not every mistake or rudeness is motivated by racism.

The other kids noticed, so I’m sure the other adults did, too. Not one of them stood up for this child, so it’s not just the one woman. Everyone who should have stepped in but didn’t is just as complicit. Knowing that this is just one of the many racist experiences this gymnast will have in her life makes me so angry. This White woman was also the judge who scored the Black girl so highly that she was given a white-ribbon medal later in the ceremony.
