What I see in this DIY video is not a good pedalboard, I see an amazing wife who is lacking the right tools and still gets things done. You are one lucky man. Cherish this woman.
A good tip when sawing wood by hand is to mark the line you're cutting by with a knife. This severs the grain fibers and gives a path of least resistance for the saw to follow. Much easier and more accurate than the eyeball method.
Additionally, when gluing wood together, it's best to glue surfaces that do not have an sort of coating on them. Otherwise the glue doesn't provide any structural rigidity. Glue needs a rough surface to adhere properly.
this video rocks, i'm about to make one for my boyfriend for his b day. Also- people, get over it! His wife built it, so what? she likes projects and if she can do a better job at it than he can then why the hell not?! It's pretty great how they were able to work together on this because she probably needed his help (with instructions) just as much as he needed help building it sheesh
***** "great project to do as a couple"... except you didn't really do anything, she did it all.
The problem isn't with her doing it so much as the guy not being man enough to be anymore than a personal purse carrier.

I guess You didn't watch the whole video, right ;)
mine turned out very nice
+JJ Tanis you couldn't risk damaging your fingers, who would play the lovely background music! 😉
Years later and I'm still coming back and watching this vid. It's like calming and meditative on top of a good tutorial.
Thank you for this very helpful tutorial. My son wants a pedal board and my eyes rolled when he showed me the price ! Off to Ikea and now a happy teenager and dad with his pocket intact. Hats off to your wife, the noble lady who did the sawing, drilling, etc, very impressive and puts me to shame. Thank you again from London, UK
Yay wife that builds pedalboards! Sweet!
Imagine if IKEA just made a pedalboard.
blackknightkanos you'd still have to make it yourself
@@colin1891 without screws and manual
So ended up acquiring wife as instructed in the video, but oddly instead of building me a pedal board she got pregnant and made me build a crib. Any ideas? Is mine malfunctioning?
zaqintosh best comment ever! Hahahaha!!!
zaqintosh Roflol!!!!!!
I had the same problem with a woodsplitter i got, it was a 65" model, looked really good and stacked the firewood as well. It was also cheap to run and worked great for the first couple of years, but it got clogged up from the stuff I was filling it with and the obstetrician had to take it apart to get the obstruction out. Twice!
I'm still splitting my own wood nine years later...
@@thatellipsisguy8984 You gotta wait I'd say another couple of years, and then take the obstruction out one Saturday morning and teach it to chop wood while you sit on a stump and drink beer. Be encouraging and proud when it succeeds. Don't give it too hard of a time when it fails, just show it what it did wrong and tell it try again.
thanks! as a 15 year old who doesnt have money to spend on a pedaltrain (because i spent it all on a peavey 6534) this is very useful, i told the rhythm guitarist in my band to build one and he is building it now... its very sturdy and of course since it is wood it is very easy to mod, thanks!
exactly, with wood you can try many things, and even build another one if the first isn't good.
How to build a pedal board:
Step 1: Tell your girlfriend to do it.
I honestly can not believe you are making you wife do all the work while you hold the camera, it's almost as frustrating as that jazz/blues guitar in the back ground. What a man.
I do like the guitar around 13.00 minutes.
***** That may be the case but at least buy her a jigsaw. No one likes having to saw through lengths of wood.
2022 and just seen this video. Got to hand it to your wife for being innovated using hand tools and improvising measurements! I am 60 years old and I did all my wood working with just hand tools. Until just a few years ago did I get some power tools. Why did I not do this sooner? Circular saw, reciprocating saw, got to have to save your back and time! Hand router and orbital sander also. Along with a good square and straight edge. Table saw would be nice but not everyone has room for one. These power tools are needed if you want to save your back, and wrist. I just want to point out, a good hand saw comes in handy for the small jobs. Oh and one other tip, when spray painting or any painting, use gloves!
This is not DIY, is LYWDI: Let Your Wife Do It...
Great board!
Roberto Vargas respect women
I wonder how much she would charge to build me one?
Tip: In some countries IKEA Gorm is called IKEA Hejne :)
+whyshouldidothatnow Its actually something different. The GORM is discontinued and the Hejne is similar to it. Thanks for the advice though, I bought one on your recommendation
+Klaas H I bought Hejne too, but haven't got time to check it yet. I suppose you are right. I'm glad that Hejne is similar anyway.
whyshouldidothatnow THANK YOU SO MUCH IVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND OUT WHY I COULDN'T FIND IT! Thank you!!!☺️
You are a champion! I bought a Hejne the other week thanks to your clarification and now I've just about finished the board it. Setup is actually easier than what he did in this video and it looks killer!!!
Love how you got the wife to basically build it all haha, well played their mate ;)
*there
Great work JJ's wife! I was really impressed you ripped that board (lengthwise) using a hand saw. JJ maybe get her a circular or jig saw, she earned it.
Seriously, she did a REALLY nice job!! Well done!!
Thanks for posting this JJ. Great tutorial and Great cost effective alternative to the pedal train type ready made pedal boards.
This was really cool JJ. I'm gonna give this a shot for sure.
It's just so nice to see your wife helping you with such hobby. Nice board!
It's amazing! You and you're wife together building and shooting for your pedalboard! You're a lucky guy!!!
Maaan, this is super cool, it's so simple and awesome at the same time. I wish I did something like this one day. A++ for your project!
This was incredibly helpful and my wife is happy that IKEA Gorm shelves are now my pedal board too :)
Wow, that's sweet to see your wife doing/helping... thumbs up!
Thanks! I was exactly looking for something like this, you made my day!
Great video man, really enjoyed watching it!
Be advised that this project has recently (last 2 months) become somewhat more difficult. IKEA Hejne shelves (the replacement for the discontinued Gorm shelves) - have been re-spec'ed to use a heavier-gauge nail. This makes disassembly of the shelves nearly impossible without damaging them. Your best hope is to use a rubber mallet instead of a claw hammer - but this requires the delivery of quite a lot of force.
One of the best CZcams videos in general that I have ever seen!!! Also great idea to the original creator!
I already own a pedalboard, but I'd never had thought about using a shelf!
I made a small and large pedalboard from this video about 7 years ago. They still are in use. Thanks for the idea!!
That's so cool! 💛
Just finished making one ... Awesome video! Thanks a lot :) P.S for anyone who's thinking of making one, The shelf is now called Hejne instead of Gorm.
One of the best and most useful videos ive seen in youtube. thanks

Great video, you can tell when someone really took their time and did some good editing
great vid....one of the best diy's I've seen.
Great tutorial, might do something similar with an old Ikea shelf I got laying in the shed. Thanks for the inspiration!!
Just want to say thanks for this video. Used it pretty much all the way to make mine last week. After experiencing how fun and rewarding making my own was, I'm convinced I will never buy anything professionally made. Save well over $100 dollars making mine in what felt like under 2 hours of actual work. There are plenty of videos using the same IKEA HEJNE shelves you used, but I love the detail in this one. Thanks again for saving potentially hundreds of dollars for me in the future! Rock On!
This is a very interesting and helpful video!
Thank you so much for posting. I made a GORM pedal board that can now hold 16 of my guyatone micro series pedals. I used the enitre length of the board and I put a support beam underneath in the middle of the board
great tutorial! nice pedal board for a fraction of the cost, i can't wait to try it myself
It might also be worth mentioning that IKEA also calls this a "HEJNE". That helped with my confusion upon picking it up. Thanks again for all the helpful instruction!
I actually just did this. You are correct. But I believe they actually changed the name. Not just calling it.
Great video. I will be making one this weekend.
This video was so cool! Loved the fact that your wife collaborated!
Used this video as inspiration for making my own board. Ended up working quite a bit different to this vid but this is great :)
The comments about the wife are the best thing about this video... Kudos to her!!!
Hey! Thanks for the video! I plan on building one of these this summer!! Good looking pedal board and good looking wife. Good for you on both of those. I hope she got her nails done and shoes for helping. I will be using your video as a reference when I do make mine. Have a great one!
Wow, that's a nice table saw and sander. need to get one of those.
Thanks JJ, you saved me a ton of cash. My girlfriend and I put one together in an afternoon. It works great! I wnat to say with all the materials it cost roughly $50.00, most of the cost was velcro and Walmart was out so paid $30.00. I have enogh matrrials left over to make a small board so 2 for one is awsome! Thanks again, we enjoyed your video it was very helpful!!!
It came out great, my hat's off to your wife! I'll hopefully be building my own pedal board soon and it will be a similar low budget project. I'm glad to see other people have done similar things - not every board needs to look like a space ship that costs the price of a used car :-p
Good work! Great project idea!!
Thank you!!!
Nice work and great playing
Well done! Great board ;)
Don't listen to the trolls. I thought it was great that your wife helped you out. She's cute and seemed very enthusiastic. Good idea and good video. If you don't want to buy the shelves you could do the same thing with some pieces of 1x4 and 1x2 strips or pieces of 1" molding. Those are US measurements, but I'm sure there is an equivalent size across the pond. I built a coffin-shaped pedal board a few years ago. Looks great, but is totally impractical, so I'm going to use this idea with some scrap lumber I have around the house. Thanks.
Good music, free stuff, DIY and good music... C'est parfait !
GENIUS! I am so doing this for a practice board!
Great tutorial. will make one for a very good friend!
This is awesome! Just the thing I needed
Great.. amazing diy ikea pedalboard !
This is a really great build idea. Thinking about doing it myself.
I thought the bit about different colored zip-ties was pretty funny.
i can't thank you enough this is such a great help dude!
Great tutorial. I'm going to try this out.
Good work you Two :) I like your style; "Time for Coffee!"
Great tutorial mate!
I think this is a great idea! Thanks!
Great idea. Great tutorial. Thank you so much.
I’m so happy for your pedalboard and for your wife who do everything what you want))
Great tutorial. Well done. I rather enjoyed that :) Cheers!
Nice video! I'll try to make my own pedalboard with all yours advice! ;)
You guys did a terrific job and explained it really well ..especially great for someone like myself ,who is not as skillful with the tools as your lovely Wife is..But still l've decided to give this a go and will follow your instructions..You did make it look pretty easy to do, so l will see how l go..l do live in Australia & in the NSW Country ..which is a very beautifu peacefull quite place to live, but it is a little out of the way also & when you need a special type of shop like an lkea, you do have a bit of a car trip ahead of you..We do drive to Dubbo, which is the closest big town near us every 5 or 6 weeks to do our big food shop & Dubbo is about a 3 hour drive away for us..& it does have an lkea store.. So l will definitely be going to lkea next time we are in town to get my gorm create & parts etc & start this little job..Which will finely tidy things up with my pedals & Wah ..& this will please my Wife and save us some dow & her from the pain of kicking her toe on my cry baby..So that will make everyone a lot happier ..thanks for putting this up guys and going to this trouble as it has helped us out greatly for one. regards Brett
Very nice video dude.. inspiration 👍
Thx for the tuto... very helpful!
te gek! (y) bedankt voor het posten!
Your wife rocks. Nice video. Thanks for sharing.. It turned out really nice.
Super. Nice videos, nice guitar playing, nice women (and can saw planks !), nice backyard... Happy man!
Keep going.
(I think she help you because she couldn't stand all that mess with the pedals, wire, leads, wallwarts everywhere ... and the dust clogged on it)
Great project, thanks! Just a tip, if your wife is going to build things like this for you, maybe you could run out and get her some of the right tools for the job. Watching you guys rip that board with a handsaw was painful, followed by turning a bolt with an adjustable wrench...
great job! very very cool.
Wonderful!!! Good idea!!!
Interesting. I like my holey board. You attach pedals via zip tie, it's awesome.
Very nice tutorial!
DIY = Do It YourWife
your wife is like mine always helping ..great pedalboard
Great tutorial, even greater wife.
I need both.
You need a shower, deodorant, and cologne first.
austinfailz lol
very good job, man!
참고가 잘 되네요. 나중에 한번 해봐야겠습니다. thank you.
Very good e very useful! Thank you!
Dude, you have a great wife, a cool pedal board, and apparently a great music collection! (Best part of the video was the tunes!)
I like your pedals.
Very helpful thanks JJ
Nice job! Your wife is quite the CraftsWoman!
Yesterday in Zlín (Czech city) I bought a wooden board 60x30x1,8 cm, rubber pads, brackets, Velcro, a couple of screws and bolts. It cost me about 450 CZK = about 17 Euro. All in OBI market. :) Now I have a solid basis for the board, which I'll even trick out my own drawings on wood. I am thinking about simple psychedelic artwork. I will place Velcro only under the effects. For cables can I drill a hole. Fuck overpriced pedalboards. This is a really fun and creative work. Indeed, as the music itself. Awesome video! :)
LOL I love how the wife does all the work! hehe
That's how we do that in Holland! ;-)
he has the same voice as Tyrion from GoT ! good video
Looks awesome 😀
great work!
HeY! Great job! And cool soundtrack!
I like it. Cheap, easy and 100% functional. The cherry on the cake would be if Ikea had something adaptable for a carry case or bag.
European guys rock! Who else could get a girl to go all lumberjack and stuff on their hubby's guitar gear; barefoot too!!
JJ, nice tutorial. Good job to you both. I was gonna be lazy and buy a new pedaltrain but nope, I'm making my new one, barefoot btw ;)
Oh Man...she is gorgeous!..........................Uhm...I meant the Pedal Board...;)
Lucky bastard! Great Tutorial :3
Made three - each one a different size. Thanks!!!
Great job!!!!
