Stink bug nymphs on Narrowleaf Milkweed

  • Not sure of the ID on this bug. A guess is Thyanta pallidovirens, which is known in my county. Here we see empty eggs, early instars, and two individuals molting. No animals were harmed - they were returned to their garden home soon after videotaping.

    Adult stink bugs have a very nasty trick up their tail end. I found out the painful way when I was looking at a plant, not noticing the bug. Next thing I felt a searing pain in my eye, and could smell the telltale stench. If they feel threatened they squirt this substance at you and actually aim for the eyes. Thankfully, looking at these babys on screen is safe and beautiful.
