    That image of Reed, sitting all alone on the burning SoCal sand, empty and broken as Myers flies away with Son Mi's cold remains... knowing that, despite everything she did, all the people she betrayed, he still feels he failed her in the end.
    Reed, a man torn between two impossible loyalties: his corrupt government and country, and his team. At his precise moment, the man has reached rock bottom, and yet here lies the seed of his newfound freedom. It will have taken Son Mi's death for him to realize he would no longer be a pawn in someone else's game. All it took, in fact, was a tragedy.
    What a game... What a story...

    *SPOILERS*
    -
    Between Reed and So Mi, I cannot choose. I agonised over this for days after picking one ending, then reloading the save and playing the other.
    Reed is loyalty and responsibility. Sometimes for good, sometimes for bad. He forgives So Mi for betraying him, because to him it makes perfect sense. He forgives Myers for giving the order, because he entered this life knowing one day his sacrifice could be what is required to save others. The NUSA, for all its flaws, is at least a government less dysfunctional than that of the 'free cities'. Corps face some regulation, there are powerful forces to defend against the sort of threats that Night City allows to run rampant. Myers is who the NUSA needs to keep it together - a ruthless and capable warrior in a world filled to the brim with almost unimaginable threats. His loyalty makes sense. But it also makes him listen to Myers' demands that So Mi be returned. He doesn't trust the headstrong and foolish young woman he recruited to make the right decisions, and he is convinced only he knows how to 'save' her - even worse, that it is his responsibility to do so. He cannot allow her free choice, so he gives V the icepick. She's too dangerous. She's too volatile. She's balancing on the edge of a fatal collapse that could kill hundreds, ignite another war, release rogue AIs or all of the above. She needs to be neutralised (in the literal sense of the word, not as in killed), then dealt with somewhere safe. Weighing up all the evidence, it's the right decision. But so, so wrong. He's too loyal, too principled, too logical. He ruins everything, and loses either everything he loves, his life or himself.
    So Mi is independent, free and flexible. Sometimes for good, sometimes for bad. She uses V even more egregiously than Reed, but arguably for perfectly understandable reasons. Over and over again her free will to change her situation gets her into deeper and deeper trouble, first by aggravating the Corps (to be saved from consequences by Reed), then by trying to play Hansen (to be saved from the consequences by V), then by trying to play V and Reed (either avoiding or being forced to face the consequences depending on what V decides). She has no obvious morals or codes of honour beyond self interest. On the other hand, she at least has the decency to feel bad about her betrayals, whereas Reed's decisions are always backed by that cold logic and self assurance. Calculating that his actions are just because the ends justify the means. Every step of her life she has pushed to find a way out of the cage of her existence, and time and again this gets her into trouble. Can we blame her though? Isn't that exactly what V has been doing? Isn't that exactly what we would do? Faced with restrictions and control, and a whole host of mistakes we can't undo, wouldn't we run and lie and fight to escape - to win ourselves a future of our own choosing? So Mi knows she can't trust Reed to understand. He's too cold, too mechanical, too wedded to his principles and firm belief that in the end her life is in his hands, not her own. So she runs from him, fights and destroys and betrays and kills to claw a questionable future from the ashes of her life. She needs to get away, damn the consequences. In her mind, there's nobody out there who understands her and respects her autonomy. Except maybe V, if she's lucky. Weighing up all the evidence, it's the right decision. But so, so wrong. She's too self-centred, too willing to gamble, too happy to damn everyone and everything if it stands against her. She ruins everything, and loses everything she loves, her life or herself.
    Whatever V chooses, the outcome is bleak. Songbird's liberty on the moon might be as much a phantom as what she had with the FIA. Her death might be the best choice for her, but what sort of a choice is that? Myers is a hard-assed bastard, but what choice does she have? Reed wants the best for everyone, but is too blind to see that maybe what he considers the best isn't the same as everyone else. Does So Mi's betrayal of V justify a return betrayal? There is no obvious choice, unless one has very strong opinions on one side of this debate or the other that I do not share.
    After my few days of internal turmoil, I remembered something that Alex said before the mission to extract Songbird. The exact wording escapes me, but it was along the lines of 'don't overthink things, go with your gut'.
    I chose to send So Mi to the moon because Reed was the one who tried to force my hand, to make me do something that I wasn't comfortable doing, that I didn't consider a good idea. Incapacitating Songbird is a far more egregious betrayal than refusing to do so. Reed didn't offer me a choice, just the same as Songbird.
    It's a flimsy line at best, though. So I left PL feeling drained. I had no conviction I had done the right thing. I raised that glass to Reed alongside Alex with genuine emotion. I said 'to principles' with feeling. I didn't hate anyone I worked with over the course of the DLC, not even Myers. I hope I did the right thing. I hope this was the best way.
    But as ever with this game, I'll never really be sure. All I can know is that this was my way. I followed my principles as best I could, and I'm thankful that I was given the freedom to choose.
    TL;DR A full year or two after I last made one of these posts, the stupid pixels made me feel dead inside. Yey.

      Reed is one of the most complex characters that I have ever seen in a video game. He is a snake that bites its own tail until forever. Johnny explains this perfectly.
      He says V "Think finally I understand why I couldn't bring myself to trust Reed".
      He then proceeds.
      "Cause I know his type. Idealist, like me, who can't see that what he believes in will devour anyone he cares about".
      Then, If you killed Songbird Johnny says this. "Only thing sets us apart is his faith in the system, in its principles. Except the line between believing in an ideal and being plain naive is pretty fucking thin".
      I was leaning towards Reed in my first playthrough but then I realized Reed was too far gone. His intentions are good but he can't understand the fact that if he keeps clinging to his ideals, those ideals will give Songbird a life worse than death. Songbird is like an adopted daughter to Reed. I feel for him. I really do. He wants to do the right thing for her because he feels responsible. If He had shown any sign of change for the better (putting aside his ideals to really help the person he sees almost as a daughter) I wouldn't have hesitated one second to side with him. Reed wants to have his cake and eat it too. I understand this. I want a happy ending too. But the moment we give Myers her personal weapon, she won't hesitate to use Songbird over and over again. Reed clearly knows this but he still insists. This is why I will never side with him.
      Reed is naive not because he can't understand how things work. He understands everything more than anyone. He is naive because he can't understand the fact that sometimes clinging to your ideals and blindly following them no matter what the outcome is what brings his doom. Both for himself and for people he cares about.

      @@Pro88teC I did the opposite. *SPOILERS* The moment after she said the neural matrix was a single use thing and only decided to mention this till just as I was about to put her on the spaceship, I gave her up to without hesitation and felt no regrets. I did so because she was just trying to assuage her guilt and I'm thinking we are way past that looking back on the wreckage of dogtown to the spaceport and everything in-between. She knew and still strung me along in the hopes I wouldn't give her up even though I'd said from the beginning I'm only working for the FIA for a possible cure, the one SHE has supposedly has (I'll admit I play as a cold hearted corpo). I saw it as her finally getting her comeuppance. Sure I've killed to get where I am but I can 99% say for sure they had it coming and my bodycount for innocents is only in the double digits compared to her hundreds or potentially even more.

    I literally just finished all the other endings of Phantom Liberty (finished the first time two days ago with So Mi Moon ending). All these other endings were bitter to say the least. They all left me feeling empty and sick to the stomach, even the new main story ending. I loved Reeds character a lot. However, his biggest flaw was that he was fixated on following the corrupt government and keeping So Mi "alive" when in reality neither of these two things would help him or anyone he loved at all. That is why at the end of the day, I choose the So Mi moon ending. It felt like the only right way imo. I did enjoy playing through betray songbird ending though contentwise. It was SO WELL WRITTEN. Loyalty is really the whole theme of this dlc. Who do you stand for?
    And what will you do to get what you want? Are you loyal to your principal, or are they just as flimsy as your life.
    You went in a situation with no real clue how it would change you
    you came in looking for liberty but you came out as a phantom of yourself.
    So I'll ask this one question we were ask at the start
    "Blaze of glory or Quiet life? V
    What do you choose."

    • @maganaluis92
      @maganaluis92 Před 6 měsíci +3

      I think the theme was freedom, nothing screams harder for this theme than the show in the black saphire with the artist's light show using wings, then breaking free from the spyder web, and of course songbird using a feathery dress. Reeds on the other hand is a slave to its moral and values, yet he is a good person, and plays a fatherly figure for Songbird always wanting the best for her and trying to control all the variables... The trajedy here is not Songbird, it's Reeds, at least on the ending we see ^^^

    • @Dabst3rPlays
      @Dabst3rPlays Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@maganaluis92I agree with this! I think the biggest theme was freedom. The expansion revolved around Songbird trying to find freedom and Reed trying to control her because he thinks he is helping her. V comes in and in the end of the day he has to decide whether he wants to help So Mi find true freedom from the corrupt government or help Reed lock her up to “help” her. That’s just my view on it though. I can see both So Mi’s and Reed’s side. Loyalty was another good theme though yeah

    Honestly I never knew you could have a discusssion and drawn out death scene with Reed. I put So Mi down then shot Reed three times in the chest and he fell. Reed was so pathetic but its what makes him compelling. Just not compelling enough to convince me his or the NUSA's mission mattered.

    It's possible that you've already been asked... But the music in the cinematic trailer, when Solomon fights on the train... Does the track exist somewhere? Some say it's outsiders no more, but that's panam's theme as far as I know. I would like someone to find the track from the trailer.
