  • Piano Concerto in E flat major, WoO 4, is one of his earlier works, written in 1784 when he was 13. Only the piano part survives today, although there are some indications in the manuscript for orchestral cues. On the occasions when the work has been performed, the orchestral part has had to be arranged beforehand. The concerto is sometimes referred to as Piano Concerto No. 0, as it came before all of Beethoven's other piano concertos. It is rarely performed.

This movement is ideal for introducing very young listener to classical music.See what other kid about the same age can do.
The most extraordinary thing is that this concerto was written before Mozart wrote his major piano concertos from number 11 onward.

C'est bien de nous faire profiter de ces enregistrements ; mieux encore serait de citer l'orchestre qui les joue et le chef...

    13. That was his age when he wrote this. 13 freakin' years old. No offence, but nothing Mozart wrote by that age touches this.

True, but don't forget that Beethoven had Mozart's genius to build on.

You don't build on someone else's genius when it comes to creativity. You rely on your own. Beethoven had models in previous composers, as did Mozart. So they are equally "even" on that front.

Good. Now you can start "building on mine" in your next replies. XD

Disagree. The opening theme with its alberti base and restated melody is about as trite and formulaic as you could get. His motivic ideas are all over the map and the piece has no cohesion. It's just what you would expect from a burgeoning genius at 13 years old. Mozart by 13, was composing music with greater wit, cohesion and structure, so was Mendelssohn (brother and sister at 13), Clara Schumann (who also composed a piano concerto at 13).... to name a few. Schubert at 13 was also composing tighter compositions. And that's the interesting thing about Beethoven. You get the sense with other great composers that they were born with a "set style". They brought their era's music to ever greater perfection. Beethoven started out as a hack neo-classical composer and never stopped developing and changing. That kind of genius is off the scale. He went off into his own world in a way no other composer did, before or since.

For sure the very young Beethoven can do a lot lot better than his rough cruel and alcholic father by this work alone. He doesn't need to strike a big fat c minor chord on the piano to attract attention !
