    This video breaks down average costs of a ferret, the upfront costs of the supplies you need, as well as the prices of ongoing costs like food and veterinary care.

      The Ferret Nation and Critter Nation cages are so wonderful! (Just be careful with the Critter Nations, as they are much easier for ferrets to climb the outside.)

    Paid 250 each for mine at the store. Medical shots probably ran 150 each. Food is 25 a bag and last 2-3 weeks. Poop pads run about 30 dollars a month. Baby wipes run about 20 a month. They are due on shots once a year about 100 each.

    My Snow gets two implants a year. He’s 8 and he’s the best ferret I’ve ever owned. I pay $325 each time. My other ferret Daisy just had a tumor removed and her teeth cleaned. That bill came close to the implant bill. I love my vet she’s freaking awesome. I live in Pa. The babies are now just starting up. So those two will be getting their distemper shot. The cost of ferrets at petco is $379.99. I like it because it keeps people from dropping fast cash on an animal that needs a lot of care and attention. It makes them think a little l longer. I love this video. Keep doing these.

      @PawsToJourney  Před 2 lety

      Thank you for the comment and kind words! It can definitely be such a shocker to people when it comes to how much their vet care can be; meaning a lot of them are left without proper treatments. While we love showing the fun side of owning ferrets, we want to be upfront and honest about how costly they really are!
      Their prices sure have gone up! When we first got our first ferret back in 2015, we only paid $150.00 at Petco. We were talking to a Petco Manager the other day, and they said one of the reasons the prices have gone up so high is due to the shorter there was during Covid.

    My Lily was not planned. I was keeping her for a week, but, 15 months later, she’s still here. I have a Florida room, she and I, and my dog, live here. Ferret proofing was a learning curve. If she thinks she can, she will. If she ever does, she will remember, and do it again. She will not eat meat. High protein kitten chow is all she will eat. She does love pork rind for a treat. I take her outside every morning, in a fenced yard. A ferret will quickly show you where you have a two inch opening. Lily responds to a squeaky toy, ( learning curve), so, when she escapes me, I can use it to call her back to me. We have 5 dogs total, and 3 cats. 4 dogs accept her, but won’t play with her, the 5th dog wants to eat her. The cats are all hunters, but, surprisingly show no interest in her. *sigh* it’s a juggling act. I love Lily. It’s fun to have a little critter smarter, faster, and with more imagination than most people. And she LOVES the garden hose! Combination otter and pit bull!

    My ferrets free roam 24/7 but I still have a $400 cage just incase they ever need a safe space to hang out while stuff is going on. Like washing floors or going in and out of the room where the door needs to stay open for a bit.

      That's definitely great! We use our cage if both me and my husband are away, or when we're sleeping. They would probably be okay, but I'm an over-worrier LOL. Otherwise, they free roam from around 7am to 10pm at night.

    Ferrets are for hunting. They are carnivores and in the UK you can buy them for about£10.00 each from a breeder. Don’t feed the dry food it’s not their preferred food.

    • @PawsToJourney
      @PawsToJourney  Před 3 lety +2

      How exciting! I’m so glad you have found our videos useful! We had to do so much research ourselves over the years to gather all the knowledge. As for blockages, signs could include lethargy (they seem tired/weak), vomiting, not eating, not going to the bathroom, weight loss, or a change in poop like diarrhea or color. I always recommend having a scale on hand, and weighing your ferrets (also good for parrots) daily to monitor weight. Sometimes, weight loss is the first sign of many issues, which you may be able to catch quicker.

    Hey, nice video. Your ferrets are very cute, I've been looking into getting ferrets recently and I was wondering how much money do you think is an appropriate amount to set aside for emergencies?

    • @PawsToJourney
      @PawsToJourney  Před 2 lety

      Hi! Thanks so much! Usually it's recommended to have $1,000 to $1,500 saved per ferret for emergencies. This could still not be enough if the emergency is severe enough; but should cover most emergencies. What can be difficult for owners is when there is back to back emergencies with multiple pets, and the emergency funds run out, and you don't have time to resave; so more is always better, if possible.

    The dishes that connect to cage is probably best for ferrets, but for my pet rats, they got water bottle and water and food bowls. I just use those little bowls I had that is for little dips or whatever from the dishes section at walmart or wherever. They are usually sold with 4 in a box. There is probably cheaper nicer and cuter than buying pretty much The same thing is just made as pets' dishes. Also the thrift store would be cheap for stuffed animals.

    I don’t know if I’ll be getting any answers to this question anytime soon but I figured I’d leave this here anyway.
    In regards to enclosures, I have a spare room that Id like to divide with a baby gate I can install (one that can’t be climbed or wiggled through). Then fill that half of the room with tubing, low-set cat trees, hammocks, a litter box, etc. Essentially just “ferret proofing” that area so I don’t have to cage my ferrets. If done properly, would this be a good idea? I’ve had a lot of people say you have to cage them, and others say that they leave their ferrets free roam all the time and it’s better for their quality of life.

    • @PawsToJourney
      @PawsToJourney  Před 2 lety

      I've seen both sides of this argument.
      While the risk of an accident can increase with increasing the amount of space they have to free roam; it doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't. If done properly, I think it can be a great idea. Just make sure you're also spending time with them: sometimes being in a separate room can make it where they get less human interaction.
      If you are still planning play times with them, and are diligent about making sure everything is safe, and escape-proof, I think it's a great idea!

      We use Orijen Cat and Kitten, Wysong Digestive Support for Ferrets, and Instinct Ultimate Protein. There is a lot of debate on kibbles, and can be quite confusing. I know some people are shying away from Instinct Ultimate Protein, because they’ve recently changed their ingredients. Peas are now higher on the ingredients list, meaning there are more of them in there. Peas have been linked to kidney/bladder stones in ferrets. We do less of the Instinct food because of this, but do still feed it.

      Ferrets have a "Musk" scent. I personally don't think it stinks, but it probably goes from a 4 to a 6 depending on many factors. The part that stinks the most is the poop/potty. That usually is around a 8 on a stink scale and can be worse if there's a lot or depending on their diet. If you keep everything clean, scoop out their litter often, and don't bathe them too much then the smell won't be a big issue in my experience.

Our affiliate link for the Ferret Nation single: amzn.to/3GLtTws Not sure what else to recommend as many of the cages I've seen people get from Petco/Petsmart, have flimsy bars, and have seen ferrets squeeze through them and escape. A raw diet is one of the best diets for a ferret, but understandably, not everyone wants/can go down that route. If that is the route you’re wanting, I would suggest looking for the Holistic Ferret group on Facebook or for their website.
      Otherwise, some good options are Orijen Cat and Kitten, Wysong Digestive Support for Ferrets, and Instinct Ultimate Protein Chicken or duck flavor for cats. It’s recommended to mix at least two different types of foods.
