  • Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 David Grissom Licks From 2013. For those unaware of David Grissom and his fiery blues-rock music and fretboard excursions, this lesson will give you some new licks to tackle and a very talented player to check out - so dive right in!
David's worked with a lot of artists ranging from Bob Dylan, Joe Ely, Storyville, John Mellencamp, and many more, not to mention cutting a number of solo releases, which always feature a few instrumental cuts to satisfy his growing fanbase of guitarists and music fans alike.
This lesson features some slick licks pulled from a live performance in Austin, TX from 2013, and features David tearing through a set of his music along with a number of covers near the end. He also played Storyville's hit 'Good Day For The Blues' while he and his band were tight and outta-sight through the entire show. Great tones, good music, and plenty of blues-rock fretboard magic to sink your teeth into, so be sure to look around for that show online.
The ideas in this lesson include some challenging string-bending phrases, plenty of hybrid-picking, a jazzy lick that blends two different arpeggios, and much more. All of these ideas feature plenty of David's feel and melodic blues-rock phrasing, which has helped him stand out from the pack, while also evoking traces of legends such as Eric Johnson and Robben Ford (to name a few). He's a great player and you should totally check him out if you haven't heard his playing and inspired music.

Joe Ely - “Live at Liberty Lunch” captures David at a really great/energetic time in his career. While the albums out of print now. It is on CZcams. Well worth a listen. Certainly one of the best live albums of all time. Fantastic!

i saw david grissom on austin city limits w/ Joe Ely just around the time of the gulf war, and David blew me away. I was goin on an on about his sound, and his sweet guitars to my buddies. Then, like a year or so later my wife says were goin to see John Mellencamp. I had just bought that album, and Dave was the guitarist on it! We then saw him live for Mellencamp and he blew me away- i swear I don't even like JM, and that concert in Jan 92 was one of the top 10 concerts I've ever seen!

Caught Grissom playing with Robben Ford a few years back. He was not listed on the bill... and I wasn't that familiar with his work. Wow seeing him live was pretty sweet. I'm a total fan now.

The first Storyville album is amazing, I bought it the day it came out. Very soulful. He also played a few songs on Robben Ford's Mystic Mile album. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of one of Dave's licks pulled from a live Joe Ely release decades ago. Great player.
EDIT: the Joe Ely lick is very similar to the bending part in lick #2.

Outstanding ! Thanks for showcasing his playing . I’ve been a big fan of his since his Mellencamp days . So glad you did the bonus lick. His pedal steel type bends and hybrid picking are so unique, and he still makes it sound so ballsy,. Really like his tone as well. Another great vid , keep up the good work!

David Grissom first blew me away with Joe Ely. I still have the VHS tape I have of that Austin City Limits show from like early 91 or late 90. I remember the part where they slowed a song down , and David was playing that sweet brown PRS. Don't put a lock on my heart or something like that. I mean that whole set was good, but I was so ready for Grissom's technique- it was the shiz. Also some other channel just placed him in a video of under rated guitarists, Amen to that.

Hey Dave... nice lesson once again! David Grissom has been one of my fav players for a while. He likes the key of B and G since he can do a lot with open strings. The tail end of that 2nd lick should be played together with an open B string as a pedal note. It's one of Dave G's signature licks. He's a big fan of open strings.
