Back in the 80's we called these Jersey wells. You'd take a milk jug and put tiny holes towards the bottom so that water would slowly trickle out. Bury the jug so that just the top with the cap was showing. Unscrew the cap, fill the jug with the water hose and recap. About every three or four days give them another fill.
@@TheSwede001 Yeah, but have you seen the price of terra cotta? Sometimes, you've got to use what you have on hand, even if it isn't the option you really want to use. Something subpar is better than nothing.
@@s.s.9149I regularly check both my local craigslist and offerup for cheap or mostly free pots. I have over 50 terracotta pots and I paid for less than 10 of them. Not trying to argue with you on the price of nice pots, just throwing it out there that you can absolutely get them without paying given some time. If you're just gonna drop them into the ground they don't even need to be in the best shape.
Look up "Olla" and you can find out the different historical methods, it was used in a lot of cultures, especially ones with lack of ready access to water. Pretty fascinating. There's versions that are works of art, custom and unique faces on the sides- which then gets buried out of view, craftsmanship and beauty for its own sake. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olla
so interesting. I would have never thought & its not the eye sore that putting a plastic bottle is (2 liter bottle, gallon milk junk, ect). Thanks.....
Rather than standing on my feet holding a hose for hours a week I fill this once a week and it takes me two minutes tops - personally with my physical limitations that is preferable, but to each their own. Thanks!
My dad and I have been working on a garden together, he's obsessed with putting everything on a drip irrigation but every morning I start my day with the watering can. So now I'm just kinda standing there with nothing to water 💧
I did notice when I used these, there was some mold forming near by. So maybe letting them Get empty occasionally is ok (depending on your individual environment, of course)
It also draws water from the soil into the pot. I use funnels. I put them around and hide them under the leaves. Cost around £1 each. It takes the water down to the roots and doesn't evaporate
No it doesn't... That's just not possible due to physics... It's capillary action that will draw the water out of the Olla (the clay pot) through the porous clay. The weight of the water ("pulled down" due to gravity) aids the capillary action and "pushes" the water against the walls of the pot (The force of water "pushes" downwards and to the sides) For it to draw water into the clay, the pot would have to be empty and dry. Then the water would fill the porous clay from the outside, however, since the wet/damp soil doesn't act as water and the majority of it's force will be downwards (unless you have fully saturated soil), it won't "push" the water inwards like a full Olla would outwards. Hence, it might make the clay pot damp, but it wouldn't "steal" a lot of water from the soil. English isn't my first language and I couldn't remember all of the scientific terms. But I hope it's still understandable ☺️
Asa medium ground option i bought some water spikes which are the same idea but the reservoirs are wine bottles u have at home and they were real cheap
Thank you for the information. I am a beginner gardener, and I am trying to grow a few vegetables in a 5 box planter system. I've got some green grow coming up in 4 of the 5 planters and I am excited. Any advice for a beginner grower?
Hey, I actually just posted a q & an and I did give some advice for new gardeners there! It’s a bit too long to type out but it’s up on my channel right now.
Oh you rock thank you so much what an amazing idea well I subscribed you got me thank you for this video thank you for the knowledge thank you for the information much love to you and your Channel❤
This is good information. I would like to get the info on add the watering from the terracotta pit and also the refilling system you have for watering from captured rainwater. Thank you.
Mind if i ask what soil you use? Most soil over here sell with peat and I have never had a plant that survived in that soil. Had some succulents that needed replanting, used that soil and they all died. Yours look a bit different in those planters, so i was wondering what it was
I'm literally not even joking you I've never heard of this until like yesterday and since last night when I first saw the video of the person putting a small one in their potted plant every hour now I'm getting video like this and I'm like yes please got to get me some terracotta
Orbees in panty hose or something so the moisture can feed the plants they were made for flowrs from the jump so itll work i just learned they use em for starts to i did it it worked i had startz in 3 days i literslly put em in a cup w a lid b forgot about em
I did this last year in a big planter on my inferno of a balcony and it was the first time I could keep a plant alive from spring all the way to fall
It really does work!
Cool 😎 Good to hear that it works. Thanks for sharing
That’s awesome!
Many terracotta plant pots sitting around. I'm'n'a give this a try. Thanks for sharing 😊✌🏾💫🐛🦋🌸

Same concept but I'd stay away from buried plastic milk jugs in a vegetable garden.
not down with the plastic

I have used thick 3-5 inch sponges as the base of the bed. That works great too and stores water overtime.
Wickedly Watered 🌀📍🦘

I like this a lot but it does seem harder than just using my hose. Pretty garden!
Rather than standing on my feet holding a hose for hours a week I fill this once a week and it takes me two minutes tops - personally with my physical limitations that is preferable, but to each their own. Thanks!
This is a great idea!!!
Fabulous idea! Thank you. ❤
You are so welcome!
Hi there! I use ollas but would love it if you could send me more info on the rainwater system you’ve got going on there. Very cool, thanks!
more info linked in the description :)
Awesome tip! Thank you🙏
Awesome! Love it!
Do you have a full video on this? I'm interested in a simple & affordable Irrigation system
Yep it’s a couple vids back on my channel!
If you tap on the 3 dots on top right hand on your screen you can see the link. This goes for most video shorts.
It's not affordable though if you have to plant one every couple of ft.
I’m definitely trying this. Thank you 🙏🏻
You’re welcome 😊
Liking this watering system ! May I get the info on where you got your watering system?
Good advice. Also, looking great 👍
Definitely want the info. Great idea.
Very smart to show the simple idea and plan first before introducing the upgraded X version of the idea lol 😅
I would definitely like to do this in my garden. Thank you for this.
Info on the watering system is linked up in the description :)
Propagate in the pot bc the roots give great nutrients
I couldn’t stop watching the video. Is it the water? I’m must be thirsty 🤣🤣🤣
You are beautiful and a genius! ❤❤❤❤❤
Wow looks interesting and easy to recreate.. good stuff

This is genius.
I need to do this but in an orchard where pots would cost too much, I’m experimenting with hydrogels
My cats would love those.
Great idea!

Garden hose to soaker hose. Water turn on off inside in the a c. Very simple really.
Wastes 70% more water than this method.
Live the system
Thanks!
Didn’t know the gardener also owned a cake factory… 😂
The thing with stolen comments is that they are not funny anymore.
Please I want to implement this project in my own garden and flower beds 😊
What did you place in the bottom of the pot to cover the hole?
i think she did a way seal (just use candles)
