  • I just read the Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, which explains, KonMari- a Japanese art that takes decluttering and organizing to a whole new level.Here is a look into my personal experience with it. It was a lot of work, but well worth it! I'm in love with minimalistic living now = )

    Also, Konmari does say that doing this 'quickly' is within six months...the fact that you did it all in one go is amazing! No wonder you were tired! ;)

      Ashley Brown I began last week too. I took a whole week to do clothes because I have 4 kids and I wanted them involved. I was able to show each one the principles and methods of konmari. Each child folded and organized their drawers. It was hard for me to accept some of their discard choices. But if it didn't spark joy for them, why keep it??? Tomorrow I begin books. I'm a homeschooling mom. I got a ton of books. :O

    Another question you could ask yourself would be "would I buy it again" ? If you wouldn't purchase it if you saw it at the stop ore it might be time to go.

      We had glass from an entertainment center break, I've done clothes & books/movies, but not papers yet, that has to wait until right before momentos (honestly I'd rather do momentos...) but anyway "is this worth cleaning the glass shards off?" helped...
      Clothing I plan to give myself a month or two (into a new season of weather here) and go through again... if the those "I might wear it..." don't get worn, they are gone!

    AAAAAHHHH!!!! I love this. I went through the KonMari method about a year ago and got rid of quite a bit. I've since moved and as I started putting things away, I had minimal things but still felt like something was off. Your second question you came up with, "Do I see this item in my ideal future closet," just hit me like a brick. After this I'm going to straight go back to my clothes and ask that question, I think it will make the difference completely.

    My big hangup about discarding stuff is the question "what if I might need this someday?" I have actually thrown stuff away only to need it later, but I guess a majority of the stuff is not needed. I remember hearing one lady say if she wasn't sure she should discard something or not, she just put those things in a large container and kept it for at least a month. Then she went through it again and discarded most of those things. I think that's what I'm going to have to do too.

    • @jasonpeterson8170
      @jasonpeterson8170 Před 5 lety

      sunshinegirl1967 That’s the thing. Why does it matter? Is it a life threatening situation? The point, especially with easily replaceable items is that if you really need it, you will get another. What if someday never comes and you carted around some useless shit your whole life.

I've given myself 6 months to accomplish my goal. Books were very hard and I dread getting to the photos part but I keep on moving forward!

    I went through the KonMari process after discovering the book last fall. It took a few months to continue every category but I absolutely loved the process. I've shared bits of it online and with friends, encouraging them to do the same. Then this summer, I helped my mom go through a few categories in her house and we must have gotten rid of about 30 bags of stuff (clothes, linens, cleaning supplies, toiletries, trash, books, etc). I was there for a week and we just barely broke the surface but now, my mom is sharing her continued progress (like going from clothes in 3 closets, 10 bins throughout the house, and 2 dressers down to 1 closet with just a few sentimental pieces in the guest room and finally being able to access her bedroom closet again! Since I'm moving next month, as I pack things up, I've been ruthless in getting rid of extras, getting rid of clothes I'm not reaching for or wear and realize it's not for me. I've been steadily decluttering all year but now that we're moving, I'm using it as an excuse to really go for it! I just love watching declutter videos and I thoroughly enjoyed yours, especially with you starting off by saying you thought everything was minimal at the start! Thanks for sharing your process with us!

It's hard to get it done when they want to play with piles and mix stuff up. I'm getting there though and you have given me my second push to just do it. I'm getting that book too. I been thinking about it for so long but I'm so ready to read it and then pass it along to someone who is genuinely interested in it💜or I'll keep it until I find the right person lol.

      Don't worry about your husband. I have 3 kids and my husband wasn't on board either. I started with the kids' clothes. We have donated 15+ bags and I think when he realized how much we donated, sold and just happier I was he has since started on his clothes. I has taken me a while as well. I started in May and I am still not done, but I am tackling it just like KonMari suggest. Another suggestion, we use www.itsdeductible.com for all of our donations. I really helps out come tax time. Do get the book and read it. Good luck!

      Suha Ahmad Agreed... It's contagious! ; ) My hubby is
      starting to do his own thing now.
      As for actually doing the K-M method... I was, and remain, inspired by so many CZcamsrs who are willing to post their own successes and challenges, but imho there is no short cut for actually READING the books and understanding her underlying philosophy. Following the actual step by step process has made all the difference for me.
      Also, for me this is not really about being a 'minimalist' ...although minimalists can certainly use this approach too, it's about freeing up my life, getting rid of both physical and mental barriers.
      Orderly outer space = Orderly inner space.
      It's a journey that starts with discovering what truly brings me joy.... and giving myself permission to get rid of anything which does not.

    I also found applying aesthetics and using the same hangers created not only more organization but it is more pleasing to the eyes. I love the fact I can see what I have with the folding too. It’s a life long process....I’ll be evaluating what I’ve kept and what can go again .

    I have a 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom house and 3 kids - ages 1, 4 and 24 (hubby - ha!). I love him to pieces but he's a hoarder in denial. I've been LITERALLY working on this house for TWO YEARS. I am NOT exaggerating! I started when I was pregnant with our youngest. Watching videos like yours makes me so excited to get back on track! I've managed to send a tonnnnnnnnnnnnn of things to Goodwill but we still have a long ways to go. I've only lived here for two years so I can't speak for before I moved up here. My husband says it's part of mountain living that you hold on to anything you may need. That's why we have 5 boxes of unused blinds, 2 boxes of spare shower heads in case one of ours breaks and I KID YOU NOT, we had TWELVE potholders for pulling things out of the oven. I managed to get him down to three. The majority of the ones he had were old and wore out anyway! He doesn't want to let ANYTHING go! We also have a huge tote full of old cords that go to god only knows what. It's packed to the brim. He won't let me get rid of it. It's his raising so I can't be too mad I guess, lol. I've always been a minimalist and he's the opposite so it's been interesting to say the least! :)

      Jeb Stevenson What did you do? I have the opposite situation. This has changed my life, but my wife just won’t get on board. I have realized she is a hoarder. I found 15 dental floss, 5 bath robes, around hundreds of lip balms and makeup items, over 30 bars of soap, etc. Worst part is she refuses to read the book. Any thoughts?

    • @ShainaLeis
      @ShainaLeis  Před 8 lety

  • @skeetarus
    @skeetarus Před 7 lety +2

    I love your question "Do I see this item in my ideal future wardrobe"? when things are a maybe. I think that would help me discard things easier.
    I am only halfway through the book so I haven't started discarding yet, but I think with clothes I'm going to get caught up on practical items; like cheap but funky Kmart t-shirts that don't inspire joy necessarily, but that I wear almost every day because I have a toddler and so they end up stained and wrecked within weeks! When they are stained I don't love them anymore even if I did when I bought them, but I won't wear expensive ones around the house just to get kid snot and spaghetti sauce on it and can't keep buying new ones so that they stay clean and joyful...hrm.
    My other challenge is that 18 months after having a baby and knowing I'll probably be pregnant again within a year, I have maternity wear and clothes of various sizes as I ballooned four sizes bigger after the last pregnancy and am now almost back to my old size, but will no doubt go through this again...I don't want to hold onto things 'just in case' but I don't want to throw things out and have to rebuy it all in six months! Maybe I can apply "Does it spark joy" to a 'pregnancy' category so at least I will only have pregnancy and post-pregnancy wear that I love.

    • @ShainaLeis
      @ShainaLeis  Před 7 lety +1

      Hmmm interesting "dilemmas." I can definitely see how this might make things tricky. Just take step by step- you might be surprised as to how well "does this spark joy" works for you or the other questions I posed. It's not as "black and white" as I expected it would be, so my advice is to just do the best you can!! That's all you can do and you WILL feel much better and lighter afterwards. Let me know how you make out : )

    I got rid of all my paper! Went through all of it and binned a ton then bought a scanner and everything I need is in the cloud and not on my shelves now apart from my journals. I can't imagine having that many pants! I have 1x blue jeans, 1x black jeans, 2x leggings 1x blue pattern trousers. I'm working towards being an actual minimalist though which isn't for everyone, but I really do find having such a small amount of stuff really freeing. It is knackering going through all of it though. I used to be a maximalist. There's a theory that we get 'decision fatigue' - we're only capable of making a certain number of decisions per day, so it's worth going back through all your stuff again and doing a little every day and you'll be amazed at how much more you'll be able to get rid of when you're not forcing yourself to get through it all in one day.

    • @ShainaLeis
      @ShainaLeis  Před 7 lety +1

      Never heard of a "maximalist," interesting! I've just started to go through my clothes once again...because yes I agree. Too much in one day takes the objectivity out of it I think. Thanks for sharing and watching :)

    • @ImTash
      @ImTash Před 7 lety

      Something I've found really good to do with my own stuff is put all the hangers on the rail the wrong way round, so they hook on from the back rather than the front. That way I can see what I've used, and after a month, I'll see all the stuff that's still facing the wrong way, I'll make a point of wearing it and going through the day asking myself does it itch? do I like the way it fits? does it make me sweaty? do I hate the neckline? does it need to be washed by hand (urgh!) and figuring out why it is I don't wear it and then by the end of the day I decide if it stays or goes :)

    I think you're fantastic and I loved this video, but I just wanted to super politely say that using OCD as an adjective for anything besides the actual disorder can feel really frustrating to people like me who actually suffer from it. It just continues the cycle of misinformation towards a disorder that really disrupts my daily life. I like that mix of yours - the steps between actual comments on how the steps worked for you. Good job! But, oh girl, the clothes. Very minimal amount of clothes??? I always wonder about how much stuff other people have and ask myself, if I should downsize at all. Even if you count in my gardening clothes I have 5 trousers. Considering I am pregnant and currently have 2 extras there is still a lot of empty trash bags waiting for you, if I had my will. But, luckily, KonMari doesn't say you have to throw everything, but keep just what you love, you are probably happier than me. Because I just seem to be a picky person when it comes to clothing :-)) keep it up, never go back to the cluttered life! That is what matters in the end.

    • @ShainaLeis
      @ShainaLeis  Před 7 lety

      Hi Elisabeth- thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. I do agree that "minimal" may mean different things to different people based on what makes you happy. I'm actually on the brink of yet another clean out to reduce even more. It seems like you have a very good handle on minimalistic living on your end 😀

  • @iamelizabeth
    @iamelizabeth Před 6 lety

    So I have been minimizing for years and this method still seems so helpful! My question is...what do you do if most of your furniture and items that you might not be able to afford to replace yet don't bring you joy?

    • @ShainaLeis
      @ShainaLeis  Před 6 lety

      Hey there. I suggest you sit with each item, and sink into a place of gratitude- even if you must reach a little. For example, maybe you're not ecstatic about your couch, but you appreciate it because it provides a place to relax after a long day. Or maybe it sparks a good memory for you? Secondly, maybe you could take this furniture and refinish it. Maybe get a new slipcover for your couch or paint your table a new color.

    • @ShainaLeis
      @ShainaLeis  Před 6 lety

      Funny you ask! I just went through my closet again the other day and refolded things that I got a little sloppy with. I've always kept my jeans folded the KonMari way, but got lazy with socks and shirts! But after doing it the "right way" again, I really felt better and more organized. I'm going to try and stick with it 100% (remembering how I feel after it's done). I've decided to see folding as therapeutic moving forward :)

      I’ve donated hangers to charity and have sold clothes with hangers during a house sale. In the end, what has been purchased is being used- what’s in the closet now and what has been let go of: recycled ...and brings joy into the closet that is visually pleasing.

      Depends on where the plastic hangers went. If recycled, or to a second-hand store that needs hangers for all the used clothing they’re getting...no waste, no harm to the environment. I’d ask “where did they go?” before passing judgement.

      I love that there isn't rules to simplicity! I rotate between about 4 favorite skirts but kept about 10-12. But the children's clothes... probably still have "too many" but smaller=cuter lol again, no rules, like the minimalist said you only answer to yourself about what you keep :)

      Couldn't agree more! There's a method, but with everything in life, you gotta do what feels truest to you.

    I am literally the queen of Komono, I don't know what will I do with so many papers. I mean, I don't need them but ugh, idk why is it so hard. I store every single paper, the worse thing I do is drawing in random papers, and sinces there's one of my drawings in every paper I have I can't just throw them to the trash. I think I will scan them or probably crop them and stick them to a sketchbook, it could be fun.
    When it comes to books I'm really a mess, there´s a lot of books that I haven't read but it is because half of them are gifts. I have two shelves full of books and komono, for me it will the hardest part because I don't have a lot of clothes AND the books and komono are my mementos too.

      Hi there queen of Konomo!! Sounds like we have similar struggles. Love the scanning idea and/ or creating a pretty binder or book 😀

    So why arent we supposed to look/flip through books?

    • @ShainaLeis
      @ShainaLeis  Před 6 lety

      Because we're more apt to start convincing ourselves that we need them OR will read them in the future

      Thats what I thought also lol and alot of stuff on the shelf. I struggle with that. I cant live with the thought of just having a back pack full of stuff. I need things. I go through my closets monthly , I cant live with 3 pants ,3 shirts, etc. I have to have causal clothes,work clothes,plus with my fibro I swell up sometimes 2 sizes,I have to have those to fit,I feel guilty because I cant get down to the basic minimum I have less then the average person but I still have a lot compared to most people on these videos..Im stuck. I dont want to give up my things,it all gives me joy I cant live in a bare room. I do throw away and or donate a full trashbag of stuff a month and I rarely buy new things. So in theory I should be down to nothing but it populates and grows I guess.

      Shaina Leis I am refreshed by your positive responses to comments that are rather judgmental. KonMari says it's not a contest and it's not about having a specific number of things. It's about keeping things that spark joy and discarding what gets in the way of joy. You do you.

      I would be lying if I said there wasn't a temptation to go shopping lol. I immediately wanted to add more items that I absolutely love!! The key is to just be conscious of this thinking and control it : )

      10's Kingdom Organics I found the opposite. I actually had a problem spending, but I felt more satisfied with what I had afterwards. Also, I am MUCH more scrutinizing before buying things. I also make a list of things that I now REALLY look forward to taking time to pick out, instead of buying on a whim.

    your socks don't look quite right yet, they should be folded and put in neet rows just like the shirts and pants. I think you'll like them better that way :)
