The song that saved my sanity. I was in a depressive episode (though I didn’t really recognize it that way at the time)….. but I would cry on the way to work every day. I figured out that if I cued this song up at a certain spot on the commute, it would pump me up enough to get in the door instead of doing something stupid like not showing up or worse….. I’d take breaks and go to the RR and cry and tell myself “one more time around.” They saved my sanity, helped me keep my job, and I’m still here.
I cried to grunge a lot..no other style of music hit me with emotions like those bands..even the less known bands Tad Mudhoney Love Battery Screaming Trees...boy those songs legendary
Awesome that you found the music you needed. Never thought of it as that sort of anthem before but it fits so well now you say it!
This album was ridiculously good.
I can’t think of a mediocre song on it
"The lives we make
Never seem to ever get us anywhere but dead" so true, RIP CHRIS, You are so missed!!!
Credit to the drummer for making this groove despite the odd time. The album this is on (same one as Like Suicide) is a genuine classic - my 14 year old self was right for once! Thanks as ever for a well reasoned and fun reaction.
Cornell said the thing about time signatures in Soundgarden songs is that they never tried to make it weird, it’s just how they came out.
@@NefariousPorpoise not that they didn’t know what signatures they were in, but didn’t set out to write them consciously.
Same thing happens with me, probably mostly from being inspired by Soundgarden a lot. I got a bunch of 7-beat stuff, 5-beat shows up every now and then, some mixing with other signiatures some not. Got odd drops and lops every now and then within otherwise-regular time signiatures. I don't think of it as a thing to achieve or avoid, it's just a length of wire. You use whichever length of wire fits what you're making.
It's because Cornell started as drummer for Soundgarden. He could feel odd time signatures. Matt Cameron had the same gift. They were also surgical with alt tunings. They rarely get credit for how creative they actually were. They did it without becoming too proggy.
The definitive Soundgarden songs, this song can be use to showcase the ability and sound of Soundgarden. One of my favorite from them...thanks for the reaction.
Soundgarden has been my first introduction to alternative rock (or rock for that matter) for me. Always have a soft corner for any of their songs.
Your preoccupation with time signatures is one of the best aspects of your channel. I have no gift for determining one from another, but I dig awkward rhythms. I knew this would throw you a little lol
the dead note..the note that tried to live
😂 💯
I know its hard to pick a fav.but this was mine for many years.
OMG this song is amazing. One of my favorites this, and Fell on Black Days. Both are a 10 in my book. One of the things I look for in a song is it has to make me feel something. Both of these songs touch my heart. RIP Chris you are missed.
"Limo wreck" from the same album is their very best song, but I'm a lyrics person first so you might not like it.
It's a great choice imo. I'm not particularly a lyrics person and not particularly not-one either, somewhere in the middle.
This album was beautifully composed in my opinion
So many outstanding lyrics in this track as with most things written by Chris Cornell. ❤️
My favorite Soundgarden song!
I watch a lot of music reaction videos on here. When it comes to explaining things from a technical standpoint yours are by far the best.
It’s almost incomprehensible that a rock loving gen x dude like this guy wouldn’t already be familiar with Soundgarden songs. Maybe he was anti grunge back in the day?
Pretty much, yeah.
Plenty of metal fans and mainstream hard rock fans weren't into alternative and/or grunge back in the day.
Soundgarden could play their instruments like no other..unless it's Zeppelin..
When this album came out I tried to copy these drums and failed for a week straight- I am not a good drummer. I still love it today. Nice reaction.
Amazing album. Ridiculous
Fantastic, honest analysis. I love this song but I appreciate your opinion and I actually like the song more after watching this. I look forward to exploring your channel.
I love this song, glad you listened to the studio version 👍
I haven't watched your reaction yet, but I hope you love and appreciate this song just as much as I do. It's hard for me not to sing along with this song.
I’ve always been fascinated by their odd time signatures. Nice breakdown of the bass. Thank you.
Bought the album when I was 15 and been a fan since.
clearly, dude has a masterful knowledge of music technicality .... it's rare but very gratifying watching a reaction where a person actually has a clue and knows what he/she is talking about ... loved the song as is, but this made me appreciate it even more
Love this song
Love Soundgarden
Love Chris Cornell
That was a 10/10. Their other songs are just off the charts
One of my all time favs. Thanks for the reaction.
LETS GOOOO, glad you like it man... Idk which reaction I like more, your reaction to the song or to my username LMAO
Genius review and retrospective. Once again I appreciate the thoughtful comments on my favorite Soundgarden song!!
I'm a Huge, obsessive, soundgarden fan since day one, and I completely agree with your final analysis not my favorite but I certainly enjoy it when it's on. I am also hoping you can react to Burden in my Hand from the same album. I love this song, going back to it time and again, but I can't figure out why I love it so much, it's almost hypnotic for me. I've found that your reviews are extremely insightful and your analysis would be very interesting
I think burden in my hand is from down on the upside.
I love this song. Great reaction.
The vocals are super abstract
R.I.P Chris, we miss you.
RIP Chris ❤️
Superunknown is definitely not 1997
Yeah, 1994
The video to the title track is the most 1994 thing ever.
The thing about Soundgarden is the lyrics are smarter than the average grunge band (sorry Kurt and Layne) the tuning is unorthodox as it’s time signatures but, it always kills. Even on Half where he sings Mr Full Mr Have kills Mr Empty Hand. There’s a profound meaning behind it.
Yeah! I think if a song gives you an unusual or interesting time sig. it gets bumped to the 6+ range, then their talent, how they gel, magic... all gets put on top of that. Better than many, and not their best. Feels good within the album. No one would be disappointed if they don't play this at a show.
How about a 15/4 on that time signature? You ever just put that technical stuff aside and feel the song without being so analytical? Lyrically it’s genius.
That's the problem with training: it's not forgettable. So...be careful what you study...
Being analytical can make you appreciate the song even more. It's like explaining the science behind a sunset. It shouldn't ruin the magic, it should enhance it.
@@unifiedcodetheory8406 exactly, as a classical musician (pianist) it is impossible to stop being analytical. 4/15 you can use many combinations! it is very good to be able to analyze and enjoy music at the same time but find people who does the same is priceless
I think that's why I tend to forget about the denominator and just say 3-beat or 4-beat or such. Means as much as it needs to mean for whatever I'm playing with minimal distraction from other elements. Also I'll often think of a time signiature just in terms of a dropped beat (or a tacked-on extra one), rather than thinking of it as switching, because half the time that's more like what's actually happening. For instance in the verses here I'd just call it 4-beat with a dropped beat in the middle. Works don't it?
It's fair enough for however others want to think of it though. If they think the other detail is important then good for them. I think it isn't and good for me. Same with the degree to which someone wants to focus on the technical vs the feel (or indeed as mentioned in this thread, the technical bolstering the feel). I say let people have their critic styles. It's nice that it varies.
Chris Cornell said things everybody thinks, but are afraid to say, because of public shame. There is nothing wrong with admitting you are hurting
"THE FRENCH REPUBLIC'S NATIONAL ANTHEM IS SAVING US"!
One of my top ten songs of all time.
Just finished watching your reaction and I respect your opinion. I'm curious though, can you explain what ghost notes are? I've heard the term before on your channel as well as other reactor channels. I love music, but I've never understood the technical side. I hope you have a great weekend.
Ghost notes can be a number of things. Usually they are sub-harmonics that aren't actually played but are created through the resonance of other soundwaves crossing frequencies. They can also be played intentionally as a very subtle undertone.
5/7 to a 4:4. Ones of the best
You sound like me I never knew the name of the song
Greatness.
7/4 + 8/4. That you don't comment on the vocal performance is discouraging.
...I should have stayed in BED...
Beyond the unknown.
It’s 4/4, 3/4, 4/4, 4/4
David . If you find the time , could you perhaps react to Red Hot Chili Peppers - Easily - Live at Hyde Park ?
Like you haven’t heard this song? My son has and he is 2.
In mid 1990 I started getting into Prog Rock and Jazz, which I became totally and completely engrossed in. It's all I listened to from 1990 to the early 2000's. I intentionally avoided listening to bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and others like them. I avoided those bands and other bands that sounded like them like the plague. So no, prior to doing this reaction I had not heard the song.
thsi album was made in 1994 not 1997 lol
Not 1997 but 1994
Can you please react to Garbage song called The Creeps
Music video version Please
I don't see that one in the que, so it would have to be a fresh request. You can suggest songs on here, and if your suggestion happens to already be in the que, I am more than happy to add your name to the requesters of that song. However in order to make fresh brand new requests, you have to be a Bronze Tier member on the Patreon page. It's only $5 per month and you can make fresh requests, along with watch all the videos I've done that CZcams blocked and participate in Patreon community events and enjoy exclusive content for Patreon members only.
15/8?
Not work in the rain. Make music.
You pay so much attention to the timing of the music that you miss the music. Classic millennial snafu.
I'm really confused, what does being a millennial have to do with following a time signature? I'm a bassist, we're literally trained to count and pay attention to the timing above everything else. That is what we do. I don't see how being a millennial has to do with anything honestly, especially considering I'm not in that age bracket anyways.
@@THEDavidHeretic it's just a let down in any reaction when after the first "punch" of a great song from a great band occurs, the reactor just comments on odd time signatures. And sorry if I mis-generationed you. Don't sue!
Seriously, no offense. I'm a HUGE Rush fan so, as a bassist, I'm sure you know Geddy Lee who I'm also a HUGE fan of and his time signatures are off the wall.
@@cano21 Your comment confuses me... You're upset that an experienced musician reactor is paying attention to the technical components of a song? And where did he miss the music? He gave a review at the end of the video where he talks about all of the insturments in the song, and Chris Cornell's vocals. So tell me - where did he miss the music?
Generation names are arbitrary nonsense made up by advertisers. People should forget about them, they're pretty meaningless seperations.
