    The song that saved my sanity. I was in a depressive episode (though I didn’t really recognize it that way at the time)….. but I would cry on the way to work every day. I figured out that if I cued this song up at a certain spot on the commute, it would pump me up enough to get in the door instead of doing something stupid like not showing up or worse….. I’d take breaks and go to the RR and cry and tell myself “one more time around.” They saved my sanity, helped me keep my job, and I’m still here.

    Credit to the drummer for making this groove despite the odd time. The album this is on (same one as Like Suicide) is a genuine classic - my 14 year old self was right for once! Thanks as ever for a well reasoned and fun reaction.

    Cornell said the thing about time signatures in Soundgarden songs is that they never tried to make it weird, it’s just how they came out.

      Same thing happens with me, probably mostly from being inspired by Soundgarden a lot. I got a bunch of 7-beat stuff, 5-beat shows up every now and then, some mixing with other signiatures some not. Got odd drops and lops every now and then within otherwise-regular time signiatures. I don't think of it as a thing to achieve or avoid, it's just a length of wire. You use whichever length of wire fits what you're making.

    • @pitpride1220
      @pitpride1220 Před rokem +4

      It's because Cornell started as drummer for Soundgarden. He could feel odd time signatures. Matt Cameron had the same gift. They were also surgical with alt tunings. They rarely get credit for how creative they actually were. They did it without becoming too proggy.

    The thing about Soundgarden is the lyrics are smarter than the average grunge band (sorry Kurt and Layne) the tuning is unorthodox as it’s time signatures but, it always kills. Even on Half where he sings Mr Full Mr Have kills Mr Empty Hand. There’s a profound meaning behind it.

  • @heyskipj
    @heyskipj Před 3 lety +4

    Yeah! I think if a song gives you an unusual or interesting time sig. it gets bumped to the 6+ range, then their talent, how they gel, magic... all gets put on top of that. Better than many, and not their best. Feels good within the album. No one would be disappointed if they don't play this at a show.

  • @josephamccarty
    @josephamccarty Před 3 lety +8

    How about a 15/4 on that time signature? You ever just put that technical stuff aside and feel the song without being so analytical? Lyrically it’s genius.

      @@unifiedcodetheory8406 exactly, as a classical musician (pianist) it is impossible to stop being analytical. 4/15 you can use many combinations! it is very good to be able to analyze and enjoy music at the same time but find people who does the same is priceless

    • @Torthrodhel
      @Torthrodhel Před 2 lety

      I think that's why I tend to forget about the denominator and just say 3-beat or 4-beat or such. Means as much as it needs to mean for whatever I'm playing with minimal distraction from other elements. Also I'll often think of a time signiature just in terms of a dropped beat (or a tacked-on extra one), rather than thinking of it as switching, because half the time that's more like what's actually happening. For instance in the verses here I'd just call it 4-beat with a dropped beat in the middle. Works don't it?
      It's fair enough for however others want to think of it though. If they think the other detail is important then good for them. I think it isn't and good for me. Same with the degree to which someone wants to focus on the technical vs the feel (or indeed as mentioned in this thread, the technical bolstering the feel). I say let people have their critic styles. It's nice that it varies.

    • @THEDavidHeretic
      @THEDavidHeretic  Před 3 lety +2

      Ghost notes can be a number of things. Usually they are sub-harmonics that aren't actually played but are created through the resonance of other soundwaves crossing frequencies. They can also be played intentionally as a very subtle undertone.
