Far Cry 2 details vs Far Cry 5

  • How FC2 holds up 10 years later. FC5 has its own attention to details that FC2 doesn't have, this comparison doesn't mean FC5 has nothing to show.
Both games run under a different version of the Dunia engine (Ubisoft-modified CryEngine).
If you don't know which game is which, Far Cry 5 always cuts before Far Cry 2, clips fade in when it's just another example from the same game.
    Recorded on PC, ultra settings.
    What's missing:
    - FC2: Rain, no dynamic weather in FC5 • Rain in Far Cry 2
    - FC5: Fire through walls with armor piercing ammo • Far Cry 5 - How To Get...
    - FC5: Large ammo boxes explode • Hey Crowbcat:
    - FC2: Golden AK-47 variant, less prone to corrosion • Far Cry 2 Gold AK47
Song samples from Delta Force Black Hawk Down OST: • Delta Force - Black Ha... ; • Delta Force - Black Ha... ; • Delta Force - Black Ha...

In some cases the executable file of the engine becomes the games executable file which hints embedding.

Far cry 2 is super interesting to me just because it perfectly encapsulates the difference between immersion and realism. If you watch jonathon ferguson's review of the guns in the game, they get most of it wrong, but despite that, it still feels intense. It doesnt make sense for the ak to explode like that, but while playing the game, feels a lot more tense and immersive. Honestly games in that mid 2000s era are really interesting with their attention to detail and creative uses of physics (fear, might and magic, sr2 etc.). I love that we're no longer in the brown military shooter era of games, but I do miss the emphasis that was put on the player's effect on the environment from ragdoll kicking or minor destructible environments ala gears of war 1.

There are plenty of big budget games that get years of development time, and still don’t have the sort of ‘extra’ details that extend beyond normal gameplay that you sometimes saw a decade ago. I think the comments below about poor management being the case are probably right.
Maybe because of longer development cycles. Wouldn’t surprise me if, in the four or five years it took to make a game back then, individual devs had more free time to work on nifty touches in spare time, especially unplanned ones. Shorter development time means less time to add features on the fly.

I wanted to see where it all (mostly, Far Cry 1 is terrible) began, so I got Far Cry 2. Definitely a different take, but I enjoyed it all the same. The real fans aren't the ones who buy your game blindly at face value, only knowing the most basic information and making the purchase without taking into consideration all the little details. It's all because the little details and the hidden animations and the tiny, pointless things are what make the games seem more real than they really are. It's what makes the difference between another sequel to a game franchise and a real masterpiece. Same with Assassin's Creed III, IV and Syndicate. Same Combat. Now Assassin's Creed: Origins. That is a masterpiece. It really feels like time was put into it with its fidelity, sense of realism and immersion, the finer things that really do matter actually pop when you look for them and enhance your gaming experience just that much more when you find them. The attention to detail in older games is always incredible, but at the same time, I feel there's a harsh reality surrounding it. Back in those days, having immersive, highly detailed, interactive environments and such made your game stand out from all the others, especially in the middle of the Xbox, PS2, GameCube era, and the early to mid-Xbox 360 and PS3 era. Game devs and companies pushed themselves to showcase that their game engines were capable of handling all the amazing physics as well as how intricate and clever of an Ai they can design to accompany it so that we, the consumers, would buy it and play to see for ourselves.
Nowadays it's all about dumb 4K resolution this, ray-tracing that, microtransaction all those, live-service everything rather than actual immersion and attention to detail. I'll take 480p with the power to destroy a whole city in an amazing, particle effect, debris filled mushroom cloud that makes my system bow down to its knees over some bullshit fancy lighting effects that make next to no fucking difference unless I use a microscope and stand still in one specific spot of the entire game all day, every day.

Video games don't have to mimic real life completely, none do. No one wants to play a game where you run out of sprint, or have to manually reload magazines etc. It's a great comparison nonetheless.
