Do you notice how even after all these years later, Doc & Tommy take a step back when the other solos? Class like this is virtually gone from society.

Very VERY classy tribute to one of the truly great wits and entertainers of all time.
He was, by almost any standard: THE BEST.
Tommy and Doc played their heart out on this one.

2:05 run was phenomenal. What a great arrangement of one of the all-time "musicians tunes". They stretched that ending for 17 seconds!

Sweetest version ever. Knowing why it was played makes it all the more lovely and blue.

Every note they play is gold, covered with hundred year old wine....and tears

  • @gstockwell5315

Sadly Tommy passed without this type of remembering. Just sad

Truly one of the most moving renditions of this song. I wish they would have put this out on a CD. Doc, Tommy and Ed along with a wonderful string ensemble. I cry every time I hear it. It is so beautiful. A very touching tribute to Johnny!!! God Bless all of them.

    Wow -
Moving tribute to an American icon. Doc and Tommy's horn and the strings are hypnotizing. A stunning performance. RIP Johnny and Tommy.

...Ed Shhaunessy is gone, and so is Tommy Newsom...I think that only Doc is the last member of the old Tonight Show band that is still living.

The Tonight Show Band was the last of the Swing Bands. Was watching that night as usual. As a tenor sax player in jr high and high school, Tommy Newsom blew me away.

Just think how hard this must have been for those guys...
...Playing their recently departed best friend's favorite song as a tribute...
    ...Wow.

"Here's That Rainy Day" is the song. Even the title is a proper tribute after losing our sunshine. I'm just happy he was with us for a while.

Just like Johnny. Doc is a class act. The passing of an era. Beautiful.

I have been watching this clip for years. It is still as emotional as the first viewing.

  • @daveluttinen2547

A wonderful piece of music to begin with and probably one of the most moving arrangements I have ever heard. Such wonderful musicians that we were entertained by, courtesy of Johnny Carson, a comedian clearly in a league of his own.

Did Jay Leno PERSONALLY come on here and dislike this?
Who dislikes DOC and DAVE'S BAND playing a song for not only a deceased man, but a GRAT man, the Once and Future and Forever King of Late Night!
    RIP Johnny!

Boy , this was a lush night on the Letterman Show , strings and all , a classic salute to an era that doesn't seem to be there any more with the end of the Carson Show. Thanks for sharing .
