    In this video I want to present you with a new kick plugin. This one was reccomended to me by @mrspeaker-ch in our recent interview and after having explored it for a bit, I must say I'm very happy with it. I'll first go over how I used to make kick drums, Then I'll explain some of the main features of the plugin & make a kick from scratch. Finally I'll give my opinion on how the plugin could be improved.
    ==================================================
    Projektor is an alias I started around august 2019. Under this alias I started posting psytrance music with a clear emphasis on theming and a more progressive or mainstream style than other producers. The goal of the Projektor alias is to release memorable music which works well on the dancefloor. Around january 2020 I started posting tutorials and other helpful videos on youtube again under the Projektor alias. Together with these videos I started selling several products which can be used to improve your productions. I have always believed music production knowledge should be shared and that is now one of my main goals with the Projektor alias. Currently Projektor is the only alias under which I release music, videos or products but this might change in the future!

    Great video and great plugin. And thanks a lot for letting us all know about it :) I struggled as well with a few things, especially zooming. Right click and drag will zoom in/out. There is a toggle next to the EQ label which hides the EQ curve when disabled. It also disables the EQ unfortunately... But in gain mode you will see an icon on the bottom right which allows you to disable the spectrum at least. With the buttons below the wave export you can en/disable a few other gui elements which helps to declutter the interface further. If you go to presets (top left) -> settings you can save the current configuration as initial state so you won't have to bother every single time. Drag and drop is not a thing right now, but I managed in Bitwig at least to paste the sample (cmd/ctrl + V) at the playhead position.

    Kick 2 has the main advantage that I can load a kick I like from another track as a sample, and visualize it and try to closely rebuild the kick.But I think not all people want that for their genre. Sometimes you want to "copy" the feel of a kick, an you may or may not do that easely with this new plugin alone. You would need an beat synced oscilloscope where you can overlay two signals (like the free Oscillator VST: Signalizer)

    • @Projektor_music
      @Projektor_music  Před 3 měsíci +1

      honestly I've found you can just use psyscope to match kicks tightly enough to work. Also signalizer is an osciloscope, not oscilator...

    I bought this right after your last vid, where you mentioned it. The direct dragging of the WAV doesn't work. But you should be able to drag any Audio from the Microsoft Explorer into Live.
    This includes the freshly exported kicks of this plugin.

    • @Projektor_music
      @Projektor_music  Před 3 měsíci

      generally the phase doesn't matter in that case. Although broadly in psytrance the kick & bas sdo play on top or each other and I've even seen it in hi-tech. Some people will argue that having the kick & bass in phase even when they don't overlap creates a kidn of glueing effect between the subs of the kick & bass. I've had success with this and also had situations in which it did not matter or made a bad bassline but some people do find success with doing this.

    I think that if you also open the explorer window in elevated mode (meaning with administrator access) you will be able to drag and drop the wav-file from the explorer window into Ableton running in admin mode. The reason for this not working as it is now, is because the two processes are running in different user context and it is a security measure not having the two processes to be able to interact with each other.

    I finally got around to trying this and the linear graph is a huge turnoff. All of the character and finetuning of a psy kick is at the front end and you have to zoom right in. Imo you might as well use any soft synth with an MSEG that you already have. Kick 2 is king for kicks because the log scale time axis gives more editing real estate to the critical front end.
    Saved myself 22e though so it’s not all bad 😅

      @@Projektor_music nope. Log scale or gtfo, for me personally. That’s a level of tedium I’m not prepared to put with up. I can achieve a good enough phase alignment with subtle changes to the overall length in Kick 2 or by using PHA-979 and even though it’s a compromise it’s way less annoying than having to constantly zoom and in and out for basic editing, of which there is a lot of when making and tweaking a kick.

      @Projektor_music  Před 3 měsíci

      @@alexyakas the kind of processing you want to do any creative stuff I reccomend not doing it with the kick (apart from filter transitions, kick rolls and mixing stuff, but I have addressed how to make sure the kick still works wel in terms of phase rotation in all of those regards.) Moreover, a tool like you mentioned can solve an issue, but also introduce new issues. The point of this plugin instead is that you don't have to resolve to those tools as it is build into the instrument...

    • @alexyakas
      @alexyakas Před 3 měsíci

      @@Projektor_music Obviously you're free to do whatever you want but your approach is completely wrong in my opinion. Music comes first. Work on your sound. Sound design your kick and bass so they reflect your vision. Any problems present later, can always be fixed in pre-mix session. By the way, you write "apart from filter transitions, kick rolls and mixing stuff". EQ, Saturation / Distortion and Multiband processing are mainly mixing tools and they phase shift your signal big time, how come you mention these as "apart from..."
      When you sound design the kick and bass you will at some point phase align them as much as possible, what's the difference doing that form the beginning than rendering the kick applying processing and then realign the phase with the bass? 😂

    • @Projektor_music
      @Projektor_music  Před 3 měsíci

      @@alexyakas "but I have addressed how to make sure the kick still works wel in terms of phase rotation in all of those regards." there is a massive part behind it that which is important. You need to use the tools correctly. BTW saturation/distortion doesn't shift phase, filters do. Maybe your distortion/saturation comes with a high pass filter build in (this is quite common).
      The reason why I say you should allign the kick & stick with it is because it allows you to focus on that what actually matters: the musical idea! the kick & bass have to work from a technical perspective so I suggest getting those out of the way quickly, while maintaining flexibility, which I believe this plugin does. That way you can spend more time on the parts where you can actually be creative!

    my only gripe is you can't import clicks/transients-- add this and its def will be the best kick plugin in the history of EDM..it sucks you have to guess your kick length on kick2 ...so dumb. They need to make the interface like shaperbox - same colors, similar , and transient shaping with just draggin in and not worrying about phase.

      @@Projektor_music You don't need to have the kick and bass on the same pitch to phase allign them. If the kick has a liitle pitch envelope beyond the transient it will punch through much better and there's still plenty of room to adjust the phase. The phase will never be 100% perfect anyway so there's no need to worry too much about it. If you're making anything but a single pitch bassline there will be pretty bad phase shift on any other note than the one you've adjusted you kick & bass phase to. It's just a matter of keeping it in check and keeping a clean headroom nothing more.
      But, then I'm also not producing "pure" psytrance and only using these kinds of basses for some parts with lots of pitch changes.
