My wife sees so much gatekeeping of tarot readers on tiktok, and most, if not all, only do free Y or N, which doesnt help in the long run, and everytime she asks for clarification on her problem, they end up blocking her, frustrating to say the least
OMG thanks for having this conversation. I'm a Jungian science based reader and don't do any of the "musts" she requires. She totally invalidated my entire practice. As I tell my students, there are as many roads to tarot as there are readers. The must is that you are ethical and honest, everything else is preference. Thanks for all you do!!
Maybe we do need some gatekeeping so that we can keep self-righteousness of her kind out. In 20 years of reading, I have never cleansed a deck and I don't intend to start. I mostly don't use spreads (gasp!), I often read with majors only and even though I'm pagan I don't have a sacred space to read in, I'll read anywhere, office, basement, kitchen, living room, park, bar. I'm a man so not very sacred and not very feminine. I don't read jumpers but I shuffle my decks to death because I love how a good hard shuffle feels and I don't educate people unless they ask about something and I'm in the mood to explain and no one has ever complained because they usually want answers to mundane questions about love, money, work, etc. So suck it lady. I can't stand self-righteousness.

I have stiff finger joints that have only gotten more painful over the years. I love shuffling live and reading the cards as they make themselves known to me in real time. That's my tarot shuffle love language. 🥰 But there will likely come a day when i can't do that anymore, and that's okay, too. Also, i felt it was pretty ableist of her to say "didn't even bother to learn the meanings of the cards" as if that's just so easy for everyone. I have discalculia, and learning the 5 through 8 range of all the suits was INCREDIBLY difficult. And i graduated magna cum laude from a tier one university...it's not as if i can't learn things. But to my brain, 5 and 7 are essentially the same number, and so are 6 and 8. There's no rhyme or reason to it, it's a cognitive processing disability. Even now, a lot of the time, my brain will blank on those and I read the art intuitively. Bit it's not because i don't care or didn't take the time, and honestly (maybe I am taking this a littler personally, but...) As someone is still in the process of learning (3 years strong), I was nervous about the 'right' or 'wrong' of doing tarot, because of alot of GATEKEEPERS on YT. Also, I am still learning the meaning of the cards (because repetition is my style of learning). But, practioners like YOU have made me feel so much better about practicing Tarot. Because you made it where people should do it at a pace that they should be comfortable with. Everyone is entitled to their own methods, interpretations, and how they choose to practice Tarot.
Really appreciated this Ethony, I was surprised at some of the stuff she said: the music being played? The way you shuffle? Cleansing cards after every reading? I’d love to have a sit down chat with her sometime and try to understand whether these are sincere beliefs or if she was saying what she thought she had to say to attract clients- feminine clients apparently. The femininity thing completely caught me off guard in particular. Beyond having a history of being created by males, the tarot is not just feminine in energy at all. Wow, not sure where to start! First of all thank you for doing this video. I say yes to more spicy videos. I think the one that bothered me the most was "you must teach, the cards and spirituality" I know I'm paraphrasing there. I can't even imagine the ego that thinks that is a must for a tarot reading. I read for myself, family and friends. If I started putting my spirituality on top of a reading when it wasn't part of the question or ask for, I would be called out so quick. Rightly so. Some I read for want just the answer, some want to know more about how I got the answer and are more interactive with the reading and meanings. Yes absolutely to empowering the querent!!! I don't have to put my spirituality forward or give a class on tarot reading to do that. I wonder why this person is so cut and dry. Tarot is a beautiful system of divination. It is certainly a system that can absorb all the wonderful, creative, heartfelt styles of reading. Yes I know there are scammers out there. it is not scamming to have a ethical, diverse, different reading style then the author of the tik-tok video.
I never claimed to be a "real" tarot reader so maybe she's not talking to me anyway but that said.... I almost entirely read for myself using jumpers. I didn't even know until this video that that's something frowned upon. Very interesting. I thought there is no wrong in readings, it's you applying your lens to the system. I think the only rules here are to learn the system and not to con people that you're going to solve their problems and make them happy or predict a future which they cannot change. I'm one who doesn't see tarot as a spiritual practice. I heard a quote, trusting yourself involves recognizing what you already know, and I feel that's what tarot does for people.

I don't watch tik tok I would be an angry old lady if I would. I read tarot since the 80'... the way that people read or present themselves had changed so much. I found important to have a good base but also each reader have their own style ! I am not there to educate anybody but if a person ask a question I will try to answer to my best knowledge. I feel this person is just making a big pub so people will go to her website and buy "the real thing" ... Sadly there will be some to believe her... As for me the ones who are used to come to me for their reading will continu they don't mind how I "cleaned or cleansed" my cards... they are paying me to know... I agree with you. She almost sounds like if you aren't Her, you're not for real. Everyone's gift is not the same, spirits, intuition and gifts speak differently to each one, styles are different with your personality. I agree with you. She is too hung up on rules. In reality, a true reader doesn't even need the cards. They are a tool, a visual aid for both the reader and the client.

I agree with everything you said. I also think she contradicts herself, especially with the thing about spreads and logic. Using a spread brings more intellect and logic into the reading. When you use a spread you are using a structure, a framework (intellect and logic) and fitting your intuition into that.
Absolutely love this video, Ethony! This tiktok person was wildly out of line about basically everything, sadly. You breaking it down and chatting about each point was perfection, and very much needed for this community. I have to randomly tell you this - I bought a deck from you years ago (A manifestation oracle deck with a unicorn on it I think it was from Australia and I couldn't find it in Canada) and a couple months ago my house was literally falling down a hill and the city had to do an emergency demolition and I lost so many things BUT your beautiful thank you card survived it under all the rubble! Blimey….The Tarot deck is a an unbound-book. And reading the cards 🃏 is reading a story-interpretation. I use intuition…. so it depends what I feel on the day…. I agree with you Ethony. One of my TikTok videos was kicked off because I spoke of the Devil card and domestic violence, Tiktok said it was for entertainment purposes only….. Tarot consultations with via video or in person are much deeper and obviously all sorts of situations are on the table. I don’t want to put myself in a position where I can only read with candles and music and crystals and incense. Yes that’s great when I have the time and energy, but I want to be able to read whenever and wherever. I do want to learn from the reader - but I learn by watching how they read, what spreads they use or don’t. Things like that. If I want to take a class, I’ll take a class. OMG - people need to just stay in their own lane.
I only read “jumpers” as clarifiers. To each their own. But I’m a gentle shuffler because I want my cards to last. I figure if I’m nice to the cards they will be nice to me. I agree with you on every point lol.

That first one had me like... wow!!! Guess I'm not a real reader then! Not everyone wants to learn or know the tarot, not everyone wants your guidance on their spiritual practice. If people book a reading with you they want to hear your perspective or translation or message or answer to the question they hired you for. If the question is “am I on the right spiritual path?” Then fine but honestly what people want to buy as a reading is nunya business. That’s between the client and their chosen reader wherever that reading is. Im surprised she didn’t try to convince people that you need face to face live zoom or in person readings only. Maybe if people just focused on what they need to do for their clients and not what other readers are doing or not doing that they don’t like this would be a better thing.
I watched your video -hit the thumbs up and left.. I rarely take time to comment because I honestly don’t even check reply’s to comments I make. First I realize TikTok is THE social platform but I’m old and it seems so impersonal to me. I’m sure it’s easier for the people who make the videos because they are so short. In my spirituality, which is an eclectic witch, I really don’t need Somebody who is claiming to be a professional on a divination tool ( tarot ) to make a short video about basically her personal opinions… And that is exactly what this lady has done. I have a been very intuitive since I was born.. But I don’t need somebody to tell me how to spot if somebody is fake.. because I can feel their energy immediately. So if I had to give a warning or post a video which I would never do, and I have no idea how to do that, I would say before one of the most powerful tools everybody has is intuition..learning that getting in tuned with that will not only guide you in your spiritual path ….it’ll also make you spot bull$hit or fake a mile away ….😂 Also, a tarot reading is fluid meaning that at that time where you are emotionally, if you keep going, the exact same way, your answer will be your most likely outcome however, you have the ability to change that… terrell readings are not the end all answer to your questions.. Rather a spiritual guide.
It's amazing how many people claim that their style of reading is the ONLY way to do it. They will pay lip service, often, to the notion that 'everybody has their own method,' but when you present them with a different method that you use yourself, they lose the plot! No no no. That's WRONG. You shouldn't use reversals. You should use reversals. You should never use clarification cards. You can use as many clarification cards as you want. ETC. I only have ONE standard that must be met. Does. It. Work? Does the reading give accurate/helpful results? If the answer is yes, I have no problem with the mechanics of the reading.
It sounds like she's explained HER preferences in tarot reading. I've had many accurate readings from different readers. No, read however you want with whatever way resonates with you.

What bothers me the most is her sexist approach that just because woman do they need to be calm, please, I'm ADHD, I'm chaotic naturally, but I study very hard to be able to read my cards and provide a good experience, and I cannot change my nature just to fit a box she decided we all women should be in
The only thing I hate is when the readings are so deep that they don't make any sense or so superficial that I could use a book to read for myself. I see those as a red flag. And there are some who read beautifully, but I just don't find them sincere - I feel that they do it only for the money and don't really care about their clients/viewers. I don't mind if they earn a lot or charge a lot - in fact, there are many on CZcams who charge a lot, but they are amazing, caring readers - but there are many who don't read with a real desire to help. And I can sense that strongly. I also don't mind if the readings are very short, but I can sense if they're coming from a sincere heart or not. There are others who pretend to be psychic and just say a lot of nonsense. That's what agitates me.
I am very new to Tarot and started following Erica with hopes of getting new insights and learning more. I had to stop because the more videos I watched, they just felt so judgmental of other readers and I found I couldn’t connect with her because of that. It just seemed so antithetical to what I thought Tarot was supposed to be about and why I wanted to learn in the first place. I have since found other creators like Ethony that have made it a very welcoming experience.
Everyone has their own process. A lot of readers have come at me because I use cards as a tool to assist my intuition and many times the book definition is not what i get from the card.
Keep doing what you do. Any authentic reader will always tell you that intuition is an added foundation to the meaning. I miss reading just intuitively, the readings were always so much deeper. Tiktok tarot readers , because it's so saturated now, the pond is small so they're going after one another as a form of ego and competition " trust me..don't trust them" call outs in fake readings is just another form of advertising. These readers ( a lot ) use tarot as a means of financial support, so anything that threatens that 💲, will attack. Again just have fun and keep going. Sincerely a fellow tarot reader.

The femininity thing completely caught me off guard in particular. Beyond having a history of being created by males, the tarot is not just feminine in energy at all. (Looking at you Magician, Emperor, etc). I almost wish she’d respond to you just so we can understand what the heck she meant by that.
The last point from her about gatekeeping makes me wonder if she actually understands what that term means- because if I were trying to do a video on gatekeeping in tarot examples, hers would be a very clear example

Wow, not sure where to start! First of all thank you for doing this video. I say yes to more spicy videos.
I think the one that bothered me the most was "you must teach, the cards and spirituality" I know I'm paraphrasing there. I can't even imagine the ego that thinks that is a must for a tarot reading. I read for myself, family and friends. If I started putting my spirituality on top of a reading when it wasn't part of the question or ask for, I would be called out so quick. Rightly so. Some I read for want just the answer, some want to know more about how I got the answer and are more interactive with the reading and meanings. Yes absolutely to empowering the querent!!! I don't have to put my spirituality forward or give a class on tarot reading to do that.
I wonder why this person is so cut and dry. Tarot is a beautiful system of divination. It is certainly a system that can absorb all the wonderful, creative, heartfelt styles of reading. Yes I know there are scammers out there. it is not scamming to have a ethical, diverse, different reading style then the author of the tik-tok video.
I never claimed to be a "real" tarot reader so maybe she's not talking to me anyway but that said.... I almost entirely read for myself using jumpers. I didn't even know until this video that that's something frowned upon. But I don't mind being a fake ass reader because those jumpers almost always tell me EXACTLY what I need to hear in that moment even if it hurts. Anyway, spicy Ethony is fun. ☺

Very interesting. I thought there is no wrong in readings, it's you applying your lens to the system. I think the only rules here are to learn the system and not to con people that you're going to solve their problems and make them happy or predict a future which they cannot change. I'm one who doesn't see tarot as a spiritual practice. I heard a quote, trusting yourself involves recognizing what you already know, and I feel that's what tarot does for people.

I don't watch tik tok I would be an angry old lady if I would. I read tarot since the 80'... the way that people read or present themselves had changed so much. I found important to have a good base but also each reader have their own style ! I am not there to educate anybody but if a person ask a question I will try to answer to my best knowledge. I feel this person is just making a big pub so people will go to her website and buy "the real thing" ... Sadly there will be some to believe her... As for me the ones who are used to come to me for their reading will continu they don't mind how I "cleaned or cleansed" my cards... they are paying me to know... I agree with you. She almost sounds like if you aren't Her, you're not for real. Everyone's gift is not the same, spirits, intuition and gifts speak differently to each one, styles are different with your personality. I agree with you. She is too hung up on rules. In reality, a true reader doesn't even need the cards. They are a tool, a visual aid for both the reader and the client.

Erica talks a lot about the ego but her entire spiel is based on her own ego . The art of tarot reading is very intuitive and here she is putting a lot of rules !!

I agree with everything you said. I also think she contradicts herself, especially with the thing about spreads and logic. Using a spread brings more intellect and logic into the reading. When you use a spread you are using a structure, a framework (intellect and logic) and fitting your intuition into that.
Absolutely love this video, Ethony! This tiktok person was wildly out of line about basically everything, sadly. You breaking it down and chatting about each point was perfection, and very much needed for this community. I have to randomly tell you this - I bought a deck from you years ago (A manifestation oracle deck with a unicorn on it I think it was from Australia and I couldn't find it in Canada) and a couple months ago my house was literally falling down a hill and the city had to do an emergency demolition and I lost so many things BUT your beautiful thank you card survived it under all the rubble! Blimey….The Tarot deck is a an unbound-book. And reading the cards 🃏 is reading a story-interpretation. I use intuition…. so it depends what I feel on the day…. I agree with you Ethony. One of my TikTok videos was kicked off because I spoke of the Devil card and domestic violence, Tiktok said it was for entertainment purposes only….. Tarot consultations with via video or in person are much deeper and obviously all sorts of situations are on the table. Gosh that woman has SO MANY rules and regulations, she sounds judgemental and hostile… I’m getting ‘Judgment’ card Moon card vibes, she’s living in fear and needs to go with the flow… talk about EGO! I don’t want to put myself in a position where I can only read with candles and music and crystals and incense. Yes that’s great when I have the time and energy, but I want to be able to read whenever and wherever. I do want to learn from the reader - but I learn by watching how they read, what spreads they use or don’t. Things like that. If I want to take a class, I’ll take a class. OMG - people need to just stay in their own lane.

That first one had me like... wow!!! Guess I'm not a real reader then! I cleanse them, pray over them, knock on them , charge with crystals etc, when I feel called to, if it's weighing on me to do it. It's not a constant thing for me. Not everyone wants to learn or know the tarot, not everyone wants your guidance on their spiritual practice. If people book a reading with you they want to hear your perspective or translation or message or answer to the question they hired you for. If the question is “am I on the right spiritual path?” Then fine but honestly what people want to buy as a reading is nunya business. That’s between the client and their chosen reader wherever that reading is. Im surprised she didn’t try to convince people that you need face to face live zoom or in person readings only. Maybe if people just focused on what they need to do for their clients and not what other readers are doing or not doing that they don’t like this would be a better thing.

I watched your video -hit the thumbs up and left.. I rarely take time to comment because I honestly don’t even check reply’s to comments I make. First I realize TikTok is THE social platform but I’m old and it seems so impersonal to me. I’m sure it’s easier for the people who make the videos because they are so short. In my spirituality, which is an eclectic witch, I really don’t need Somebody who is claiming to be a professional on a divination tool ( tarot ) to make a short video about basically her personal opinions… And that is exactly what this lady has done. I have a been very intuitive since I was born.. But I don’t need somebody to tell me how to spot if somebody is fake.. because I can feel their energy immediately. So if I had to give a warning or post a video which I would never do, and I have no idea how to do that, I would say before one of the most powerful tools everybody has is intuition..learning that getting in tuned with that will not only guide you in your spiritual path ….it’ll also make you spot bull$hit or fake a mile away ….😂 Also, a tarot reading is fluid meaning that at that time where you are emotionally, if you keep going, the exact same way, your answer will be your most likely outcome however, you have the ability to change that… terrell readings are not the end all answer to your questions.. Rather a spiritual guide.
It's amazing how many people claim that their style of reading is the ONLY way to do it. They will pay lip service, often, to the notion that 'everybody has their own method,' but when you present them with a different method that you use yourself, they lose the plot! No no no. That's WRONG. You shouldn't use reversals. You should use reversals. You should never use clarification cards. You can use as many clarification cards as you want. ETC.
I only have ONE standard that must be met. Does. It. Work? Does the reading give accurate/helpful results? If the answer is yes, I have no problem with the mechanics of the reading.

What bothers me the most is her sexist approach that just because woman do they need to be calm, please, I'm ADHD, I'm chaotic naturally, but I study very hard to be able to read my cards and provide a good experience, and I cannot change my nature just to fit a box she decided we all women should be in
The only thing I hate is when the readings are so deep that they don't make any sense or so superficial that I could use a book to read for myself. I see those as a red flag. And there are some who read beautifully, but I just don't find them sincere - I feel that they do it only for the money and don't really care about their clients/viewers. I don't mind if they earn a lot or charge a lot - in fact, there are many on CZcams who charge a lot, but they are amazing, caring readers - but there are many who don't read with a real desire to help. And I can sense that strongly. I also don't mind if the readings are very short, but I can sense if they're coming from a sincere heart or not. There are others who pretend to be psychic and just say a lot of nonsense. That's what agitates me.
I am very new to Tarot and started following Erica with hopes of getting new insights and learning more. I had to stop because the more videos I watched, they just felt so judgmental of other readers and I found I couldn’t connect with her because of that. It just seemed so antithetical to what I thought Tarot was supposed to be about and why I wanted to learn in the first place. I have since found other creators like Ethony that have made it a very welcoming experience.

Everyone has their own process. A lot of readers have come at me because I use cards as a tool to assist my intuition and many times the book definition is not what i get from the card.
Keep doing what you do. Any authentic reader will always tell you that intuition is an added foundation to the meaning. I miss reading just intuitively, the readings were always so much deeper. Tiktok tarot readers , because it's so saturated now, the pond is small so they're going after one another as a form of ego and competition " trust me..don't trust them" call outs in fake readings is just another form of advertising. These readers ( a lot ) use tarot as a means of financial support, so anything that threatens that 💲, will attack.
