I run a ram 5500 hooklift in Colorado. We go everywhere, including up in the mountains on switchbacks, back alleys downtown. Did a parallel park deliveryon the street between two vehicles. You can even use a strap with the hooklift with the truck perpendicular to the can to pull the can forward when you dont have room to get the truck in front of the bin.
I really need to make a video of all the "additional" things a hooklift can do when you add a strap to the mix. It takes hook lifts to another even higher level. Thanks for sharing your experiences and uses of your hooklift truck. I appreciate you watching and supporting the channel Matt.

I have a tree service and hook lifts are intriguing. I am thinking about diversifying my services not just using the setup for hauling tree debris. Finding the sweet spot for over or under CDL and hauling capacity can be a mental merry-go-round. Your content is very informative.
Erick, I wish I could give you my personal recommendation on this, but the truth is I have only owned Palfinger. I don't have any experience with any other brands. Wish I could help more on this, but I don't know those brands well enough to make a solid recommendation.
I have got my mind set on hooklift, going to try and sell my trailer and boxes and move towards hooklift, just because of right spaces. And to get rid of the need for CDL. And because I run and operate multple businesses, so my plan is to get hooklift utility bodies, flat decks, dump boxes, chipper boxes and enclosed tool storage. But I'm still not at the point where I can just go out and purchase these trucks outright
Having the ability to haul and transport endless types of bodies is an absolute game changer. There are literally hundreds of different ideas and applications for a hooklift body. I'm still waiting for someone to start building a super high end style camper that I can haul around on my Peterbilts, that's a Hooklift. That would absolute get my money.
After watching a few dozen of your videos I've decided that I could never make a go of it in your occupation. At 67 y.o. , I am a horrible judge of character. And about the third time someone screwed me over , I'd be out "taking people to the train station"

Great video and I totally agree.. I just added a tandem cable pull. I have ph and spent this year trying to transition to all standard rail dumpsters. For me it was about understanding the market and not jumping in feet first. Looking back I should have just saved more money up and bought hook.
I fully agree that a hooklift truck beats a roll off trailer in every aspect, but I dont think they are nearly as good as a roll off truck. For the small amount of time you save by not having to hook the cable to the bin and the ability to get a bin off the truck at odd angles or slightly tighter spots, I dont think its worth sacrificing the shear heavy duty capabilities of a roll off truck. In my opinion, nothing beats a tri axle roll off with a well built system. Great video 👍
I have never owned or operated a rolloff truck with cable, so I can't share my experience on that part. What I do know is this tho.... I can deliver in parking structures, 4 levels below ground level and I have a construction company in my book of business I do that on a weekly basis for. I do know that to make a swap out, I can technically do it without getting out of the truck if I choose to, while a cable operator gets in and out 6 times. Not only am I faster and more efficient, I'm safer... Every time a driver gets in or out of a truck, a slip and fall occurrence increases and that effects your insurance rates regardless of who you are to how many or not how many claims you have had, its built into their risk matrix. Maybe someday I'll own a cable truck and change my mind, but for now... hook lifts are the right choice for me and my business. Thanks for the support and taking time to watch the channel.
I’d love a hook lift on a F600 for my landscape business but I’m afraid to even ask what that system cost! Dump trailers are basically free by comparison. For $60,000 you can buy a F350 and a 12k pound tailer and legally haul 4 ton… Im guessing a hook lift F600 would be well over $120,000 and haul about the same. These things are sadly cost prohibitive unless you are a pure container company but it’s a really nice setup for sure.
Using hooklift trucks in a "pure container" business is clearly a hooklift trucks most efficient tool. I don't use mine in other business's so I'm not the best to seek advice on this question. I wish I could say one way or another. I do appreciate you supporting and watching the channel.
Seems there is a few less tires and brakes to maintain. Depending on how many axles a trailer has, that is 4 more tires and 4 more sets of brake chamber components that now have to be changed out periodically or greased and maintained. Oh....and one more license plate to buy. Trailers have license plates each year.
Less tires on the ground = more money in my pocket. And let's just all be honest for a minute... tires get destroyed in this industry and I can't remember a single time anyone gets excited about spending money on new tires. Buy the best tires money can buy, keep them properly inflated and hopefully have a little good luck on your side and they'll last longer than the average guy running in the landfill.
I just started driving cable roll off and my god do I miss the hook it was 1000x better to use. Way easier to snake that box into a tight spot and maneuver it like a trailer. Much harder to screw up and hop the rail catastrophically. Also you don't have to worry about digging the rails into a driveway doing a touch off or putting on gloves so you can put the cable on the box.

Great video! One question, when you say “de rated truck” exactly what do you mean? I’ve heard of people doing this locally but not at the cdl level, so are you saying getting a 33k truck and it’s rated/registered legally for under 26k(25,999lbs)? In my mind - and experience - there is no chance that a trailer is a better choice than a hook lift unless you’re hauling heavy boxes interstate - and you’re not doing that with a pickup pulling a trailer (you’re doing it with a semi and a serious roll off trailer). And on the weight thing, I think it’s the same in every state - if you’re pulling a trailer with a GVW >10k# you need a class A CDL.
"there's a reason all the bigger companies don't use trailers" tell that to Omni Source. I haven't seen a single hook lift in their northwestern Ohio fleet. I even asked one of their drivers why they sent him out with a semi trailer roll off. he said cause he can haul more weight than a straight truck. guess they never heard of drop axles.
Honestly, This comes down to you. Do you feel you can build a better brand on your own? Or do you feel you would prefer to join up with someone who already has a system in place? Franchises are great for someone who doesn't want to figure it out on their own. But franchises are expensive, and have house rules, and have ways you can and can't do things. I started with smaller hook lifts. The Chevrolet 6500 is a great starting point for someone getting into the hooklift truck business. If you have to explain to somebody that a hooklyft truck is better than one of those Mickey Mouse trailers. I don't know if they're that swift to be in business... You're basically comparing a professional operation with an amateur operation. Every time I go the landfill those guys are problems with dumping their trailers. Not to mention many of them can't even backup Them up.
Nope! I have custom 4x4 2022 SRW RCSB 3500 Ram. $46,000 brand new. Standard rail trailer $17,000. Trucks don’t make you money. Cans do. That $100k I saved vs hook lift, I can buy 20more cans and not have to worry about discounting them for 1 day rental working twice as hard and putting more wear and tear. More cans on job sites earning $10day = easy money. I scale 14,000lbs empty with 15yrd can. 6 tons legal capacity. You are taking a big risk running a hook under CDL with limited legal capacity. You get shut down and ain’t making no money. Me I fly under the radar with my SRW + bumper pull. I have two pick ups and two trailers for less than one hook. Your hook goes down you ain’t making no money. I have redundancy. Insurance runs $8kyr for both my pick up trucks and roll off trailers. A hook lift truck would cost me $24k yr. $16k yr saved could by 3 more cans every year or a whole new trailer. Yes a hook is better in every aspect, but disagree on more profitable. Would love to discuss further in November at Keystone.
We are no where remotely even close to doing business the same way. You base you business off of how cheap you can get into the game.. while I look for the best equipment to maximize profits. We are not the same.
@@samedaydumpster Profitability = Revenue - expenses. My entry/overhead is significantly lower therefore my profitability is greater and negates your theory. I agree. That is why I did my research and bought the best truck and trailer for the job. Maybe one day I will step up to a superior hook setup, but for now I will keep my paid off equipment and continue to grow my customer base while purchasing more cans as needed. Also I have had more inquires and positive comments about my setup. Never lost a commercial or residential job because I showed up without a hook lift.
@@BackRoadBound you're pushing really close to CDL territory with that set up man. you don't have to get a huge hook lift to carry dumpsters. you could get a ram 5500 or chevy 6500 or something like that and you won't come close to needing a CDL. cost of that set up would be similar to your truck and trailer maybe add in some labor to mount and plumb the hook correctly on the truck. insurance for them probably wouldn't be nearly as bad as the heavier ones depending on who you call I guess.
Then I recommend you rewatch this video. 1. Fuel mileage. 2. Faster and more efficient. 3. Tighter spaces for deliveries.... Hell son, don't make me do all your homework, you clearly heard what you wanted to hear and didn't watch the full video with an open mind and the attitude there's actually something here to learn. The trick is to pull your rolloff trailer with the hook truck. We do double pickups/dumps/dropoffs
Plus it makes you look part time to DOT and this is a red flag. Because it is another vehicle that might. Have violations it is probability to them.

You can't drive that truck as a personal truck. My 23 f450 has more power 500hp 1200 tq. Its get 11-12mpg pulling a 20k 16 foot dump

Insurance runs $8kyr for both my pick up trucks and roll off trailers. A hook lift truck would cost me $24k yr.
$16k yr saved could by 3 more cans every year or a whole new trailer.
Yes a hook is better in every aspect, but disagree on more profitable.

We are no where remotely even close to doing business the same way. You base you business off of how cheap you can get into the game.. while I look for the best equipment to maximize profits. We are not the same.

My entry/overhead is significantly lower therefore my profitability is greater and negates your theory.

That is why I did my research and bought the best truck and trailer for the job.
Maybe one day I will step up to a superior hook setup, but for now I will keep my paid off equipment and continue to grow my customer base while purchasing more cans as needed.
Also I have had more inquires and positive comments about my setup. Never lost a commercial or residential job because I showed up without a hook lift.
@@BackRoadBound you're pushing really close to CDL territory with that set up man. you don't have to get a huge hook lift to carry dumpsters. you could get a ram 5500 or chevy 6500 or something like that and you won't come close to needing a CDL. cost of that set up would be similar to your truck and trailer maybe add in some labor to mount and plumb the hook correctly on the truck. insurance for them probably wouldn't be nearly as bad as the heavier ones depending on who you call I guess.
Okay..going to be honest here..all I heard was- "Spend $200k on a hooklift truck and you can screw your customers by charging them more". Yeah, no.
Then I recommend you rewatch this video. 1. Fuel mileage. 2. Faster and more efficient. 3. Tighter spaces for deliveries.... Hell son, don't make me do all your homework, you clearly heard what you wanted to hear and didn't watch the full video with an open mind and the attitude there's actually something here to learn. That's disappointing after all the hard work I put into these videos, that you still can't see the free help I'm trying to share.
No profit on anything tell all equipment is paid off.

@@samedaydumpster why would they there not going to have a bunch of pick up trucks and trailers. It is something you start out with. A cab a chassis whether hook or cable is the way to go but not worth the investment untill you know whether you can make a go of it. Just saying 😉
Hello guys another reason i🥲why is better to buy a hook lift truck is because not to many guys know how to back up a trailer properly. And almost everybody can back up a truck, so you ending up having more options of who to hired. 👌
