I had a Volvo S70 -99 that had 240k on it and it was still in overall good shape, but the gearbox had been raped by the previous owner and the CV-joints needed to be replaced. The brake master cylinder was also worn out. It was too much time and money to spend on such an old car so, I just sold it instead. Now I drive a Mazda Miata -11 during the summer and a Ford Ka -11 during the winter :)

Only the diesel was French and the French were making terrible diesels at some point. In petrol versions especially in T5 it was a good car.

An Opel that is only used for suburban trips will last much longer than a Volvo that's doing a WRC course every day(hypothetical example).

+Dominik Górski You can probably pick up an 850 estate or V70 pretty much anywhere in Europe for a few hundred quid and as long as you're careful to find one with a good service history and a long-term owner and look after it it will outlast most new cars and be more reliable too. Mileage really doesn't matter, a friend of mine has an ex-police T5-R which has done well over 500,000 miles without the engine or gearbox having had to come out or come apart in a major way... The Audi-derived 5 cylinder diesel they used in the 850 TDi is almost unbreakable and phenomenally long-lived...
