Such a gorgeous and poignant episode. Easily one of the best if not the best of 2023. That line "Hate alone wasn't enough." still sticks in my head.

She did help the woman and child, if you watch that scene it shows them breathe when they appear to be frozen in the snow and she drops the gold jewellery

Yeah, this is the best episode, you didn't talk about the puppets show, but it's interesting how at the beginning Mizu was represented by the samurai, and in the end she was the wife and finally the Onryō

I think the husband betrayed her and only came back to try and reconcile when he noticed the hitman squad had been killed. The mother I think was content just selling her body to get her opium there was no reason for her to throw her daughter under the bus. If anything Mizu was her ticket to living that life with her husband. Also why I think the husband killed the mother, so she couldn't tell her side of the story.

I would have possibly agreed with you up until episode 8 when we find out that wasnt her mother at all.

@@lockekappa500 LOL yeah you must have not finished the season. I don’t want to spoil too much but trust me, go watch the rest.
      Anyway.
Your first comment is fascinating and it definitely made me think. But I want to propose a few other ideas that I came up with after sitting on it.
I realized, we never actually learn how the mother always got the money to buy her drugs.
If the mother WAS continuing to prostitute herself whilst living under Mikio’s provision, then I think your comment would be true. She would have her own income, she wouldn’t need the bounty on Mizu, therefore it was Mikio who turned her in.
But there’s also the chance that she stopped prostituting after Mizu and Mikio married, because she was able to use Mikio’s income instead. Maybe at first he wanted her to have her “medicine”, so he used to give her enough for the opium before her addiction got out of control. Or, perhaps he only gave her an amount that was intended for groceries but she abused it and spent it on extras. (Although, if she was constantly blowing through the allowance and coming home with drugs and no food, I’m pretty sure Mizu and Mikio would’ve noticed, so I think this latter idea is less likely.)
Again, assuming she wasn’t making her own income, it wasn’t until Mikio purposely didn’t give her enough for opium and told her she should stop using it that she got irritated.
So yeah, depending how she was getting her drug money this whole time, equal chance for either Mikio or the mother.
I’ve also read some comments that suggest it was both of them, and they could have teamed up behind Mizu’s back. And when Mizu ended up surviving the attack, they had an “oh shit” moment because now she realized one or both of them turned her in and she could confront them violently. Hence why they argued so adamantly that it was the other who reported her and not themself.
I find all these theories intriguing so I can’t wait to see how the future seasons will address this. Or maybe we’ll never find out who actually told on Mizu because it ultimately doesn’t matter, they both betrayed her. They stood by, passively watched the bounty hunters come for her, and left her to die.

@@laurenludovico2301 I have watched it, I purposefully said daughter to not spoil it to the person who's channel this is. Me saying daughter there doesnt change whether or not her "mother" would throw her under the bus. I said that because Mizu is her meal ticket to a good life, not that she loves her as a daughter or anything. Why would her "mother" betray Mizu if that would cause her to lose the lodging with the husband?
And the writers even go as far as allowing the mom to state her case, saying she "went back to selling herself under the bridge" and said it in such a manner that there was no deception in it. She was genuinely pleading her case. Whereas her husband they made come off as sneaky and deceptive. Plus him stabbing her mother pretty much puts the nail in the coffin. Why else would you stab the mother in that moment, he wasn't in danger you could see it was to shut the mother up.

Wanted to apologize lol, I didn't even notice this was you guys responding to me and assumed it was just someone spoiling future episodes. Strangly enough when I got this first initial response it didnt show that it was the channel response. XD

The most probable downfall of Mikio as a Samurai was his cowardice, he wanted to bolt, but felt guilty. And he was afraid of Mizu's katana proficiency. An interesting tidbid that gets overlooked, when they had their sparring, Mizu opened the top knot band mikio with the Naginata, which was a symbol of the man's honor and she dishonored him. Who at the end betrayed Mizu we will never kniw, and isn't important, important is the narrator's closing statement, how this Onryō came to be and that was Mizu's love poisoned by betrayal.
