  • Running is a simple activity that does not require a lot of equipment. So what are the basics that you need to go out on your runs? Does it need to be fancy? Does it need to be stylish? In all reality we only need 2 things as average runners to head out the door and go for that run. But do we really even need those things?

Welcome back! As a busy person, the watch is a must for me, since I squeeze in runs between my 2 jobs. I recommend checking Amazon for them- I saved $75 on my Garmin Instinct just by choosing a less popular color- that I personally love!

Two things - motivation and time

For me is 1. Running shoes. 2. Squirrels Nut Butter, Bodyglide, or a similar product. But a running watch is a nice thing. Just everybody ran by feel back in the 70s in the US, and the US had dominant distant runners (in comparison to today).

Wow! What an interesting observation! I didn't think about that. We are one of the most tech advanced countries and it hasn't necessarily helped us become better runners. Thank you for pointing this out.

Hey Justin! Long time man. Your videos haven't popped up on my YT homepage for ages, I thought you'd gone AWOL. Anyway, hope you've been able to get over the knee issues and are enjoying your running again. Pain free.
Wanted to share that I ran my first ever marathon just over a week ago (Valencia). I finished in a time of 3:21 which was much better than I was expecting. Result was a huge confidence boost. I'm still plugging away at MAF and don't see that changing anytime soon but I have started doing some higher intensity workouts like tempo runs, threshold work and hills as well.
I see you stopped heart rate training for now. I haven't watched the video yet but from what I gathered from the comments, it seems like you don't have the time to run enough to make low HR training worth it. That's fair enough. I wanted to ask if you've ever come across a paper by Giovanni Tanda regarding predicting marathon or race performance? Basically the paper concludes that the two most important metrics for predicting race times are weekly mileage and average pace over the week. Basically, you can get the same results running slower for much longer distances or by running faster for a shorter time. Very interesting read. The Tanda predictor predicted I'd finish my marathon at 3:18 and it was pretty close. I had to stop for a pee where I lost about a minutes and it was quite windy in places so it seems like the math behind it checks out.
    Anyway, happy running man! Peace!

    Hi Justin
Have you tested which gives better pace readings out of 'smart recording' cs ' every second recording' on the garmin.

Hey Justin! Great video - it's a nice reminder that running really doesn't require a ton of gear - though I am certainly guilty of acquiring lots of related stuff! LOL! Keep pushing - and please check your email!
