Do NOT Buy an Ultrawide Gaming Monitor - Here’s Why
Unfortunately 16x9 is the standard, and while 21x9 support has definitely gotten better, I can tell you after testing many different ultrawide monitors and using the 57” Neo G9 extensively that 21:9 and 32:9 ultrawide support is still not great.
Now the 57” Neo G9 is a 32:9 7680x2160 monitor, but I mostly ran it at 5120x2160 non stretched which is a true 21:9 4K ultrawide resolution, and while the picture did look amazing since it was just 4K plus more on the sides, the majority of games felt like looking through a fish bowl after falling on my head.

For me, it's about productivity. I'm going to get a 32:9 monitor for work first and gaming second. I'm fine with having the game window in 21:9 and have discord open side-by-side. It's about what you make out of it...
is it possible to have a 26 inch ultra wide and have the game on one side and a browser or something on the second section and not have the mouse just go out of the game to the browser (if i have to alt tab out to get to the other window that's perfect)? it sounds similar to your situation. but i am wondering if it hurts the gaming performance. i don't wanna buy two monitors but if ultrawide is not viable i can try. 🤔
@@ricahrdobro there is no such a thing as 26 inch ultrawide! there is only 34 inch! anything below is ancient monitor because you CAN’T FIND UW BELOW 34inch!
I’ve been playing 21:9 aspect ratio for like 6 or 7 years now and can’t think of a game that had a problem with it. Maybe I just never noticed stretching, but it all looked good to me
I don't think you noticed the stretching.
most games dont have the stretching its more a FOV setting that was wrong
I just LOVE my Ultrawide 21:9 monitor and I don"t want NEVER go back to 16:9!
Couldn't disagree more, haven't found a game without ultrawide support that isn't fixable with mods in years. Some mod makers take literally minutes for mods. 32:9 is a whole different thing, it has barely support.
The 2% of games that don't support ultrawide and 5% that don't support ultrawide cutscenes are nearly always fixable.
Mods automatically means enthusiasts only. When it will work out of the box then it will be user friendly/standard. Now it’s indeed not for everyone. (Also prices of monitors and hardware prices required to run additional pixels)
@@daniil3815 literally a 1 click fix in multiple ultrawide programs but okie
So, you are not actually disagreeing. You are aware of the lack of native support.
That only proves his point further, there's no factory/native support for it. There are tons of people who don't wanna deal with mods even if it's super easy to do on steam. And if the game especially doesn't support mods and you have to download stuff off the internet, then forget it
Is there a mod for youtube videos that does not lose out on details when you stretch it out?
hate the black bars on the sides
Have been using 21:9 screens for the last seven years without any problems.
I don't want ultra wide to be the standard, but I still want better support for it. Same with bigger vertical resolutions. just give us some better scaling options for different dimensions.
I don't mind if some games don't support it, as long as they automatically compensate with two black bars on the sides, luckily for me most of the games I've wanted to play have supported it or with the use of flawless widescreen (I recommended donating to them) so they continually support games.
But every game I've bought since getting my new gaming pc in june has supported it except for one Yakuza game (which just had) cool background wallpaper at 5120x1440.
I'm running the 49" OLED G9 and very happy with my purchase (as long as your desk can support it) any time I go back to a standard sized monitor now I feel I'm missing something, especially when you think of day to day use as well, being able to have two full sized browser windows open or way more screen real estate it video editing or your daw.
Now having said all of the above I'd much rather have a 4K 240HZ 16:9 monitor at say 32-42" if and when available.
Traded in my AW3420DW for dual 27" 4K/160hz IPS monitors (LG 27GP95R-B). Used the 21:9 for 3 years but it wasn't a must have for me and I much prefer having dual monitors over a lone one. I had tried a side/bottom/top-mounted monitor with the UW but it was very uncomfortable on the neck to focus on the other monitor. A 27" at my center-focus with a the other 27" rotated on the side in portrait mode has been a treat both for my productivity and experience in gaming (no more black bars and needing to alt-tab my game out to view the discord, etc). It was also an annoyance to have to deal with tweaking ini files / hex values to get some games to work in UW.
As a 32" 4k gamer who previously had 49" 32:9 1440p. I'm patiently waiting for the new 57" g9 too come down in price. FINALLY! a 4k SUW with that sweet sweet vertical height not just in resolution but physically too.
I think this thing is subjective. I have both "regular" 27 inch monitors and 34 inch ultrawide monitor and it's a joy to me to play lots of games on the ultrawide too. It depends on the games too but some of them look awesome on ultrawides
Hmm, So the 57in Neo G9 is my first UltraWide and the few games I have played the only one that stretching was noticeable if I am not looking for it was Stellaris of all games. So I guess maybe its just the games people play. That said, there are certainly games I am planning to play in 21x9 on the monitor (Diablo 4), but I see this as a boon, as I have the option with the Ultrawide to play anything from 32x9 all the way down to 3:2 or whatever.
Not getting an ultrawide removes any chance of that, and yes there are certainly games were you get an competitive advantage when having an Ultrawide.
I have an ultrawide and enjoy it. But you give very good arguments against it for gaming. Nice short and clear video. Another argument could be that you can run a 16:9 screen in 21:9 resolution, giving the ultrawide experience. Also ultrawides tend to be more expensive for smaller screens. Still, when it works right, and im my experience it works right for the games i play, its really enjoyable!
I tested battlebit, and if you keep the FOV the same, you will see more in ultra wide than standard widescreen. Esentially, the 16:9 centre portion of the screen will look exactly the same, but on the ultra wide, you can see wider.
32 4k oled sounds great but i just think 21:9 is better. wish there was a 38 inch 5k2k oled 240hz that would be the endgame imo
No it's 16:9.😅
Yeah Im looking around rn I got a 32" nano IPS LG and stuck between changing to 21:9 34" oled or going 42-43" oled tv instead, its sucks. 38" oled would be perfect.
Jonathan never bullied Wammu, and my 21:9 has never let me down except when trying to play Ass Creed 4, and that's a Ubisoft problem because they broke EVERYBODY'S resolution
When FINALLY are we gonna see 21:9 5120 x 2160 ultrawide gaming monitors? Is there any news about it?
Theres a 45 inch LG oled on the way, it's reportedly in production stage and hopefully arriving next year
@@zhodraa 🤩
U need a 4090 to even consider it
@@Xtremzer0 consider 5090
Gonna use my ultrawide as a secondary display and whatever 16:9 oled i end up with as primary. Tired of lack of support
So this means im gonna have some ratio issues with the lg ultragear 45?
Watching this on a 34inch ultrawide and having a good time. Games like Hollow Knight with the ultrawide mod is such a cool experience, can never go back.
21:9 support is great, no idea what the hell he is talking about, its very rare to come across a game that doesn't support it in 2023, and there are nearly always workarounds for the odd game that doesn't.
Depends on what you play. Most of my games a JP games and 99% of them dose not support 21:9
Theres a fix for everything flawless widescreen, nexusmods, ini. files, Hex editor and so on @@namegoeshere197
Awful take. Hundreds of games released every year don’t support ultrawide. Unless all you play is the same copy-pasted western shooters and open world games and racing sims, most games don’t support it
@chrz_czon Mate I have a 32:9 Samsung monitor lol, I don’t care about black bars; if anything I use my monitor more for work than gaming these days. I’m just saying the original comment about most games supporting ultrawide is entirely untrue. Over half my library doesn’t support it. The original commenter likely only plays western games, which seem to be better about supporting it
Built my first pc, with a 32:9 monitor. After about a year, I can say it's nice having the bigger screen. A lot of games look better if you minimize the screen to the basic parameters of smaller monitors, but some games look crazy in 4k super wide mode. I'm probably gonna put a 37" on top of this one, so I can see discord, and Spotify while gaming. Totally recommend getting it before you move out of your parents, cause those bills won't give you much "free-to-use money."
Looking at the G9 Oled or the LG 45in Oled
Ultrawide master race. You are missing out on the most immersive gaming experience without one hands down.
I am absolutely sick of this channel popping up in my recommend. Not been a single video of any meaningful substance from you in months.
yea its 90% click bait trash.
Really weird how he’s the display guy yet seems to hate 90% of displays lol
My biggest reason for abandoning my ultrawide soon is the difficulty with streaming. There simply is no elegant answer, either you put out a stream with black bars for normal viewers, or shrink your own screen within your ultrawide. It's a real bummer.
Have you considered running a second non wide screen in mirror mode and setting the stream to capture from the mirrored display. I’m not sure if the resolution stays the same on the mirrored display tho
Use post processing to cut to 16:9 or un-stretch to 16:9
@@nadirqgthis doesnt work because most games dont simply stretch a 16:9 image to fit into 21:9, instead it renders more fov, so if you compress("unstretch") it to 16:9 you will shrink the image horizontally which looks weird and jarring.
Just add filters to your source and trim it down to 1080p. they might miss some of the hud but you could display that with some separate sources as well. Theres def a solution. been streaming for 10 years.
there is a solution you are just to stupid to find it! i forgot the link of how to set up the ultrawide streaming but there is! and the solution is amazing!
This is just clickbait
I guess it is just the games I play because with the exception of Fallout 4, it has been that long ago since I had an issue with 21:9 aspect ratio. Every other game I have played since has been perfect at 21:9.
I’ve got £2k waiting for a 38” OLED. Just sat here, twiddling my thumbs.
Nobody covers gaming with split-display.
Most of us multiple-monitor users like to have a video and discord open on the side(s) while we play - can you talk about how that looks and function on ultrawides/super-ultrawides?
Curious about that no bezel life.
32:9 is an extreme example of ultra wide anyway. 21:9 is perfect for productivity and immersive gaming.
This is true especially if you like anime games and tekken arena-like combat then yeah it can suck most of the time
IF CONSOLE STARTS SUPPORTING THESE ASPECT RATIOS TRUSTTTT.. thatll be when getting one eill be worth it
What if you have a standard in every monitor where you can change the aspect ratio to a 16:9 or 4:3? (like the Odyssey Ark) Then even if you would have problems with 21:9 or 32:9 it doesn't really matter because you can just change the aspect ratio.
I don't see it, why go ultra wide when you can go just as wide in a 16:9 by going bigger overall and have more top and bottom.
It's about number of pixels and their location, not the size of the pixels.
Haven't had many roblems with most games, youtube has mostly been the problem. It's all wide 1080p or worse.
Fuck ultrawide, ultratall is the way. Turn a G9 vertical and be ready for no peripheral but 16k accuracy potential.

But Jonathan never met Wamuu... And that's a pic of Esidisi
😂😂😂
It' funny and sad some people think that only thing a monitor is for FPS games. Do you have any slightest idea what the heck are you doing/talking about?
Do you not even change the title
Ultrawide support is amazing and all titles run flawlessly on it (most games support it and theres fixes for it if they dont....ini. files is easier than turning your computer on so this guy is super high on bath salts)
the main issue is that until very recently, every single uw was complete poo. Alienware upped the game a bit, but most sucked.
Ok question from me why wide-screen not hitting 240 or 300 Hz for the price where I could get two 27" at 240hz for a dual monitor setup
Because you’ll be staring at bezels
Because the Bezel is smack dab in the middle of your viewpoint.
Which is why it has been single or triple for a loong time in the games that support it, you know like race sims or Combat Flight sims.
Why are all of The Display Guy's monitor takes so awful?
For work this monitors are great but yeah on games si a mix of good and mediocre depending of the Game
I havent seen a single game that doesnt support 21:9
Also ultrawide 21:9 and super ultrawide 32:9 requires much more GPU to run at the same framerate as at 16:9. So ultrawides are indeed for enthusiasts only who don’t mind spending more on monitor and hardware, and then upgrading more frequently.
if you’re talking equivalent resolution, sure. but at 1440p, which is the standard for ultrawide, you don’t need that strong of a system to run games. 4K 16:9 would be more intensive than 1440p 21:9
You need a stronger CPU and quite a bit more VRAM, and a little bit more GPU power, not as much as you think though.
I'm on a 7900XT 20GB (VRAM) and I have broken the magic 12GB that are supposedly "all you've ever need in 1440" in quite a few games. Sometimes half a gig, sometimes 1.5 gigs sometimes 2 gigs over that.
Namely, DCS, Star Citizen, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Squad and strangely enough Occupy Mars: The Game.
Now neither DCS nor Star Citizen were on their "Ultra"/Very High settings, ACC was and it was middle of the pack in a thunderstorm.
Squad? Well 30 minutes of benchmarking inside a normal game on the Narva Map, with a full server, tanks, vhicles, smokes going off etc...
Omg good I didn’t listen to this guy! I got LG 45 inch monitor and it’s amazing and cinematic. Had an LG C2 48 inch tv. 240 hz cs 120 is a huge difference.
Ultra wide is a joke. Shouldn't exist at all.
21:9 is fine and amazing, 32:9 on the other hand is bs and shouldn't even exist.
So now that the 4k 240hz qdoleds are coming, suddenly ultrawides aee not recommended. Just awhile ago they were end game monitors hihihihi
venn diagram for games that fail at uw probably overlaps with games that are just poorly made
Its great for single player but too play fps it’s not great.
Disagree it's amazing
Jeg har aldrig haft mere lyst til at slå en person, som ham dér!?!? 😂😂😊😊
I love my 21:9 screen. Slight curve, 3440x1440. Most games have this resolution at least the new ones I have purchased in the last year of ownership. Oh, Its also Q-OLED. Life is good Display Guy. Whats up?
Johnny sims lol
Welp imma 21:9 fan boi. SO THAT'S why I've been getting headaches these last couple of months!
Thanks for the medical advice! 😁
But frfr I couldn't figure out why I've been getting headaches. This literally doesn't happen when playing on my other PC with a 16:9 display. 🤔
I just hate how they’re so wide, like so wide that the ui gets spread out so far and the monitor just looks goofy and comedically long. I don’t see the benefit of having one either anyway
32:9 I 100% agree, 21:9 definitely not, you could say 21:9 is the sweet spot.
because you are a god damn morron! thats way!
Stretching is caused by high fov, easily fixable. Don't understand what his problem is.
my biggest issue with ultrawide monitors is that you pay exstra for less screen Like WTF.
At this point just buy a big tv, and set the aspect ratio to 21:9 when you game
and when you dont you have a normal tv for movie watching
He's farming for clicks. Just hit the down button and move on, lads.
You can always run mods to fix it for Ultra wides, if you're comfortable with mods😂
Ultrawides suck
