  • The film begins with the birth of Paris, and Cassandra's prophecy that he would be the cause of Troy's destruction. Paris' father, King Priam, leaves him on Mount Ida, where he is raised by the shepherd Agelaus. When he is grown (in what is known as the Judgement of Paris), he encounters the goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, who ask him to judge which of them is the most beautiful. Hera offers him power and Athena offers him victory, but he chooses Aphrodite, who promises him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world..

      Fantastic movie. IMHO a better story than ""Troy"" . The personality of Helen is well pictured as a woman of those ages. Certainly to be a beautiful woman back then meant to be often raped in her lifespan, sometimes even in the street, as many ancient authors let on. So this movie is finally fair with Helen's history: she had no other fault than being a highly desirable woman for any men. By the way there are some minor flaws.... The woman raped on the altar was Cassandra, not Helen. And Theseus did not kidnap Helen but simply "took " her at the arena while she was exercising, all naked like all teenagers back then. And since Theseus was a reknown hero, (say like a pop star of the times) it was an honiur for her to receive his sexual attention. Warning, it wasn't an evil action, just an ordinary sexual activity of those ancient times.

      That's why, on his return home, his wife Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus killed him in the bath. Greek mythology is so interesting, I love it. So many flawed characters, both mortals and gods.

    • @theflame5919
      @theflame5919 Před měsícem

      @@luizadoca210 No, you did not understand the tragedy. Pious to the Gods, who play with lives of mankind, for their sheer amusement, and men must entertain. Same tragedy for Odysseus, who glorified himself and mankind, rather then Gods, and was punished. Agamemnon did as was required of him by the Gods, and his daughter gave her self to the pyre, as the Gods demanded. This is very nuanced, as we can not view the Homeric tragedy in separation from Greek concept of piety, and the relationship between Gods and mankind. Same, is the tragedy of Achilles, and so forth. Indeed, in accordance to Greek tradition, the only purpose for existence of humanity, is entertainment of the Gods, the mortal world, being little more then theater. To that end, even the Greek Cities themselves, there designed to be a kind of a stage, so what the Gods may observe the residents.

      @madeleinereads Před měsícem

      The stories vary. Either Agamemnon sacrifices Iphigenia, or Artemis takes her away at the last moment and replaces her with an animal. In the versions where Artemis replaces Iphigenia, Artemis takes her to Tauris to become her priestess. Iphigenia does not make it to the transition of marriage, but as a priestess of Artemis and a cult heroine, she protects women as they make that transition. At the cult of Artemis at Brauron, a ritual called the “Brauronian arkteia” takes place, where girls would “play the bear” before they marry. Girls would participate in activities like running races and dancing. They also wore yellow robes that symbolize bearskins. They would then shed these robes to complete their transition.

    • @theflame5919
      @theflame5919 Před měsícem +1

      @@madeleinereads the original Homer version, does not vary. The latter Roman version, does. It can not vary, as doing that, would defeat the purpose of the plot. Agamemnon must have paid a royal price, to satisfy his claim, and Zeus nor Hera would not have otherwise. Anything less, would dishonor the Gods, as Agamemnon was required to pay the price for the weakness of his brother, Menelaus, and would in turn dishonor both Zeus and Hera, who gave lordship to house Atreus, over all of Helenes. The variation, is a later artistic interpretation, what no longer regards Greek pantheon. (Many ppl don't know this now a day, but the Iliad, and to the lesser extent Odyssey, are type of ancient Greek scripture.. not just literature)

      @Larchkty0324 Před 5 měsíci +6

      How is that the lesson? Helen didn't have the choice to wait for anyone, even in this narration. If you read the illiad you would also know that her participation isn't part of the story. She was promised by Aphrodite. She gets no choice in any of it. Not in her marriage to Menelaus not her being spirited away by Paris, as she was either taken by force or helped by Eros, as part of Aphrodite's promise. Hence why she's later found to have gone back to Sparta with Menelaus during the odyssey.
      This version is a romanticized version that even still, failed to really give Helen agency considering she was still most likely heavily influenced by Aphrodite.

    James Callis has played many amazing roles, but Menelaus is, in my opinion, his best. What an amazingly deep and complicated character! And how did he somehow make us sympathetic, in spite of all the awful things he does?
    Indeed, everyone, even Agamemnon, has a sympathetic side.
    Well, except Achilles. He's pretty one dimensional.
    The sad ass 2004 Troy had an obligatory Hollywood happy ending, with Helen and Paris surviving to start anew.
    Not this one. Virtually everyone is massacred, and Helen must follow a man she doesn't love. Even worse, he knows she doesn't love him, but takes her with him anyway because he can't stop loving her.
    The two vanish into oblivion, having survived the horror, but condemned to a life of loneliness.
    Heartbreaking and fantastic...especially for a TV miniseries!!

Not that it mattered, that guy they cast came across like a CARTOON CHARACTER! Odysseus comes off as bumbling attorney who attended law school online but couldn’t pass the bar exam. Hector is a pussy and Paris is the badass who beats the shit out of him. This HORRIBLE production has NO resemblance to do with The Iliad aside from the names of the characters and it takes place in Troy! It is free for all works of art to be interpreted by the people who indulge in them, and this is no different. If you’d like to know about another twist of the Iliad, then I suggest you read “The Firebrand” by Marion Zimmer Bradley, which i thoroughly enjoyed devouring multiple times. Once again, as the old adage goes, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. I respect your abhorrence to this movie, but my comment, if you read it again, was simply identifying my favorite poem, and thanking the person for posting the mini series. I am always grateful when someone shares anything with everyone. I was also enchanted that D’Abo and Rhys-Davis had parts in it, because I recognized them, but especially enthralled about Rhys-Davis, as he has done so much in his career, but rarely gets any attention at all.
      If I allow myself to become indignant and easily offended by little things in life, such as this movie, I could never survive this world we exist in. As it is, I choose serene happiness and deep gratitude for all I get. I wish you much warm blessings and bright happiness always.

    Well it's quite a Translation of the Story apparently taken down by the Greek Philosophers. But who really Know's how it all happened? As for this Movies Version? I'M Not Overly Convinced it was Correct in Many Ways or in the Translation of the Event's that took place in far Off Troy. During the Ten Year's of the War & Troy's Eventual Destruction once the Trojan Horse 🐴🐴 was taken into the City.
    Now mulling it Over, and just Mentally comparing it to The Film TROY, with Brad Pitt, & Sean Bean and it's Stellar Cast, Direct by Mr Wolfgang Petersen. My POV is that Thier Film was More Complete about the Actual Siege, the Sacking, & the Capture of Troy. The Epic Single Fights n Battles between the Men Opposing Each Other during the Long War.
    The Story as Homer, wrote it, Was So Much more than just the Act of Getting Helen Back for King Menelaus anyways?. No the War was So many Other widespread Issue's of Politics amongst Conflicting, Rival Nation's? That the Excuse of Helen being Taken, or Willing leaving by Herself with Paris of TROY. That was just the Spark the Greek's Used too Start the Whole Ordeal, anyways.
    In Closing this Film was Pretty Decent, the Cast was Exceptional in Some Choice's, and Poor in Other's such as Helen's Actress. She didn't Impress Me an Awful Lot in Her Over all Portrall of Helen. So that's what I'm Thinking 🤔🤔 of it? That Helen of Troy was, A Three Star's ✨✨✨ Rating, where as TROY was a Solid Four Stars ✨✨ ✨✨ in My ahh Opinion. Forgive Me if I Offended anyone 😜🙂 Out there? In Greek Mythology, it is hard to tell which out-debauches the other, humans or the multiple gods in Greek Mythology. Interestingly, the Hebrew faith, and eventually the Christian faith arrives on this scene with a "one" God who commands humans to be more like the sinless God of the Bible and the prophets that proclaim this entirely different religion.

      @@nityathedoremon7128 Faith is built from hardships. New faiths are often different from established faiths. It is humanity's urge to make sense of hardships. It is also true that the development of organized faiths take a long time, last a long time, and fade away after a long time. You mistake my comment for something more than it was. I observed that "singular" God faiths arose out of this plethora of Gods and Godesses. Humans will never be completely godless. So what we know about the past and faith, will be added to. Unless we kill each other off first.

    Civil war among Greek cities! Troj was Greek city, people speaking Greeks and having Greek culture,Gods and language with Greeks!

    • @Aspasia2929
      @Aspasia2929 Před 9 měsíci

      Troy was NOT located in what is now the country of Greece, it was located in present day Turkey, which is why ships were needed to get there. When Homer wrote “The Iliad” Greece was a collection of CITY STATES that were self governing independent countries and spoke different dialects. Most scholars believe Troy was an historic location where an actual conflict took place; however, “The Iliad” is a fictionalized version of the events. This war didn’t start because a weak, selfish boy named Paris was asked to settle a conflict between Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite, who are three MYTHOLOGICAL goddesses. BTW… this movie is a BADLY FICTIONALIZED version of “The Iliad”.

Or tell me if opinions, estimations and beliefs are facts of history! Why should I believe an opinion? I want a proof! The arheologists could find what civilisation existed there, the language, the religion or whatever else. So what they found that proves that iliad was a myth?

    This was far more accurate than the movie "Troy." They did screw a few points up, such as the absence of Castor the mortal brother of Helen and Clytemnestra. A similar thing happened with the Clash of the Titans movies. The 1982 original is the far more accurate version than the more recent movie.

      But most adaptations omit Helen's contempt for Paris and her desire to return to Menelaus. The Trojan prince's weaknesses and cowardice made her regret her choice (Afrodire's spell on her) was wearing off and Helen's passion for Paris was fading.
