So since day one my Zoom H1 plastic tripod threads have been stripped, but there was still couple threads left which allowed me to still use it on top of my DSLR or on a mini tripod. But after years of unscrewing and screwing in stuff, it has completely stripped out the socket.
I have NO idea why Zoom would cheap out by putting in a plastic tripod thread. How much would it cost more? A few cents?
Anyways I solved it by drilled out the old plastic socket and screwing in a 3/8" to 1/4"-20 thread from a tripod collar and then using 5-minute epoxy to permanently secure it to the Zoom H1 chassis. Trust me, it's not going to come out now.

Pretty simple and easy fix, but just be careful. I'm not responsible for any damages to your own Zoom H1.

And something that the company could easily implement.

Thank you so much. 🌟 I had been thinking about doing this for a long time, just wasn't sure if the plastic case would withstand the pressure during the modification. Thank you for the inspiration and confirmation that it is possible. Every Zoom user should change it sooner or later 👍 👍 👍

So glad I could help!! I'm upset at Zoom for their new H1 model to still retain the plastic threads for the tripod mount. They could have and for very cheaply add metal mounts and prevent them from stripping. I don't understand. Tascam's microphone recorders have metal mounts for example and they don't cost anymore. Come on Zoom!!!

@@maximburgart Its really frustrating. Makes no sense to me. Yeah its not an heavy item, but man plastic wears. Maybe their composition of plastic is better than the previous model where it doesn't strip out but still...come on.

It's bonkers its meant to be carried around and they made it of burnt pancakes. Mine also lost the thread, plus I managed to break the top bit of bundled tripod in literally minutes. Applied your fix (thanks for the tip) and even during that it shed few extra bits of mystery plastic. Welp, if it starts desintegrating further I'll just fill it to the brim with epoxy or something.

Glad I was able to help. Mine's been holding up pretty well. I actually had to repair mine because the super glue didn't hold so I used 2 part epoxy. It doesn't move now! It still baffles me why Zoom wont use metal screw mount. Next time, I'll get a Tascam because at least theirs have metal threads.

Thanks so much for this video! I got the same problem and I’ll try to fix it the same way you did. Thanks again!

You're welcome! Glad it helped. No idea why they made these plastic. I think the new version H1n still has a plastic tripod thread. Hopefully its not so brittle like the original one.

I got the same issue but instead of doing all of this i've decided to mount it on a shockmount still, great improvement! they should make them all with metal threads

Hello, which product did you buy?

Karl Max Weber it's just a generic one i found on "MercadoLibre", basically a South American Ebay

Yeah shockmount works as well. But I often like using the tripod socket instead for certain positions. I have no idea why they made this will plastic threads. All their other microphone recorders are metal threads! They couldn't spend 20 cents extra to use metal threads? I would have gladly paid extra $1.

Yeah! Worked out so much better than I thought. Now I gotta order a new screw for my 70-200's tripod collar hehe.

Hello, I ordered a screw adapter from 1/4 to 3/8. But it is quite bigger for H1 hole. Should I expand the hole with fire and etc? Product that I have is this: www.amazon.de/gp/product/B008C7DTKG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    • @nerwin
      @nerwin  Před 6 lety

I drilled out the hole just big enough for the screw adapter to fit in. I also epoxied it to the plastic of the H1. This worked for me.

any movement at all ruins the audio, even if you're not handling it. It's seriously the worst possible housing for a microphone concievable.
