Kleiman made a chess move. He put out false reports saying they wanted Clingon to boost his value for other teams to pick him over Edey. The whole plan was to draft Edey he even said that they been in contact with Zach since last year. Now Memphis has real weapons and will gove teams problems with their size, athleticism, and defense

Yeah Z arguably brings more to the table already than most of the FA 5’s that we could afford and also would have been interested in playing in Memphis.
Brandon Brantley at Purdue said Edey was the strongest player he’s ever coached. That is saying a lot considering who he has coached.
When you talk about fit for a pick, couldn't be a better fit. And these days the NBA top talent are mostly bigs, so having a 7'4" to battle with Wemby Jokic etc is very needed.

I'm not a grizzlies fan, but I'm going to be watching them next season. Even at 9, they got a steal.
100% Edey is a NBA ready prospect and Memphis will be a playoff team next year. Still 2 depth picks in round 2, Ja should be fully recovered from his surgery. This are looking up again in Memphis.

Edey is a bigger and as jarring a screener as Steven Adams, a stronger offensive threat from a postup like Shaq and high screen and roll like a Malone. Great insight on his Purdue defense by Kleinman. Note also he had to pace himself in order to play entire games in the NCAA and masterful that uconn stratgey made him run and gassed him in the championships. He will be much more aggressive with rest in the nba. My only concern is how 300lbs will affect those knees over a long nba season.
This is spot on. I'm a Purdue fan so I've watched him a lot. Purdue coached him specifically to reserve his energy and avoid fouls on defense, so you hardly ever saw him go all out.
He definitely went all out in that champ game, I think he just didn't want to leave anything on the table. He was an absolute monster the first 15 minutes or so. But he kinda gassed himself.
If he's not the sole focus and is not playing the entire game, you will see another side of him defensively for sure.
I like the pick, Zach is a hell of a player and especially with Wemby in the west his size will pay off in the long hall

Huge Boiler Fan, just became a Grizzlie fan overnight. You’re getting a really great person who made such tremendous strides in his 4 years in college. When he first arrived on campus, the guys thought he couldn’t play at their level- and they were right. He wasn’t ready. But he just listened to the coaching without an ego and wanted to improve day in and day out. By the time he left, he was the greatest college player in a generation. And he’s only played organized ball for 7 seasons, he still has plenty of room to improve! Best of luck, you guys got a steal at #9!!!!

Edey would look at Painter every time he was called for a foul. I’ve always said that he’d been taught to never foul! He was always told not to shoot jumps and 3’s also.

Only issue with this guy is that he can’t guard outside the paint and won’t be playable in playoffs. I hope he can improve his athleticism, if he does then this team will be set
I think the Purdue system and eith what he was asked to do didn't show his full ability in space. He has real potential to be able to be manageable in space but at 7'4 what can you really expect out on the perimeter? Wembanyama isn't the standard but the outlier.

He did! Edey also didn't look tired in the championship game where Clingan looked winded most of the game.
You could build a team to use what he has in college. He has no demonstrated ability to effectively move laterally and on defense his hand speed/movement is not good. Elite guards/wings will cut him up.
Edey graded well in all categories, especially in the area of 3pt shooting.
@@Eagle8 Yeah, 3pt shooting is his strength. If he is out there he is out of position. He's a fine person, but a slow big man with two moves close in.

This was a wasted pick. Zack Edey had no fast break points last year at Purdue. How is he going to play with Ja Morant, who symbolizes nothing but speed? Upside, Mark Eaton, downside, Chuck Nevitt😬
Steven Adams wasn't making a lot of baskets off of fast breaks, either, and the Grizzlies still did well.
Edey is still better than an aging Steven Adams.

How is it a "terrible pick" for a team in need of a big man to take a flyer on a big man who also just so happens to be a back to back consensus National Player of the Year??
