  • Another huge rabbit hole amateur snooker players go down is about the grip.
    It's very unlikely you are missing because of your grip. Really unlikely.
    I show here that if you hit the correct spots they will go in!

    I was waiting for the Higgins dropped finger (5 mins in) but the Davis, the Hendry, the O'Doherty and the Harold (with bonus chin plaster) were all welcome additions.
    And yes, I'd have loved to have been as good as Dave Harold. I was good enough to make the occasional century, not good enough to make enough of the elusive buggers!
    Keep up the good work, fella.

    I’ve finally got it. It really is as you say.. just hit the correct part of the white. I changed completely to looking at that point on the white as I strike as opposed to looking at the object ball. Everything is going in. Turns out my aim was correct all along.. I must’ve have been moving the cue off the impact point when looking at the object ball. Trust your line! Keep up what you’re doing.. you’re alright, y’know

    At the end of the day, it's the aiming being good that matters, as you say, you don't need to be a great cueist - and that is where a lot of eager beginners/novices are going very wrong.
    I think a video explaining in detail what "trace of left/right, then *pick your height"* means would be great for a beginner to know.
    This is a key concept that I've noticed that you repeat in your practice routine videos, and coming from someone who has seen coaches and talks to people at club level about how to play, technique & all that, and no one else has talked about this approach to aiming, I certainly didn't play like that before seeing your videos and I think that very very few club level players actually do it. At club level, it's basically an echochamber for poor advice, as all the people giving the advice aren't very good themselves, as you say.
    The way you explain that you look for what side of middle you want to hit (based on the cut being left or right), then how high on the cue ball with that trace is required to get the desired outcome. A video explaining this from your perspective in detail with different examples would be massively helpful, I think, and would make people realise that they are approaching the game in the wrong way. It made me realise that. I'm happy to say I'm out of the circle of death and improving week to week.

    Not surprised at all. Pros change their grip all the time according to what shot they play. Same with stance. Sometimes they have no choice and they have to like it or not. Sometimes they are all over that table to even get to a ball. Short bridge sometimes long. They all change and adapt and adjust all the time. They have to.

    It's been a long time since playing snooker, now it's like part of me but still a mystery and the only reason is self-taught
    Really faced many ups and downs, everything changed pretty fast but only the game was improving pretty slowly
    And the sad part is, I'm still fighting 😂
    Really don't know where it will take me but my advice to every snooker lover..if you are passionate and you are thinking of being a pro without COACHING or MENTORING...

    On the lesson i had with you, you mentioned the reason i was missing so much (despite being polite enough to not say lack of talent!) was down to me not holding the cue close enough to my chest which therefore meant that as i went through to complete the shot it was never consistent so i would miss often. Not once did you say grip, stance or bridge hand, you just helped me focus on aiming which is ultimately what was needed. I do need to work on that holding the cue to my chest part though as if im not being consistent each time when i strike the ball then ill ruin the aiming that i have done.

      Yes. Thank you.
      The only way you will improve and be consistent is having most of your focus on aiming. 👍

    Love the way you've featured specific people! Dave Harold, what a player, you could watch him get down on a shot and you'd grown a beard by the time he hit the cueball! (Having said that, Rod Lawler took one look at him and thought 'bloody hell Dave, why so quick?!') Actually it'd be great to see you replicate other players' cue actions to show what effect that has (or doesn't have) on whether you pot the ball or not...

    So, aiming and sighting are the most important thing. in my case I have been playing for 18 years and due to unknow reason in the past 5 years I found my left eye has become more dominant compared with past years. I'm a right handed player, and now I can't easily pot any ball that requires 1/2 or 3/4 or 1/4 cueball contact if the pocket on the left side to my face and always missing them 1 to 2 inches before the left jaw of the pocket. I'm trying to find a solution or coach but I'm from Iraq and obsessed with game and snooker is not popular here nor do we have experts in this game in Iraq. Any advise or recommendation to be done to overcome my issue would be much appreciated.

      This is exactly what I told you in our sessions. I’ve said over and over on my channel that repeatability is what you’re searching for.
      The point of the video is that it doesn’t matter what it is, as long as you can repeat it.
      There are “coaches” out there that would tell you a tighter grip is wrong. You have found something you are comfortable with, now you can refocus on what’s important. Aiming. 👍

  • @artg9418
    @artg9418 Před měsícem

    You missed one of my grips... I hold my cue further back than you do so I can feel the flat bit against my fingers, but for some shots (usually when I am playing with top) my last 2 fingers are off the butt and I am almost cupping the butt against my palm. I find I can generate a lot more top spin when I do this.

    • @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching
      @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching  Před měsícem

      It won’t be the grip that’s creating more spin.
      More top spin means you’ve hit harder and higher. You could create the same outcome with a different grip.
      On saying that if you’re happy keep doing it. 👍

    • @artg9418
      @artg9418 Před měsícem

      @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching yeah it works for me so no point changing it.... I find the hardest thing is to maintain consistency really. If I am lucky I play 10 frames a week otherwise it is 4 or sometimes none. One day I can pot the balls off the lampshade and get a 40+ break, other times I struggle to get into double figures. I know what stance and grip works for me, and how to strike the ball, but sometimes as an amateur only playing a handful of games it is so easy to forget and you have to remind yourself... at 56yr old my concentration ain't what it used to be 🤣

    • @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching
      @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching  Před měsícem

      If you’re only making 40+ breaks your aiming won’t be as good as you think. If you are repeating your cue action to a decent level you would be scoring heavier even playing 10 frames a week. 👍

    • @artg9418
      @artg9418 Před 29 dny

      @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching I know you're right, my game is improving slowly but am struggling with a retinopathy in my dominant eye since the beginning of the year - makes everything smaller. My highest break is 56, and only ever achieved a 42 in a match so getting more regular 20, 30 and 40 plus breaks is doing it for me... my problem is not always getting the positional side right if I were to break it down, but I am being more consistent, and pushing myself to break to 50 barrier soon 🤣

    Apparently i was the one who commented about the grip and got butchered for 16 minutes 💔😂
    No hard feelings tho lol
    What i meant about the grip is not a certain way or using a certain fingers or anything like that. I meant the coordination of muscles through out the whole movement and more importantly the consistency. If you get stiff or twitch you miss. Your ability to be consistent is the talent not every one can get . And if it was that simple this means every one can get a world ranking and be pro.

    • @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching
      @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching  Před měsícem +3

      I’m very well thank you.
      No hard feelings. 😃
      It’s all about repeatability. Thats it. Nothing else matters. There are grips that help with power/spin but the world number 1 at the moment (Mark Allen) has a grip that restricts his ability to use a lot of power/spin. Snooker is a game of feel, without a grip you’re comfortable with you cannot develop the feel you need to improve.
      Forget about the nonsense and play.

    This is great that you can still play using different grip techniques. Isnt it only possible for you tho because youre a pro? I mean , im guessing all pros or even top end players could do it. Like if you can drive a car or ride a bike you can most likely still do it with one hand but its not advisable. When teaching them wouldn’t you tell them to hold the wheel/handles with both hands in a particular way? The same way you would surely advise/guide a total beginner at snooker to use a certain grip on the butt of the cue? I mean if they are continuing missing through a poor delivery as opposed to sighting. .

      The physics are the same for pros and beginners. It’s not magic.
      The message is to find your way. The big mistake amateurs make is assuming they are good at aiming. They aren’t. They’re really bad if I’m honest.
      It’s the first thing you need to get right or the doom loop of searching for this magical perfect technique will never end.

      @@MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching ‘its the first thing you need to get right’ .. now there is a golden nugget to work on. I guess it seems obvious but as you say most people (coaches inc ) focus on action/grip/legs etc. aiming/sighting right has to be number 1. Cuing and position is no good if you’re aiming in the wrong direction. Lol. Back to basics for me. .. I do get a really good feeling at times when im down on the shot that im in good line. Its hard to explain but its just a feel good thing. If i do miss on these occasions it’s by fractions. Alas most of the time when down i get that ‘is that about right?’ - not filled with confidence feeling. Clearly im not behind the shot sighting them consistently enough. Its frustrating for sure. I’ll keep trying but all this aiming business needs to be addressed more and where most people (me) are going wrong. 👍Cheers mate.

    This is fine when you are in your thirties. Wait until you are in your sixties and see what happens if you start gripping the cue too tightly! The two smaller fingers of your right hand lock together in a bent position and lift the cue off your left hand. And you definitely don't want to dangle any fingers and clout edge of the table.

      The correct spots to aim never change. You need to learn where these spots are straight away so you can then try to hit them. If you don’t, you could have the perfect cue action and still not improve because you are aiming incorrectly.

    It's a great video Micheal. and clearly your aim and not putting unwanted spin compensates for any weird grip choice. One aspect I don't think you touched on is the wrist motion. Even when you say you are gripping tight with 4 fingers you are still loosely moving your wrist which keeps the cue running parallel. If you had a vice like grip and weren't able to move your wrist at all would you be able to knock in long pots... possibly but not sure the average player could. What do you think?

    • @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching
      @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching  Před měsícem

      Obviously holding the cue too tightly doesn’t help but…
      The spectrum of what is too tight/loose is wider than you think. It’s super rare someone is missing because their grip is too tight or loose. You could hold the cue so tight your knuckles got white and if you hit the correct part of the cue ball on the correct line it will go in.
      The problem with a lot of this nonsense or advice on how people “should” set up/play is it’s probably not why they are missing. Focusing on grip, stance etc is distracting them from what they need to correct. Repeatability is key.
      Amateurs are really bad at aiming. Even people who make 100 breaks (which is closer to beginner than pro level) can improve on their aiming.

      @@MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching Thanks Michael. I for one have suffered from tinkering with my technique constantly and never getting to a point that I feel I can get repeatability. And then my aim suffers from the lack of repeatability in my cue action. Strangely, I watched your video and decided to change my grip slightly. Holding it very loose and pivoting on my second finger. I immediately felt more consistent and then my aim improved and potting success with it. Another strange thing, I use the spotty white because I want to hit without unwanted side and didn't realise it was a bit lighter than the other balls. Switched to the proper cue ball and was getting less deflection and potting more consistently. So the lighter spotty white was giving me more deflection.
