One of Marin Marais’ best compositions. The conversation between gamba and violin really comes through in this performance. My heart goes out to the cembalo player. That ostinato is even more tedious than the one that undergirds the Pachelbel “Canon in D”. Kudos to him for his amazing focus throughout the piece!

Finally, and thank goodness for that, classical music is in the hands of young people who do not subscribe to the bow ties, coat tails and stuffy gatherings where members of 'high society' come to show off their designer gowns and expensive jewelry. Three hard working professional musicians in casual comfortable clothing get together to make wonderful music. Fantasticus indeed.

I have listened almost all the "Sonnerie de Ste-Genevieve du Mont de Paris" available online and I found the tempo of this one just perfect. This a sonnerie which means church bells ringing. I wonder how Marin Marais played his song... with or without bells? .
I don't think this piece of music was ever accompanied by bells. The title refers to the legend of St. Genevieve, patron saint of Paris, who in the year 451 let the church bells sound in Paris to call the panicked citizens to pray in stead of fleeing when Attila the Hun and his army stood at the gates of Paris. Allegedly, the prayers made Attila leave Paris and move on to attack Orleans instead.
since this is programmatic music its purpose is to evoke its title subject without the presence of that subject. hence battle pieces don't need to be played in the midst of battle, storms needn't be played while it is stormy, and one doesn't need a fleeing deer and a hunt party in the auditorium while playing vivaldi's "autumn".
