    As a trainer, I will say this
 The situation is as tense for the trainee, as it is for the trainer. I treat everyone with respect, and I calmly give instructions. When it comes to safety, the operator’s perception is most important. If he felt like he needed to change lanes, to give the trooper room, and he missed the exit, so be it. đŸ€·đŸŸâ€â™‚ïž We can always turn around..

    • @jamespenny9482
      @jamespenny9482 Pƙed rokem +56

      Good point, the operator's perception should always trump the passenger seat occupant when it comes to snap decisions. I had an instructor tell me to go through a yellow light when we were, I don't know, 200-300 feet away at about 30 mph. I hit the brakes and we stopped easily before the intersection. I'm 100% sure he meant well, but there is definitely gonna be a judgment deficit for the one not holding the wheel.

    As a former trainer I can totally relate to this video and see it from both sides. Training a new driver is sometimes stressful and I had one student blow up on me because he felt I talked down to him and didn't show respect. I am also prior military so my tone may have been harsher than what I thought it was. We as trainers have to understand the level of stress that a new driver is feeling and both trainer and student must have a open level of communication and say exactly what's bothering them. Also, sometimes you may have a trainer where it's his or her first time in a management or trainer role and they need to be open to constructive criticism and feedback from the trainee.
    Glad you posted this video to let people know it's not always good times in the cab.

Thankfully he kept a clean truck and didn’t smoke. After the two weeks, there was a lot of fear, anxiety and learning things the hard way but 5 years later I’m still here and running for a small fleet as a O/O making a good living. I will say I’d never share a truck with anyone ever again. I don’t care who you train for, it’s not enough money, period. I've been driving for 36 years, and had minimal training in tractor trailer before being cut loose on my own.
      I started driving a straight truck for a family owned company doing local deliveries, fresh out of the army, and after 4 years of that experience, they let me practice on backing trailers in their lot. Then I started riding with a guy who had worked for them for 40 years on a dedicated route, that was out and back the same day, about 400 miles. After about 2 days, he rode while I drove, and told me what to look for, such as the usual hazards like other vehicles parked on the shoulder, speed management on downgrades ( which I already learned in a straight truck), and turning on city streets, and being aware of others around me and to read EVERY traffic sign.
      He never screamed or cussed when I did something wrong, only gave constructive criticism and advice on how to do it better.

He was not focused on the serious task at hand and was heavily distracted in a high emotion situation. That could have ended up with him getting in a serious accident. Contain it and get pulled over in a safe place and then handle the secondary issue. A lot of drivers have to learn to set their emotions aside no matter what and remember safety first. More than likely their both deprived of sleep, so that'll put'em on edge. Another thing is, even if they're 5 ways to do something and the trainer wants you to do it 1 way then that's the way you'll have to do it. If not he'll report it then all that time will for nothing. Just ride it out till your assigned your own truck, then do it your way. Sometimes you just have to be the bigger man and just grin and bear it.

I have heard first hand from drivers that got into physical altercations and even a trainer that was stabbed to death in the truck right before COVID. It was known that one of the companies I worked for would sit you down for a week or more if you asked for another trainer. After getting into a fight they tried to talk a student into getting back into the truck after putting his trainer into a rear naked choke and had to be pulled off of him by dock workers. I do not know too many truck drivers that will let themselves be talked down to like a child. They're not all bad of course but these companies know the history of a problem trainer. Great video.

    I was raised up around trucking in the 70's when my dad was a independent owner operator and things were very different. I spent many years trucking longhaul from SC to CA and back.Even owned 2 trucks and was in fleet mgmt. I thought I wanted to try being a trainer. But after doing it a few times, I quickly changed my mind. I'm a patient, easy going guy, and it takes a lot to get me frustrated. Being that I started so young and driven so many different trucks with different trannys.
    (9-18's, Duplex-Quad Macks, 3x4's,etc) I felt I had something to offer and could maybe help someone. But my last trainee was a female and pretty much made me call it quits. She was very hyper sensitive, hard headed, and the absolute worst gear grinder I've ever heard in my life.

      After 4 years experience, they had a guy who had 40 years experience train me on tractor trailer, on a dedicated account that was out and back the same day, roughly 200 miles each way. I was going to be his replacement because he was retiring and going to part time.
      After 36 years, I believe that getting straight truck experience first, goes a long way towards building up enough confidence to train for combination vehicles.

I had a female trainee who couldn't park for shit. I'd have to park for her and no matter how many times she showered she smelled. She had the nerve to complain. They told me to drop her off at a terminal. THEY GAVE HER HER OWN TRUCK. I sent them a message telling them she didn't know how to drive and they gave her the truck anyways. I tried to show her but people get it in their head they know what's best. We both had no business being in that truck together. I wasn't a trainer. I was still green.

      Jus keep in mind when u sign up to train, there's no telling who u are training. When u are a trainer, u took on a responsibility that the person u training may learn quickly or slowly or drive decent or terrible, have a good attitude or a bad attitude. Wit that being said, u signed up for all that and some so u have to be the one that's transparent and keep your cool about decisions and situations. A calm and understanding trainer will make a better learning process for a student driver, cause fusing or cusing jus gonna hardened the situation and make worse of it and me personally wouldn't want a student driver who's already discussed that he or she thinking about being gone from love ones and having issues with me as a trainer sit on their mind and clearly not learning now because of a failed communication driving me around and not having their mind on driving at this point! Bottom line, training isn't gonna b easy half the time so if u don't have patience for it jus don't train!

      @@therealunknown123. yep,and the two cases I cited were just particularly difficult. One of my students,a black lady, ended up becoming an owner-operator.

    I have also been a trainer, had one of my students (who had a criminal background, former drug user, spent time in jail) trying to get a new lease on life talk crazy to me. I pulled over in Colorado, allowed him to vent and make whatever phones calls were needed, from there instructed him to go to the bunk for the duration of the ride into Salt Lake City, Utah where he asked to be dropped off down the street from our terminal at a small truck stop. Have never seen him again but heard he was able to pick back up on his training with another mentor. I will not be disrespected in my own truck (I am an O/O and mentor). I also have a very professional edge to me as a retired U.S. Army Veteran. I am glad to learn that based on the performance review of him that I turned in, that was handed over to another trainer, that he was able to pick back up and complete his driving evaluation 12 days later. Respect goes both ways however....turning into a thug and becoming violent has no place in this industry......it is hard enough as it is. I would have called the police first, then the company....and had this gentleman removed.
