I had L3, 4 & 5 done 2.5 weeks ago and have had no problems at all! VERY important to remember, everyone is different!! I was off pain meds in four days, walking on the second day. GET UP AND WALK ASAP!!! I could go on and on but a few bullet points - 1) It is well worth it! I have had severe back pain for nearly 10 years and the past several years, could not go the night without my back and leg waking me up. Since the surgery NOT ONCE!!!! 2) Don't over do it as I was feeling great in a week and pushed too hard including tonight. I just used the snowblower to clear the driveway berm, STUPID!!! 3) I'm excited about life again in only 2.5 weeks. I only wish I had done it sooner. 4) The first three days SUCK but it gets better quickly.
I just had mine 5 days ago,I actually walked out of hospital with no help,I'm doing pretty good, but still have bowel problems,I'm already walking a mile, thanks for informing vid.
I have had my laminectomy and discectomy in Edinburgh, never needed a pillow, no modifications to the toilet seat, I was able to walk and shower the day after. The pain after surgery is nothing to worry about and the benefits of this procedure is greatly improved my life. General anesthetic and intubation is necessary
Had a Laminectomy/discectomy done a month ago, after 3 months of severe sciatica pain. Right after the surgey, the momentt i woke up, the pain had tripled in intensity and has been increasing for a month. Had a new RMI showing the root of my S1 nerve was heavily bruised, and both my L4-L5 and L5-S1 disks had degenerative discopathy. Long story short: refuse fusion/arthrodesis or laminectomy. Insist on getting a disk implant, which you WILL need sooner or later. This will save you a ton of pain and money.
I've used one of does hand extenders that many older people use to pickup stuff from the floor, used it to help me with pants, shorts and to pick anything that I've dropped on the floor. The first two days were the same as yours, but I kept remembering what they all said.. Walk, walk and walk and walk. So I'll walked every time I could. I'm at 8th day after surgery, still doing the log roll. I really feel that I could drive but wife don't let me yet. I put gas in the on the car and paid for it at gas station. Water my tomatoes and plants from the secund day. I used the walker to get on and off the shair for 2 days, then I divorced it. 8 think is true what they say, if you get use to have anything helping you around, you are limiting yourself, or your brain is. Thanks for your video and I fill your pain but the more you move the better you feel.
I had a C5-C6 discectomy fusion. Thanks for the video. It reminded me of AMAZING things I did B4 surgery. I learned self-hypnosis, which HELPED TREMENDOUSLY for the surgery and thereafter! Also, I went to see a Chinese MD who specialized in acupuncture! FABULOUS! His Chinese Medical Approach was TREMENDOUSLY HELPFUL with respect to pain mitigation post0surgery and HEALING!! Good luck, folks!!!
I appreciate your video as it provides some good pointers on what I need to do to prepare. In a few weeks I am having laminectomy and fusion on L4/5 and L5/S1. It will take about 6 months to fully heal according to my surgeon. I have a list in progress of things I will need and you have helped me in this area. Thanks so much.
My surgery is in a couple of days and I’m still nervous. But I did follow your advice on getting a raised toilet seat and I’m bringing a pillow for the ride home from the hospital. Thanks for sharing with us about your recovery

Had exact same surgery two weeks ago. Two days of oxycodone. Two pills each day. Had no issue walking. Just don’t pick up anything heavy and chill out. Relax and heal. Be super careful and once again heal.
I just had L3-L4 discectomy. 6 months of severe hip pain and inner leg numbness completely gone the moment I work up from surgery! Praise the Lord Jesus Christ! I had surgery Monday, it is Wednesday and I am still very stiff and unable to bend as I feel pain in my lower back, but it is nothing like the pain before surgery!
Harris if I were to go through this again I would only consider a neurologist surgeon that does the surgery on a very regular basis. Please seek out someone but on a better note my husband knew someone that had it leave after two years. Keeping you in prayer 🙏🏻💫
I have the same surgery back in 2015 on L2- 3. They told me I would never need anything else done. It has been a roller coaster of pain and I'm now going in for my fourth back surgery here in about a month. It has been the worst experience of my life starting the back surgeries.
Just had this sugery did ur surgical site ever get a hard lump on it as it was healing my doctors out of town and I have to wait another week and I'm concerned about it
Hello Anne, I see you posted this video more than a few years ago but I was just wondering whether you had to manage stairs post-op? I have a lot of stairs going to my bedroom. Would you advise just sleeping on the couch for say a week to avoid stairs? If that is the case I would have to have some kind of portable loo! Thanks, Jane
Getting ready for surgery December 2021. I happened upon your videos while looking at other stuff about the surgery. I can not tell you how much you have put me at ease about the whole thing. I’ve had surgeries before but this one with my back is really getting to me. I only have extreme weakness in both legs ,both feet have drop of varying degrees, I fall a lot. @@Optimus19572 hello!!! Yes, I had mine on November 18th. My presurgery pain was immediately gone. I still get some random pain,but im sure the longer recovery goes the better that will get. My nerves were pinched for so long just going to take sometime to heal. Sleeping was difficult the first week!!! But it is getting better now. The incision itches like crazy,but that is a good sign. I am still on a weight restriction for another 5 weeks,but all in all surgery was a success. I can now walk, stand and stand up stright. Before surgery I couldnt even hold my torso up. Were you able to sleep on your tummy after surgery? I had surgery 12/8/21. I have walked 1/2 mile the day of and this morning. Last night I slept on my right side and back with a pillow between my legs. However, my back is hurting this morning. Therefore, I’m trying to watch videos for suggestions. Not sleeping on the left side yet as it was the side with the sciatic pain. That pain in the buttocks is gone as is the pain in the left leg. I’m just being cautious not to sleep on that side yet. There are really no videos with sleeping position suggestions other than the back and side. Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated. Also, how long did you wear the compression stockings after surgery? Be blessed!
Wow, it’s great to see and read how good and normal you all look just days after the ‘lam!’ I’ve been trying PT and other things my pain Mgt/psyatrist MD are doing first. Just yesterday he gave me an epidural TO THE NERVE. Thank God he didn’t tell me what was going to happen lest I’d have run for the hills. I’ve had epi’s many times b4 and it’s painless, just a shot. So I’m thinking it’s going to be the same IN THE NERVE. So I’m laying there on my stomach la de da…he gives me the first numbing shot, no biggie, then I’m waiting for the last pinch and it’s over, right? Well I got I second pinch, and I said “ we done Doc?” “Almost he said.” Ok…so la de da again, then I’m wondering what’s taking so long…he’s telling the X-ray lady move it this way, turn it that way, a few more things going on back there, almost acupuncture-like in feeling, then he says “you may feel a little warmth in your butt here,” and I did, a comfortable warm feeling. Then…….seconds later………….😳😫😳…it felt like 100,000 volts of electricity running down my crotch through my leg down to my foot and I just SCREAMED DOCCCCCCCC! The SHOCK just took a second, maybe 2, lol. In my mind all I saw Rambo being tied to that bed spring as he was being tortured and they’d pull the switch to shock him…remember that scene Lol? I’m telling you it was …ELECTRIC! As soon as I screamed, and it was over, I just started involuntarily LAUGHING AND LAUGHING. I don’t know why, it was all so FAST, sooo HORRIFINGLY PAINFUL for just one second of a pain I’ve never experienced before, and I’ve been poke and prodded many many times having both knees and hips replaced, both shoulders rotator cuff surgery. I’ve had a Urologist do a procedure where he takes like 20 biopsy pcs out of your a** with this baseball bat kind of thing he shoves up there, IN the office laying on the table no sedation no nothing. I’ve experienced it all. But THIS I guess it was simply an epidural, but direct to the nerve on the L3 vertebrae disc whatever numbing the pain I was feeling from my L4/L5 spinal stenosis. In closing it WORKED, I feel NO PAIN WHATSOEVER in my leg now, no sciatic pain, no pain in my leg whatsoever! I don’t know how long this will last…I hope forever because I don’t know that I could ever do that again now knowing what it takes. I told the doctor laughingly, Thank God you didn’t tell me in advance what I was going to experience, lest I be running for the hills. Anyways it was well worth it, I feel no stenosis pain at all now…let’s just hope it lasts! Anyone else ever have this procedure done? I’d love to hear how you felt 😀
I had the same experience with the epidural steroid injection. Mine was injected into my SI joint, I have a large herniation at L5/S1 which caused bad sciatica on the right side. The pain management doctor told me I will just feel some pressure, but it was NOT just pressure 😅 it was just like how you described it, a sharp electric feeling all down my right leg. I went in with 6/10 pain and left with 9/10 pain that lasted a few hours. I couldn’t really walk the rest of the day. I still had a pain flare for almost a week. Had to have a 2nd injection 3 weeks later, that one wasn’t painful at all. I was told the first one hurt so badly because I had such bad inflammation.
How are you after your surgery? I had mine yesterday 12/8/21. Any sleeping suggestions. I’m being very cautious not to sleep on my left side as it was the injured side with sciatic pain and leg pain. Both appear to be gone when I left the hospital. It feels great this morning. However, I slept on my back and right side last night and my back hurts this morning. Great video and great information sharing. The raised toilet is huge, I’m usually constipated no matter what, but, having Decompression / Laminotomy L4-5 and L5-S1 Bilateral, I am just pooping mucus. I can fart again, all the blood has stopped showing up in my mucus poop, so I believe that I’m healing. I am celebrating my achievements every single day and I’m staying healthy, positive, happy that our bodies fight to keep us alive and we are blessed how GOD designed human body. I can’t do anything either but accept my situation 😁😂🤣 I can’t feel half of my left lower lip, both feet are numb. I had to actually force myself to some soup today after 2 days of fasting

Anne, I am 71 and my surgeon recommends a level 1 laminectomy for my spinal stenosis caused by arthritis. He say while it is not technically minimally invasive it’s close. He would make a 1 1/2 -2” incision. It sounds not as extensive as your surgery but I should would appreciate any recommendations or comments . Mike Georgetown , Texas
Mike, not sure if you have gone forward with it or not but I hope so as it is wonderful! My incision was for L3, 4 & 5 and there were two 1.5" incisions so if you are only having one done, I'm sure it will be small. My only regret is not doing it sooner! Best of luck to you.
5 days post surgery , l4 l5 laminectomy with partial disc removal. Omg most horrible pain I've ever experienced, still in major pain, heavy duty pain meds barely help. Can't wait for the pain to ease up. Uggh
I had the same surgery on 1/28/2019 today is 1/31/2019 and I'm still having the pain down the right side of my leg like it was before the surgery it may be even worse. Having a hard time walking or putting pressure on it. Still getting pins and needles in my foot toes. I know u said ur pain was gone down your leg after surgery so I'm getting real concerned. The pain is also in my right buttocks..im not sure what to do
Please contact your surgeon if you haven't. Everyone is different. Remember your nerves and muscles have to heal. No one tells you this, but this is a long recovery. I'm still very careful. I squat to pick up things, not bend. Take it slowly.I still have numbness on days I feel tired. Rest. Don't push yourself too hard. Contact your Dr.
@@anneblackwell844 thanks I did. They prescribed me a steroid pack for the inflammation and also valium cause my heart rate was high and said it would help with muscle spasms.. Yeah I was under the impression that once I had the surgery the Siactic pain down the butt and legs would be gone and from what I seen on the internet most said it was.. I was just wondering why like haven't subsided.. But like u said everyone is different and it takes time to heal.. They did tell me at the surgons office that it could take months for that pain down the legs goes away.. But yours went away right away though correct?

I wonder why yours went away immediately and mine didn't. I called over to the surgons office and they told the Dr and he said it could take months to get better and subside little by little.. Hello, ive done my surgery August 16, 2022, laminectomy l4, l5. I am worried about my future, am 35 yrs old, and am still in process of recovering, i can walk, i can do some household chores, am still avoiding to bend, twist,,,, how long should i do this? Is my energy,my strength can return back??is it possible to do biking, running, swimming? 😭 Can anyone here resumed their normal life? I miss the old me 😭😭😭

I walked with no pain on my leg and no nomnes, but I did felt like someone just hit me with a bat on my lower back, and after 8 day I'm feeling it but not as bad

Did you have a fusion as well? Im probably going to need a microdiscectomy (2 levels) and laminectomy - but dont want a fusion.

I’ve experienced it all. But THIS I guess it was simply an epidural, but direct to the nerve on the L3 vertebrae disc whatever numbing the pain I was feeling from my L4/L5 spinal stenosis. In closing it WORKED, I feel NO PAIN WHATSOEVER in my leg now, no sciatic pain, no pain in my leg whatsoever! I don’t know how long this will last…I hope forever because I don’t know that I could ever do that again now knowing what it takes. I told the doctor laughingly, Thank God you didn’t tell me in advance what I was going to experience, lest I be running for the hills. Anyways it was well worth it, I feel no stenosis pain at all now…let’s just hope it lasts!

I had the same experience with the epidural steroid injection. Mine was injected into my SI joint, I have a large herniation at L5/S1 which caused bad sciatica on the right side. The pain management doctor told me I will just feel some pressure, but it was NOT just pressure 😅 it was just like how you described it, a sharp electric feeling all down my right leg. I went in with 6/10 pain and left with 9/10 pain that lasted a few hours. I couldn’t really walk the rest of the day. I still had a pain flare for almost a week. Had to have a 2nd injection 3 weeks later, that one wasn’t painful at all. I was told the first one hurt so badly because I had such bad inflammation.

How are you after your surgery? I had mine yesterday 12/8/21. Any sleeping suggestions. I’m being very cautious not to sleep on my left side as it was the injured side with sciatic pain and leg pain. Both appear to be gone when I left the hospital. It feels great this morning. However, I slept on my back and right side last night and my back hurts this morning. Were you able to sleep on your tummy after and did you use a pillow at the waist? Any suggestions would be great. Be blessed

I found out I have a disc buldge at L5 s1 I've tried physical therapy, chiropractor, decompression exercises, deep tissue massages, medicine, etc nothing helps. I got a steroid injection 24 hours ago I'm waiting to see if it will kick in within the next week to relieve me of pain. My doc said if it helps with the pain surgery will help the pain go away. I have back pain on my left side when I sit not when I walk or stand I have no leg pain (Sciatica). Has your pain went all the way away after surgery? Also did u have leg or back pain b4 surgery or both 🤔
Great video and great information sharing. The raised toilet is huge, I’m usually constipated no matter what, but, having Decompression / Laminotomy L4-5 and L5-S1 Bilateral, I am just pooping mucus. I can fart again, all the blood has stopped showing up in my mucus poop, so I believe that I’m healing. I am celebrating my achievements every single day and I’m staying healthy, positive, happy that our bodies fight to keep us alive and we are blessed how GOD designed human body. I can’t do anything either but accept my situation 😁😂🤣 I can’t feel half of my left lower lip, both feet are numb. I had to actually force myself to some soup today after 2 days of fasting

I am 71 and my surgeon recommends a level 1 laminectomy for my spinal stenosis caused by arthritis. He say while it is not technically minimally invasive it’s close. He would make a 1 1/2 -2” incision. It sounds not as extensive as your surgery but I should would appreciate any recommendations or comments

Mike, not sure if you have gone forward with it or not but I hope so as it is wonderful! My incision was for L3, 4 & 5 and there were two 1.5" incisions so if you are only having one done, I'm sure it will be small.
My only regret is not doing it sooner! Best of luck to you.
5 days post surgery , l4 l5 laminectomy with partial disc removal. Omg most horrible pain I've ever experienced, still in major pain, heavy duty pain meds barely help. Can't wait for the pain to ease up. Uggh

I had the same surgery on 1/28/2019 today is 1/31/2019 and I'm still having the pain down the right side of my leg like it was before the surgery it may be even worse. Having a hard time walking or putting pressure on it. Still getting pins and needles in my foot toes. I know u said ur pain was gone down your leg after surgery so I'm getting real concerned. The pain is also in my right buttocks..im not sure what to do
Please contact your surgeon if you haven't. Everyone is different. Remember your nerves and muscles have to heal. No one tells you this, but this is a long recovery. I'm still very careful. I squat to pick up things, not bend. Take it slowly.I still have numbness on days I feel tired. Rest. Don't push yourself too hard. Contact your Dr.
@@anneblackwell844 thanks I did. They prescribed me a steroid pack for the inflammation and also valium cause my heart rate was high and said it would help with muscle spasms.. Yeah I was under the impression that once I had the surgery the Siactic pain down the butt and legs would be gone and from what I seen on the internet most said it was.. I was just wondering why like haven't subsided.. But like u said everyone is different and it takes time to heal.. They did tell me at the surgons office that it could take months for that pain down the legs goes away.. But yours went away right away though correct?

@@anneblackwell844 interesting yeah I still have the shooting pain down my right buttocks and then when I stand and walk I still get the tingling on my toes. I wonder why yours went away immediately and mine didn't. I called over to the surgons office and they told the Dr and he said it could take months to get better and subside little by little.. I'm just worried cause yours went away immediately and mk one didn't

Hello, ive done my surgery August 16, 2022, laminectomy l4, l5. I am worried about my future, am 35 yrs old, and am still in process of recovering, i can walk, i can do some household chores, am still avoiding to bend, twist,,,, how long should i do this? Is my energy,my strength can return back??is it possible to do biking, running, swimming? 😭 Can anyone here resumed their normal life? I miss the old me 😭😭😭

Took 6 months to end the pain down my leg. Dr said I would walk out of the hospital with no pain down my leg.......he lied!
I had the surgery a week ago and still getting the pain down my leg to the bottom of my foot. My doctor said I would have no pain afterwards either 😕
I walked with no pain on my leg and no nomnes, but I did felt like someone just hit me with a bat on my lower back, and after 8 day I'm feeling it but not as bad
