  • Zolpidem or Ambien is the most commonly prescribed sleep aid. It's been around a long time but is is safe and is it the right sleep aid for you? We will go over the most common side effects, how to appropriately take it and what are the most concerning affects that can happen that you need to be aware of. It can be a great medication for some but others it can be dangerous. Make sure you watch before going on this medication so you can be informed.
Sleep aids are just that, and aid. There are a lot of other things that you should be doing to try and get a good nights sleep other than relying on a medication. A great resource for all things sleep is found at:

lol I had the same thought. I hate to be disrespectful because this was a well-done video, but it does feel very prop-like. I work in emergency medicine, and I usually don't even wear mine at work. Much less when making CZcams videos. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and assume he's squeezing this video in, between patient assessments. :p
On the more relevant subject of Ambien: It was a God-send for me. I suffered from severe insomnia since early childhood. Even as a toddler, I suffered with horrible insomnia. Even at that age, I vividly recall torturous nights, staring at the walls and trying to sleep. As I grew older, it led to troubles ranging from poor grades to legal troubles resulting from boredom and running wild all night. Eventually this led to attempts at self-medication with alcohol and cough-syrup (fortunately I didn't have an addictive personality, so I never developed an addiction), depression and anger from the frustration over going literally days without sleeping, poor work performance, and marital troubles. Then I met a doctor who prescribed Ambien, and it literally changed my life. I've now been on it for over twenty-two years, and I've never once suffered any sort of withdrawal, despite quitting it cold-turkey for weeks at a time. (I do suffer a return of the underlying insomnia, however, as would be expected). Since starting it, my depression has completely vanished, I'm infinitely more pleasant to be around, my career has flourished, and I'm just far, far happier and more focused. I no longer view nighttime as something to be loathed. Previously, I would stare at the ceiling for hours upon hours, watching the clock tick down the hours as I got closer to the time I needed to get back up for work. It was incredibly frustrating. As I said, without Ambien I will literally go for a few days without sleeping. This drove my wife crazy, as I would just toss-and-turn, or roam. I am so, so much happier now, and I have been for two decades. I don't recommend it for everyone, but some of us really do need it.

I was diagnosed with low-grade chronic depression in 1990. I tried half a dozen anti-depressants but could not get comfortable on any of those I tried. I remarked to my psychiatrist at the time (in around 1992) that I thought I could handle the low-grade depression if I could just get a good night's sleep. He put me on 5 mg Halcyon and 10 mg Buspirone. A few years later he changed Halcyon to Ambien. I have been using 5 mg Ambien/Zolpidem and 10 mg Buspirone nightly for the last 25 years. Occasionally I will feel a need to raise the dosage for a few nights, then return back to the lower dosage. The results have been very satisfying, with no untoward side effects.

I have taken Ambien for at least 15 years. Probably started when it came out. I started off with 5mg and about 8 years ago started taking 10mg nightly. I sleep like a baby. No side affects at all that I'm aware of, no sleep walking, no problems and no issues, but great sleep. For about 15 years I consumed at least 2 or 3 large alcohol drinks maybe more every night during the evening sometimes refilling alcohol glasses. I continued taking Ambien and I noticed no problems. I quit drinking alcohol about 10 months ago cold turkey and noticed no change. I quit drinking alcohol because I thought that I got too old to drink and alcohol doesn't improve your balance and walk. Now I'm 81+ years old. Still sleep great, probably sleep better with no alcohol. I don't recommend consuming alcohol while taking Ambien, but I never had no noticeable problems. Since I quit I haven't missed consuming alcohol at all. I suggest you quit consuming Ambien and quit consuming alcohol if you realize you have a problem with Ambien and alcohol. If you have problem with Ambien like some comments below then quit taking it. I take the take the Ambien knock-off version Zolpidem 10mg because my insurance covers more of Zolpidem's cost. Good Luck to all of you. Stay healthy and sleep well. If you are up all night barking and biting folks, then adjust your consumption and contact a Sleep Medicine Doctor..

It worked but has you in that trapped cycle whatever you do. Sticking to the dose has a lessening effect and the potential of trying to increase it, rather than abusing it as such, is always there. Informative and accurate video.

I have severe insomnia, I have tried it all sleep hygiene, and other useful methods they do help. Ambien 10 mg helps me sleep 4 out of 7 days for up to 6-7 hours of sleep. I have been taking it since 2016. Yes I am addicted, I do go on short holidays without taking it. Now that I am retired. Thank God I don’t have to get up to go to work, so can sleep in. Yes I have experienced most of the side effects, except sleep walking, cause I don’t take it before I am going to sleep. Then it puts me down within 30 minutes!! So I say if you are careful and do not experience extreme side effects, this medication works.

Right now, the big concerns are tolerance, especially for the late sleep cycle dose, and waking up "foggy" which can last all morning long.
Oh the whole though the medication works well if i take it when I'm serious about going to bed, and can put down either the book or tablet once I start to feel drowsy.

So he prescribed zolpidem and told me it was something to protect my intestines and important to take every day without fail. After a year and a half I found out what it was and quit. Tapering off didn't work, because knowing I had taken a sleeping pill would prevent me from sleeping. For the past 10 months after quitting I've sleep twice a month, 2 hours or so at a time. That's extreme insomnia. I've been told it will take a total of 18 months to fully recover, If I can survive that long. Instead of sleeping I spend 8 hours or more trying to sleep, and I always feel tired and sleepy, despite an excellent vegan diet and weight training.

But this upregulates your GABA receptors as they try to maintain homeostasis. • @jukkao.parviainen8669

@@ratgreen I did not mean with my comment what are the symptoms of withdrawal: it’s more rapid heart rate, sweating palms, anxiety where to get the next prescription, a panic, disorientation. Once I was travelling and my pills ended up, at the airport I did’t know in which airport I was.
I was in three months detox in closed environment, where they give you benzodiazepines for approximately to the level that you were in zolpidem daily dose ( usually to 2500-3000 nanograms/ml of blood), then they cut you completely off from benzodiazepine and start giving other medication, which are non-addictive and drive you down from benzodiazepine to the zero level. Nearby zero the withdrawal symptoms are the worst, it’s like delirium with the alcoholics.
Zolpidem is highly dangerous as some psychiatric told me that it “hooks” like meth, even just one package 20 tablets 10 mg, and you are in the hook, because of its hypnotic and sedative sense. I have in my peak times used 120 tablets of 10 mg and still drove to the doctor to have new prescription and I was standing all right. In last 13 years I have been off completely from zolpidem about 2 yrs and two months. Now I use for the day Clonazepam, and zolpidem for the night. Additionally I use for the night Levopromazinum, which according to my information is not accepted by FDA in the U.S. for humans, only for animals. It also depresses your central nervous system but it’s not addictive. Because sometimes I just forget to take it, and if I would be addicted to that, it wouldn’t happen. I sometimes change Clonazepam to Xanax, but half life of Xanax is so much shorter that I prefer the first one. I know that in the U.S. you can have Ambien XR but it’s not available in Europe. So the half life is only 2-3 hours, and during the night I wake up and take the additional dose.

I have a long history with Ambien and it has caused me some problems with memory. I'm trying to cut my dose from 10 mg down to 5 mg. I know I'm going to have bullish nights for the next week or so. But at age 68, I can't afford to have my memory affected.

    • @brandearnofineart
      @brandearnofineart Před rokem

@@mssunshine8024 - yes I did! I started by weaning myself down to 5 and then cut them 1/2. About 5 months ago, I saw a commercial for a product called Relaxium Sleep and started to take it. The first few nights it didn’t work and I needed the Ambien, but then I noticed that I was getting tired naturally about 30 minutes after taking the Relaxium capsules. I shut off the lights and tried to sleep and I fell asleep about 10-20 later.
Since then, I also read about Pamprin maximum strength multi-symptom formula helping with sleep and it does. Some nights I take two of those and nothing else. Most nights I only take 2 Relaxium capsules. Other nights I take one of each. I do this to avoid building up a threshold and then needing more.
I made other changes too. First, I don’t get ready for bed until 1 hour before I want to sleep. Before that, I was in bed watching CZcams with my computer upwards of 3-5 hours… late into the night.
Now, I watch CZcams in the living room until 1 hour before bed. Then I take my sleeping meds and watch tv. I love getting naturally tired again.
The older you get, the harder sleeping through the night gets. I still wake up, but can fall back to sleep right away.
I’m so glad I tried. It wasn’t easy going from 10 down to 5 mg. I had very restless nights for about a week. But then 5 mg worked. But I wanted to come off entirely and thankfully did.
I hope this helps. You can do it. Just know it will be hard at first.

I hv only been taking the zolpidem for three weeks or so. Do u think not taking it is what caused the hallucination? I think I should take it tonight. However a doc told me to take 50mg benadryl tonight instead. I find that is not a good thing because i dont know if im going through withdrawal. I had to take the smaller dose like you did instead of not taking it all. Is benadryl safe? Do you know? I appreciate you

@@mssunshine8024 - I would not get off cold turkey. I think you should step down. Whatever dose you are on, take half with maybe 25 mg of the Benadryl tonight and do that for the next week. I highly recommend you going to the drugstore to buy Pamprin Multi-symptom capsules. Look on the box for the ingredient pyrilamine maleate 15 mg. It is another antihistamine that makes you sleepy.
I totally understand being afraid to go to sleep, especially if you had hallucinations. I think that won't happen tonight if you step down.
On the other hand, I've not heard of anyone being in trouble with Ambien when only on it for 3 weeks. But if it hallucinations are completely new to you, than it could be another reason to step down. Stay on the half dose with the half dose of benadryl, for about 1 week. Get the Pamprin see what happens if you take two instead of Ambien in about 1 week.
Also, if you have the funds $29.99 to buy that Relaxium Sleep (search Amazon) that may work the best.
I'm post menopausal and don't need Pamprin for it's normal use. But it does have that sleeping agent that works.
I wish you the best. Be brave, you can do it.

This is truly a very dangerous drug which people don't understand and or realize before they begin taking it ! I've always been very energetic strong and with anxiety even as a child and I basically I'm in excellent health for my age in the sixties. I have worked as a leader and in upper retail management for years and was always very successful and a recognized and rewarded by the corporation with trips etc. As a child I have always been very self-motivated and disciplined in work and goals and my supervisors recognized immediately that I didn't need any supervision for I have always been hardest on myself and on my employees striving for perfection and everything I did. My energy level is a wonderful thing but working 60-80 hrs weekly with all this responsibility kit me on edge. When I finally got to bed and trying to relax I would lay awake for hours feeling as though I had a motor running inside of me. Anyway, he prescribed Xanax and it worked beautifully. There was no side effects and I would wake up refreshed and without feeling like I was hungover or tired and dizzy as with cold medicines or Benadryl. My family doctor retired and I had to find a new doctor and nobody wanted to prescribe Xanax. So for years I didn't take anything till a few years ago. My new doctor was younger and gave me zolpidem. Work very good for a few weeks and I was taking it daily. (It was also very cheap!) I had very serious and dangerous side effects. Sleepwalking, waking up and cooking a meal and not eating it and not knowing it till the next morning with a mess, waking up 2:00 in the morning and driving to taco Bell or Burger King and making purchases at Burger King or taco Bell and not remembering or knowing any of it the next day. The worst thing is I wrecked my car in the bumper fender a couple times and I don't remember ever it ever happening! Dear god, I could have been arrested if somebody saw me that late and hit something for hit and run or whatever but nothing happened! Sometimes I would wake up and hallucinate but that only happened I think when I was drinking beer which I now know not to do. Finally when I would stop taking it, I could not sleep for the next two nights and I would hallucinate and imagine hearing things for hours when it was wearing off. There must be a safer and less dangerous drug to take with less side effects! Please offer me your professional advice and recommend something else. Also, what was the big uproar about Xanax years ago and why no one wants to prescribe it. 😱🤔 Please forgive my long-winded comments with all the details but I have always been very detailed oriented in my work and that's made me successful but now I give too many details in everyday life. Also, please overlook some of the grammar and spelling but my smartphone which I just purchased and I'm learning how to use it gives me a lot of trouble. Thanks for understanding God bless! 🤗😇💞
