Easy to read at a glance, easy to use as a GMT, its light, its durable enough for 99% of regular users and if it does get lost, broken or stolen big deal, for the cost of going to Starbucks with a friend ($20-30) you can just replace it. In my opinion the only other thing that could improve the AE-1200 is if they did a solar version.

It has often been said that this watch is the best value for money. But also in my opinion the Casio G-Shock GM5610 is even better. Yes it costs five times more at around $100 but it is far more durable and accurate due to radio controlled time keeping. And it is solar powered. Just a perfect time piece.

    • @furzkram
      @furzkram Před 2 lety +31

The pushers are INCREDIBLY hard to operate on the GW-M5610 (and all similar G-Shocks). Aside that, it needs TWO pushers to switch to world time and cycle through the modes - on the AE it's simply a repeated push of the lower right pusher. And lastly, the time zone displays above the time and doesn't scroll on the AE. In my humble opinion it's way easier to operate and more legible than any of the G-Shocks - for a fraction of the money.

Hey Dave, take a look at the Timex Command Urban.
You can set three home times (T1, T2, T3) with DST on or off individually for each of them.
Plus you can call up a fourth time zone ("World") for querying any time zone ad-hoc while cycling through the functions - which remembers the last timezone displayed.
You can make any of the three home times "the" main home time by holding down a button longer while it's being displayed.

My favorite Casio, and daily 24/7 wear watch is the G-Shock GWM5610-1, modified with a 22mm strap adapter and a Bond-style soft ballistic nylon strap. It doesn't compare well to the AE-1200 for value, except that I specifically want the solar and radio control features. However, it'll run closer to $150 after swapping out the strap and it has less total features than the AE-1200, though the ones it has are exactly what I need and I find the display easier to read.

Really love this review and the honest take on the benefits of quartz! Am I sensing a change in the air in the watch world? Teddy Baldassarre also just a vid on quartz vs mechanical where he laid out the advantages pretty bluntly. I completely agree that quartz really made timekeeping something for the masses, and it's refreshing to see it discussed so openly - I had an F91W when I was about 9 or 10. Imagine giving a 9-year a $300,000 Patek Philippe ;) Another watch to consider - at a slightly higher price point - is the G-LIDE series. I've recently picked up a GBX100 and just love it. It has a negative display but one that is larger and far more legible than the typical negatives on the rest of the Casio lineup. Even if you don't use the tide functions (which I have no use for), the rest of the basic time/stopwatch/alarm features make it a great piece.

I'm one of those "old Guys" (66 years old) who was taught back when he was young that there are 3 things you need to carry at all times when you work for someone. Those being: a pen/pencil, a pocket knife, and a watch (I know most people these days don't usually have any of those items on them, LOL). The pen/pencil for when you need to make a list/sign something/draw with/etc, the pocket knife for cutting things (naturally), and the watch because when you are being paid by the hour, you need to be able to tell when you started the job and when you finish or when the end of your shift is.
I used to wear a Casio G-Shock for a long time but didn't use the Functions and didn't really like the digital watch face. So for the last couple of years, I've just been wearing a cheap analog face Casio and that's all I need, so I'm happy with it. Now my Son has given me an Apple 8 Smart Watch to go along with the I-Phone he gave me a couple of months ago and I'm trying to get used to the Apple watch (and phone). While it does have a ton of different uses, in the end all I want is a watch that will let me know the time, which the Casio did really well. Plus, like you say, with the Casio I don't have to work about hitting the face on something and shattering it or what I may put my hand in while out in the garage nor does it have to be charged up everyday.

I have the sgw600h and absolutely love it. The worldtime feature, the dual screen, and the compass / temp all really make this such an awesome watch especially with the case design. You may like that one too! I tend to bounce between this one and my ae1200

@@quartercast definitely lean to square watches these days. I'm not a fan of timex, but their Grid and command watches have caught my eye for sheer size and squarenessssss

This is absolutely true. I am constantly thinking the same thing. I have collected watches for years, and yet the sheer functionality and geeky design (without compromising usability) makes it indispensable. I only wish it had radio control for pinpoint accuracy...but honestly: I have found it hard to wear any other watch since discovering this one. Sigh. Simply brilliant and easy to use.

I'm of the same opinion but smart watches in this day and age have blown me away the only con being they require being charged every so often.

I agree. I’m a collector too and having at least one “battle” casio is mandatory, super iconic and functional cheap watches. But on the other hand, i wear it only in situations where i can really risk breaking or losing a watch, in normal situations i just can’t leave the other ones inside the box to collect dust, those watches i’ve been after for long time, researched, saved for, can’t just be replaced by a 30$ plastic watch.

casio, seiko, they make great watches and are far cheaper than a luxury watch service cost. i have expensive watches, but mostly passed on to me. ive grown up and dont see the need for ultra expensive anymore when fitbits and your iphone will give you the most accurate time.

This watch rose to the top as being my all time favourite Casio and quite possibly my favourite watch of all time . Incredibly comfortable, has everything one would need in a watch. The AE1000W is a close second.

I have one, I've had it for so long that I've actually USED UP that 10 year battery it has and replaced it (by myself, it was actually easy). It's water-resistant, has a built in light for when it's dark, is sturdy, and has survived multiple high-intensity jobs I've been in such as warehouse associate moving boxes and maintenance technician repairing old machines, hitting it against boxes and getting it dirty.

Excellent review. The Royale is an amazing little watch that provides a lot of bang for the buck. Add to that the geek-chic look (I love the little world map) and nickname, and it's a hard piece to pass up. I love mine.

I don't know about that exact watch, but Casio is definitely greatest watch maker of all time. Can't go wrong with Casio. They offer so much for so little, a dream brand.
