I just finished watching it, and I think Ben's understanding and performance of the character is really good. In the scene where Alina kills darkling at the end, I actually wanted to rush into the screen to stop Alina, which is a pity. There is a question why everyone is discussing the original work? Is the original book any good?
From what ive heard it doesnt have the crows in them and a lot of people prefer the show over the books. Have heard people say the books are somewhat boring. But the six of crows duology is absolotely amazing and a must read for sure

The cast does know what is about, I can even recall that some of them said they read the books. And you have a script that you learn by head and then you work on embodying your character. So I pretty sure they know what there doing
