Using a tree map as a slicer is such a genius idea, here I was using the vertical slicer and using this boxes which you cannot colour as you like it. Thanks !!!
When I saw the tree map, I was like "ah Ha! Got you this time, Bas!.. Of course, I was wrong. Had to get my learning cap back on so fast!
Thanks, Bas. Never disappoints.
THIS IS SO GREAT!
1. Great idea to use the treemap in such a way âš
2. Overcomes the limitations of the slicer when trying to drill through! âš
Now we can make a "slicer" selection AND THEN drillthrough!
AMAZING! THANKS, BAS! âšđđŸâš
This is my first video from this channel. It was easy to follow and informative. Thank you!
Cool video, thanks. I've done this before, though not with the explicit purpose of replicating a Slicer, but have a couple of thoughts; the reason I've used visuals as Slicers is because they contain context to suggest what filters you want. So with your Tree Map, if you don't use that Measure to force them all the same size, it's still giving you your slicer options, but also showing you which categories are more important. The main issue I've found is that clicking in the visuals resets all the other visuals in a way that it doesn't reset a slicer, so the slicer settings are more prone to being reset by accident. More of an issue if you have multiple visuals slicing a chart, but getting your users to remember to hold down Control when they make their choices is impossible!
This is brilliant Bas. For the first time, I am seeing using treemap as a slicer. I am going to implement this ASAP. Thanks for sharing.
This is brilliant BUT why is everything useful such a workaround in Power BI? Do Microsoft actually use it themselves and realize the shortfalls in it? Maybe Microsoft could implement all your suggestions into a simple set of options!
Totally agree. The stuff Bas teaches us is great but, as he himself says, it is a lot of effort. I really appreciate his videos, though, as I think he is a great trainer.
Same feeling
In my opinion MS need to dedicate a few months if releases to just QoL changes, bug/annoyance fixes and achieving basic formatting parity with competing BI tools. Instead they will keep rolling out advanced stuff that sells licences but developers on the ground aren't really fussed about. This is a cool solution but one major problem is it won't sync across pages - only actual slicers or filters will do that.
@@christopherjohnson3755 Ah, yes, good point about the syncing across pages.
Couldn't agree more.
Woou, if that is the easy way, I cannot imagine what you do in a more processed way. IÂŽm just starting to use Power BI and I wanted to know how to change the format of the slicer to cubes as the first cases but I found in your video a more advanced format that exists. Thank you very much. IÂŽm starting to follow you.
Really like the way you show your thought process and not just the final solution, nice work!
it's like you've just shown me a really obvious thing, but also an really incredible thing at the same time that would never have thought off! mixed emotions haha superb though. subscribed!
This is just pure magic. Awesome! Thanks for sharing great content Bas.
I've spent all day building a dashboard at work, I come home, watch this and instantly want to start 'playing' again. Great channel đ
Hahah awesome, have fun!
Another great video with very useful tips and tricks. Thank you for sharing.
Brilliant! I was struggling to have colored slicer but this is simply creative. Thank you. Any chance if I can somehow wrap text in the treemap?
You always come with a new idea!! Thank you!
This is really impressive... sir you are a genius! I've never considered using other visuals as a filter in this way. Brilliant!
thanks Stephen :)
Always fantastic tips and tricks, thank you!
What a great idea!
I guess you could use a similar approach to achieve the much needed option of displaying labels from another measure?
Wow, this one just blew my mind, thanks for all the content, hopefully Microsoft updates Power BI soon
Thanks Bas, I so few days ago the trick of using the Treemap visual as a slicer but you did a very deep review of the possibilities. Thanks for sharing
thanks Mehdi! yeah we posted it originally here www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6865603835243569152 but improved the solution afterwards :)
Awesome! Very nice Idea I'll try it ! đ Thank you đ
the treemap is genius! thanks!
Thank you Bas! what you do in 20 minutes, ordinary people (like me) will use more than a day to figure this out! đ
Fantastic⊠it is curious thing is I had This exact problem a few weeks ago. (Unfortunately CZcams didnt show me the video when you published it) The way that I solved is using charticulator, which I found much easier than I though at the begging. Thanks for all your ideas!
Very innovative! Thank you!
Wow !!! Great work, thank you !!!
i just discovered your channel and thank you, sir. These are all fantastic aids as I'm new to PBI so i'm soaking everything in.
Awesome Chris! Welcome to the channel and all the best for your Power BI journey then :)
Clever solution. Iâll definitely use this!
Love the tree map solution! Great video Bas!! Wish I had seen it earlier.
Thanks Scott :)
Amazing. Thanks Bas! :) Love your videos! Extremely useful and contemplated. Much aprecated
Thanks a lot Jola :) much appreciated!
...yet another đ„. Nice work Bas. Thank You.
Excellent! Thank you
Hey Bas, love the stuff you do and this is fantastic. If I wanted to use that as a slicer I would want the selections to be the same colour is that possible with a stacked bar
Top stuff. Thank you!
Excellent! đ Thank you!
You have an amazing talent.
Thank you Bas. You are great!
Wonderful information - Thanks! Going to use that treemap with hard-coded measure value for sure!
You are welcome! :)
This is just amazing. thank you
Really creative .... Thanks!
Brilliant! Many thanks
Great, the treemap works better as a slicer than as a treemap... Thanks đđŒđđŒđđŒ
Hi Bas,
In the current version of Power BI (April 2023), using the bar chart with tabular editor fix as you have demonstrated in this great video, doesn't work smoothly anymore. Or at least, that is to say, on the report I'm applying it too. in Power BI desktop, before this addition: no issues. Afterwards and when clicking on the bar chart items, I get an error message "Something went wrong - An error occurred while rendering the report" with the option to report this issue.
It's unfortunate I can't get it to work properly because I really liked the flexibility this offered over the standard boring slicers.
excellent information!!! nice!!
Hola Bass, eres increĂble, muchas gracias por tus enseñanzas!!!!
Bas, you put out some kick-ass content!
dazzling... This is great...
A touch of genius. đ
So cool, thank you.
Great video!
Great video and a nice alternative way to display slicers. BTW, what screen recording software do you use?
This hack got me to subscribe mate !
Huge fan of your tutorials, keep up man, cheers.
Thanks a lot Thiago :)
Awesome Sir. You are great in Power BI.
This is awesome! I have no idea why I didn't think about this before! Why didn't you use a table as a slicer?
Nice trick, I have used this as well :)
YouÂŽve helped me a lot my bro thanksssssssssssssssss
absolutely brilliant
Wanted to take a few moments to share my appreciation for all your content. It's very useful and its expressed clearly, also love the thinking process you go through it to analyze possible solutions for one problem. Thanks!!
thanks Daniel, this means a lot to me! :)
Thank you for all, honestly
this is amazing. Thank your for sharing this.
You are welcome Abbas!
u are power bi visual magician
5 minutes in and this is brilliant! Amazing video and Iâm not even a third of the way in yet
:):) glad you like it Abel!
Great stuff
Hello, thank you very much for this tip. But I have a question, I was trying this in a column bar chart, but the variables that are not selected donât disappeared, they stay in a lighter color. Do you know how can I fix that?
Great video as always shame I'm stuck with pbirs so don't have external tools but still useful.
Cool video... really brilliant idea to use a tree map as a slicer
Happy to hear you like this idea đĄ:)
brilliant !!!
Hi Bas, great video! how can i use this with field parameters?
Great vĂdeo. Congrats.
Thanks a loooot! đ
Omg crazy solution with tree map, thanks Mate!
:):) you are super welcome!
Hello BAS,
Another excellent demonstration of how it is not only important to know the product but have the skills and imagination to get what we want when it does not exist by default.
Another functionality that we lose with this solution is the Sync Slicer.
I would like to challenge you to create a series of videos using the Charticulator.
Congratulations for your work.
Thanks
I love the video. Nice trickđ
Thanks Boonchai
Bas what the heck this is so sick haha thanks for sharing
great ideas come from BAS, thanks a lot
:):)
Amazing!!!
Thank you Andrew!!! đ
Bas!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Brilliant!!
thank you so much Nart! âș
This is really Bananas!!! Loved it...Good job!
Willbe possible to link to the selection "slicer" a bookmark to activate/disactivate an hided image?
Nice videos!, can i check if you are using any tool to zoom into the window while presenting? Is it post production or you can do it live, e.g. while sharing screen in a zoom meeting.
Thanks Jinghao :) the zooming, it is all post production
Hi Bas! can you please, provide your flavor for translations I know its a complex topic for actual data values, however, I'll be happy with labels and titles for visualizations.
Brilliant
Cool!
Love from Indiaâ€
I usually count categories by 'distinct' always gives 1 for the tree map size x - your bar chart solution is genius though, I'll be stealing that on Monday.
Thanks!
thanks for the support!
Thanks, can you please tell how change orientation for slicer and P IB edition 8-2022. so all formatting general is different in the video.
Guess you solved this now :)
@@HowtoPowerBI yes i did, when i saw one of your latest video. But I have a question : if i need more visuals P Bi asked to put company email or university, can i put a microsoft account ?
Good job bro đ đ đ
Thanks a lot!
When I use bar chart as a slicer - it doesn't filtering the other bar chart like slicer does.
On other barchart I have in subtitle the measure (Fx) that shows total sum. And when I change cintext by slicer - it changes in a right way. When hihglited by bar chart "like a slicer" - it doesn't.
Super, you shows how to solve a problem on tending data that make me crazy, i've tried to replicate on my case unfortunately unsuccessfully, whatever my case is not so far (many trends of analyses value in one chart and i'd like to create selection that shows one or max 2 lines). Still need to learn more of PowerBI. maybe you cna give some more support?
Bro is at different level .. He is absolute gem
thx that's really nice to hear! đđ
How did you made the category column with relation to data?
hello from Ukraine. Nice, thank you =)
What if I want to select multiple values using tree map slicer
Amazing
Glad you like it Ashok!
Hi
I have one doubt
In my dashboard have one table, one card , on slicer is there and my question is when i am selecting the slicer no need to change card only change table is it possible?, How ?.
You are genius đ
đgenius? I wish haha, just know a bit power bi đ
Wow nice đ
Thanks đ !!
Omg! I come from graphic design world and... it is ridiculous how you lack control over visuals (and fonts!) in PBI lol. I wish Adobe and Microsoft would team up on upgrading PBI's design features. You have amazing tips on how to get around that, though, it is much appreciated:)) Cheers!
