Svae and treasure this clip, since the concluding ballet is seldom performed.

It is beyond shameful that this ballet is so frequently omitted. After such a sorrowful story it really brings the humanity back to the work. The music expresses every conceivable human emotion, from excitement to sorrow to hardship to heartache to anger and finally to triumph. A worthy and important ending for the characters in question and a celebration of endurance in the face of impossible odds. I thank Nikolaus Harnoncourt for including it and giving it his signature imagination.

I couldn't agree more. After the incredible emotional trauma of the plot, the ballet is necessary as a sort of 'decompression' so that we (and the characters!) can regain our equilibrium. And unlike Les petits riens, this ballet music finds Mozart in top form. I wish they could find the lost ballet Le gelosie del seraglio that was played between the acts of Mitridate at its premiere.

@@jasonhurd4379 it really reminds me of the ancient concept of catharsis. Which certainly fits in with the Cretan setting

@@manolis.799 I hadn't thought of the ballet being a sort of catharsis, but of course you are absolutely right. Harnoncourt certainly saw it that way. He said more than once that the reason so many of Händel's concerti grossi end with a quiet minuet is to bring the listener back to a sort of emotional equilibrium after all the Sturm und Drang of the preceding movements. After all, the stated objective of a composer in the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries was to move the passions of the listener, but to have done so and then to have 'left him hanging' in a kind of heightened emotional state would have been a grave disservice to the listener, and left him unable to cope with everyday life in a civilised society.

Harnoncourt's CD version of Idomeneo on Teldec should likewise be commended for beautiful arias that are included like Arbace's "Se cola ne fati è scritto" sung by Kurt Equiluz. I have looked into MP4 versions on CZcams and this aria is nowhere to be found. Pity, as it is a touching aria whose text shows altruism at its best.
Ballet music KV 367 is an appropriate ending but owing to the entire length of the opera, some cuts have to be carried out, thus this exclusion, among others, as accessories to KV 366.
