  • NOTE: AS OF JUNE 2023, STEAM NOW "CLEANS UP AFTER YOU". THIS MEANS IT WILL NUKE THE COMPATDATA FOLDER AND THE SHADERCACHE FOLDER FOR YOU. THERE IS STILL USEFUL INFORMATION IN THIS VIDEO SO IT WILL STAY UP.
    There seems to be some confusion about non-steam games, orphaned files and folders and how the dang OTHER storage gets so full so fast.
    We're going to go over all the components that make up a non-steam game install - then we'll show you how to clean up after yourself to maximize your free space when removing these tricky installs.
    If you've been wondering why your uninstalls aren't freeing up space? This video is for you.
    DISCLAIMER: This video is intended to be introductory and will not cover every possible contingency or situation regarding Steam vs Non-Steam games. As always, deleting anything from your Deck can carry some risk which is the burden of the user. This channel is not responsible for any lost data on your part - always make backups of content before you delete anything if you're uncomfortable with what you're doing.
    If you don't have protontricks installed, do so from the Discover store app.

    What about nonsteam games installed through other launcher? Aren't the games that I have for example on epic, installed in the same id folder in the compatdata? Because then I can't just delete the whole folder because it contains other installed games and the launcher that I'd like to retain in order to not have reinstall it with every game I have there.

    One thing that ins't clear to me is : let's say I install a Gog game from its off line installer (Setup.exe) as a non Steam Game. Will it then create 2 Steam random ID's and associated folders ? (the Installer and the Game itself?)
    And follow up question can I safely delete the installer folders eventhough I want to actively play the game? like if the installer installed some dependencies (like old Direct X lets say) how can those be accessed by the Game ? (are they located in the Games folders, or in the Installer folders ?)
    Sorry for the messy question I realize its messy in my head : )
    and thanks for the tuto it was useful

      GOG games do not require a launcher at all. That's the beauty of it. I show this with Lego Pirates of the Carribean in another video. Once you have installed the "offline installer", you can remove those installation files. They are no longer required. If there are "REDIST" folders containing redistributables, you'll need to install them yourself. Then you can remove them. You really should watch the Lego Pirates video: czcams.com/video/_MlHNF-ueXg/video.html

    So now, if I remove a non-steam game from steam, Proton will delete the compatdata and shadercache folders? I think I may still see these folders in games I removed from Steam. Can you clarify if that's correct?

    • @Darkuni
      @Darkuni  Před 7 měsíci

      Only if they were installed AFTER the feature was added. If you have "old stuff" from before? It may not remove that. But anything you install NOW? Gets fully nuked. I've seen one or two one-off games that leave a little something in the compatdata folder (but it was tiny) - but so far it has proven quite reliable.

    • @Goreface69
      @Goreface69 Před 7 měsíci

      @@Darkuni Yea I literally just installed stuff this week on the new OLED but it looks like Proton/Steam doesn't nuke them after "removing non-steam game from library"; I still had to use Protontricks to find the shadercache and compdata folders and nuke those manually, that's why I'm not sure if what I'm doing seems right...

      @Darkuni The Non steam stuff is in the internal drive. So here is why I'm confused....again...it's non steam stuff only, emulators, xbplay, cloud services, etc. It doesnt work in gaming mode, it will work in desktop mode, if I hit big picture mode on desktop mode, non steam games again do not work. I have to restart and enter desktop mode and not hit big picture mode for non steam stuff to work. Steam games work no matter what. Pretty weird, I can't find a solution and I don't want to format my drive.

    This video is only partially helpful. I do not understand why you would make a tutorial type video without actually showing how to do it what you want to show/teach.
    Do not get me wrong, some of the info was useful but I really expected you to show maybe 2 games you had pre-installed that were non-steam and show us where to go and how to properly clean them from the deck.
    I'm a visual learner and retain information quicker when seeing where I need to go and what to do.. But unfortunately you didn't actually go step-by-step through the process of actually remove a game properly.. missed opportunity..
    Thanks though for some of the new bits of information..
    Question:
    Do you know of a youtuber that explain things in detail? What things mean, what they do, why you use certain things/tools/software etc.?
    These type of subjects can be new, daunting and confusing for some people.. I myself never used Linux and are used to the windows environment and most youtubers/tutorials explain things with the thought that people watching it know what they know. A lot of people making tutorials fall in that trap, they forget that these things can be completely new and that some people can not follow a long because they do not have the same knowledge as the one teaching.
    I want to learn.. I want to know how to get games working both inside and outside the steam environment. I want to learn how to clean up my files.. How to mod game that can be modded (even outside of steam with nexus for example), how to start emulating and to do other things on linux/steam deck like recording and content creation etc. but this entire linux environment is so new and different then windows it takes time to learn it.. and I'm not someone who *can* go through written guides and tutorial databases to learn something (my mind will not focus on the new material), I need visual learning(the I only need to see things once to remember) but then I get into the world where it's hard to find people that actually teach things step by step, from the beginning and explaining why they do things they do..

    • @Darkuni
      @Darkuni  Před rokem +2

      This video does assume some level of knowledge on non-steam games and the basic components. It was targeted to those that wonder why they remove a non-steam game from the Deck and ZERO free space is returned. They already have the basics of CompatData, ShaderCache - but don't realize what Steam does and does not do. I have so many videos covering the install of non-steam games, dealing with these two folders, etc. I can't go back to each subject for each and every video and cover "Proton 101" again and again. What I COULD do is offer some "pre-requisites" in the description that say "Recommended watches before this video". In this case, I would have offered up two "OTHER cleanup" videos and Proton 101. That might have helped out.
