- I've been having some fun with the Digitech Whammy on harp, but now I need to answer the question we've all been asking: can you do a dive bomb on a harp?
This video is not sponsored, and the Digitech Whammy purchase was funded by my live-stream viewers! Thank you all so much; I love you all and am genuinely so grateful for all your support!! You make fun experiments like this possible. ♡

#Harp #DiveBomb #Digitech - Hudba
I thought she was actually going to dive bomb onto a harp. And I was thinking....won't that hurt? Won't that break the harp?
Lmfao omg
Well Played Angela
harps, despite appearances, are actually quite squishy and comfortable
same lol
What's an actual "dive bomb"?
I've always wondered how Dimebag Darrell would sound if he lived in Europe in the 1800s.
😂
Damn right! He might also have a very pointy lute.
They would have burnt him at the stake for Witchcraft. (RIP Darrel)
I think about him still being around to see kids nailing his solos on CZcams.
fav comment here!
Emily is on her mission of playing the harp like a rock electric guitar.
This is true!!!!!
@@emilyharpist Maybe you could team up with the Harp Twins on their songs?
He would have been on a pirate ship playing an accordion for nips of whiskey
You're going places with this guitar pedal on a harp format, super interesting a spacey sounding
Thanks!! Haha it’s essentially what I do in every video on my channel!
@@emilyharpist well you've got my sub
I need to find someone to make a band around this idea with
@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged in the 1980s The Cocteau Twins did a lot of these sounds with Robin Guthrie's effected guitar work.
The delay and dive sounds amazingly ethereal. Love it.
it's my favorite!
It reminds me of what happens when using a tempo-synched delay effect and changing the tempo while audio is in the buffer.
yeah this was lowkey the best demo for the avalanche run that i've seen
I never knew how badly I wanted to play a harp with a distortion pedal, but now it's everything to me.
Hahaha it’s so much fun!!
"Gonna have to depress the whammy bar."
You were adopted.
This made me laugh out loud, lmao thank you
@@emilyharpist There's a trick to the whammy pedal, you can modify it with a spring under the pedal

@@poisedforduty Why on Earth would you do that?!

Okay adding a Delay after the Whammy was genius. That sounded wicked cool!!
The pedal takes practice. I spent years using my right foot for wah/expression pedals and it's second nature. If I try with my left foot I'm a total beginner.
I can’t wait to get better at it!
Amazing video. YOU are teaching Guitarist and bass players (me) MORE about the pedals than any channel I have seen out there. Thank you.
Thank you so much!!
Really glad you tried out the harmony modes, as I was super curious how that would sound with the harp! Honestly, I really liked the "wrongness"/broken-sounding nature of it, but I can see that it'd probably be best used in moderation.
Examples from 6:25 and onwards sounds like it could have been in early Periphery, Skyharbor or Night Verses! Really cool video and experiment, hope to hear something like this on a future album or guest appearance!
Such amazing playing those pitch changes with the delays are perfect!
I actually love that chorus sound, especially the deep setting. You could use it to write a soundtrack for like an under water temple level in a video game. Gorgeous playing though you're seriously making me wanna learn the instrument!
This was so fun to watch!!! I love seeing you try new things and experimenting.
Instead of doing a fluttering effect of going back and forth, what might sound badass is a slow linear dive, with no flutter. Remain Violent by WARBRINGER at about the 2:20 mark (on their music video) is really good example of this.
Yes! This is so awesome! (I believe the song you were talking about was Bulls on Parade by Rage Against the Machine)
Oh my god Phil you’re RIGHT!! THATS THE SONG!!!
We ha Rage Against the Machine, then Brass Against, is it time for Harp Against?! Only time will tell.
@@kaimietiz Harp against the machine!!!111
The Whammy Chorus is definitely giving me 80s synth vibes... in a mix of good and bad ways, haha
hahaha its so digital!!! so that makes sense!
It sounds kinda like a DX7
This is one of your cutest videos and I love the examples you played!
So watching a few videos, I am blown away by your playing and the addition of electronic elements to a classically traditional instrument. I really really would love to hear a musical project come out of this all, as I feel you have stumbled upon a new possible genre of popular music. I absolutely love the ambient sounds you are exploring
It's really interesting to me how with the whammy pedal, the sliding note sounds a lot like slowing down a record on a turn table, but the actual dive bomb on a guitar does not. It makes sense in it's way, but I still find it very interesting.
I think that's mainly because she put the whammy at the end of the signal chain, so it's pitching down the distortion sound instead of just the pitch. Typically, you would always put pitch effects at the start of the signal chain (much like a tremolo affects the pitch prior to anything external)
Emily, always breaking new ground. Bringing the wheedly wheedly whee to the harp! The world will not be the same! This would be perfect for doing that metal album with Ola Englund.
Those 'not harp friendly' sounds would be perfect for the right video game. I'm thinking of a recording being played back through a malfunctioning machine. Could be fun!
All the best to you, Russ and all of the critters!
Hey Chris!! Thanks so much. Collaboration with Ola would be amazing!! I hope you have a great weekend!!!
Love the open minded exploration of your videos, most fun indeed.
The chorus is super early 90s r&b like bel biv devoe or a Boyz II Men ballad. And I support that with the entirety of my heart ❤️
do you think cause of Emily we are gonna see a huge amount of new harp players? I bet so
I really hope so!!! That would be amazing!!! The world needs more harp players 😊
@@emilyharpist you would say that! Lol
Haha I believe that you would certainly be the person to cause this
Keep it up! You and russ rule
Harp is much more expensive and harder to carry around than other instruments like guitar or violin. This is an important factor that may deter beginners to start getting into harp in general. I dont think we going to get a ‘huge amount’ of new players in the next few years. However, it is no doubt that Emily is an essential key player that help to introduce the potential that harp can bring into modern music.
You are amazing ,just keep bringing music to the next level ,just keep making colorful sounds scapes love ya ♥️
Thanks Kenny!!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ have a great weekend!!!!!
I like the dense intervals created by the harmony modes!
love all those experiments here. nice personality, high musicality and fun to watch - who could ask for more!
Thanks so much, Eleni!!!
There were some bits and pieces in that "not very harp friendly" section that I thought actually sounded pretty cool, giving a neat dissonant effect/mood
I appreciate this experimentation - I definitely like exploring sonic spaces like this, even if it's hard to figure out what it could be used for... the dive bomb on the harp might need to be thought of in a less rock/metal way... maybe as some sort of atmospheric effect... it does have an interesting experimental sound to it.
Hey Brice!! I totally think you're right!! I was chasing after the metal dive bomb for fun, but once I really started to embrace the whammy as an ambient tool, it really started to shine!!
@@emilyharpist yea, I really loved the example you were showing of using it with the delay to bring the (classical musician moment incoming - WARNING) glissando into the loop as well. It seems to fit your aesthetic really well!
Okay Brice this is Russ - I just saw your Patreon message and listened to the song and i am dying. This is incredible. Em is at a show right now in Brooklyn (I stayed behind to edit) and I can’t wait for her to hear this
@@emilyharpist haha! Thank you very much! It was a lot of fun to play around with it - I'm glad you're enjoying it! :)
Love this!!! Sounds dope. Just found your channel and I'm excited to binge your stuff! Thanks
Welcome to the channel!!! Thanks for being here ❤️ 😊
WOW this was very cool, those effects make a harp sound so ethereal! Pretty cool experimentation.
I feel like it would be super cool to play with a harp player with all these effects in a group. The stuff you're doing (even the stuff you disliked) would be so good in some really weird ambient art rock.
Also, your septum piercing is spectacular.
I really like how you can go between notes with the Whammy with the harmony and octave stuff. Like being able to slowly move up with your foot idk kind of rad. I see how the harmony stuff doesn’t translate with polyphonic stuff, but it sounded kind of glitchy and cool, I dug that lol.
I agree!! I kind of like it but it’s hard to find a practical application for it!
@@emilyharpist Lol that didn’t even occur to me. You’re absolutely right hahah
@@emilyharpist I've got some ideas! Dunno if they're all practical, but they can be fun
- easy key changes, with atmospheric slides between them
- chord changes (keep the tonic the same but transpose the chord with the pedal - like if you're playing C major, and you want to go to A minor, play C minor and try to shift it down to A)
- slide guitar! ...slide harp?
- use a small interval and make subtle movements to get a kind of tape warble instability thing going on
- play some blues with some sweet bends (including pre-bends)
- play something, then play it an octave down but shift it back up an octave with the whammy, so it feels like you're doin nothin at all, nothin at all, nothin at all!
Honestly I feel like it might be cool to have it set to a semitone or two, just so you can throw in "slides", bends and the like for single notes and full chords here and there. Lil bit of spicy seasoning that I don't think (?) you can usually do on a harp
You’re right, the delay after it makes such an appealing glide 🌊
its too good
the delay after the whammy is really nice. plus the pedal looks rad
My cat was on my lap during the pinch squeal and dive bombing and kept looking back at me like "WHAT IS THAT?!" 🤣
Have you tried it with the bigsby after for the vibrato at the end of the dive bomb? I don’t know how good the tracking is on it and it would be a more tap dancing. Love the videos!
6:19 Reminds me a bit of Michael Hedges' tunes "Point A" and "Point B" which were played guitar with a TransTrem bridge
You took my advice and pushed up on the Bigsby Pedal! 😁😁😁 Another great video!
This is so sick haha I just got a guitar with a tremolo recently and it’s so hard to resist the urge to do divebombs all the time (tuning a floating bridge is traumatic)
Dude/ dudette, you shouldn't have to retune a floating bridge (such as a floyd rose) the strings should be locked off and they will stay in tune!
This was my favorite part of being in a live death metal band. My Ibanez S was perfect for divebombs
ZR tremolo?!? Those are wild!!!
I have no interest in harp, whacko sound effects, dive bombs, etc but I bumped into your channel about a month ago and find it really super fun to watch. I have no idea why except probably your sense of humor is similar to mine.
Good luck and I hope you continue to have fun.!
Thank you so much for the kind words!!! 🥰❤️
It happened! I'd say you got some good screaming dives out of it, though the highlight was your screaming and faces with it, truly you have become a master in a day
You should try using the Hall of Fame 2 Reverb Pedal, it has up to 80 different settings and it'll sound good with your harp playing skills! Love your videos.
Thanks! I prefer the empress reverb over the hall of fame!
Love that you're willing to try things that are so non traditional.
Thanks so much!! Honestly it’s a ton of fun!
Good job, this needed to happen! Keep up the good work. Sky is the limit!
Wow with the chorus on it reminds me so much of that 80’s keyboard synth sound used in so many songs in that era!
I really like the sound of chorus harp on shallow. You say it sounds "digital", i think it sounds like a high end Casio keyboard so basically it transforms to a different instrument. To me, a "digital" sound is when the bitrate is obvious, digital interference or like terrible horn samples
Emily can do ANYTHING on Harp!! Bow before her Might!
You played beautifully. Very soothing.
@Emily Hopkins Check out the Steve Vai song "Touching Tongues". It incorporates a whammy pedal along with a delay pedal to achieve an insanely beautiful waterfall type effect. You'll know it when you hear it. Also, I was very disappointed not to hear you attempt the guitar solo from "Killing in the name of" by Rage against the machine 😁
Fun trick: Plug in to the Right input of the Avalanche Run - Plug the Left output in to the Whammy. Now you have a full wet output channel that can be pitched by the Whammy. The Right output of the Avalanche Run will have a standard mix. Wacky stereo pitched delay madness will ensue.
WHOA okay I need to try this!!!
Talent willing to explore new audio territory = growth. Not being confined to limited standards is refreshing. Breaking new ground in any field is entertaining to the curious mind. A cutie doing the work makes it magnetically attractive!
Cool video! Feel like I'm jumping in long after you started using pedals but man is it such a neat thing. Quick note, only with "floating" tremolos can you go up in pitch, myself and a lot of people just block it off for dive only to avoid tuning stability issues. I believe the "divebomb" mode is mimicking that.
The harp with the chorus or harmonies gave big Joe Hisaishi vibes, so tranquil!
Pedal placement would help too. wah or whammy pedals generally go first in the signal chain then distortion and delay etc. You will find what works for your instrument, amp but its a good starting point. Dimebag Darrel used the whammy pedal on studio albums and live. intro to Becoming- czcams.com/video/2ht3XGhlfYs/video.html A real good lesson on dive bombing from a legend- czcams.com/video/4P6GKRJ8s6k/video.html Enjoying your videos. I can hopefully avoid peppering you w question on FB now if i watch some.
The full mix part with the dark star sounds magical.
its so good!!! anything with dark star is king
Very cool stuff! I have a Whammy pedal (it's an older model, I've had it since the 1990s). I used to use it on Hammond organ: one fun trick with that is to do the palm-down gliss where you build up to a note from the bottom of the keyboard, but simultaneously use the "2 octave down" range so the sound starts off as little more than a venue-shaking rumble and rises even more rapidly :)
I want to hear a whole composed harp song now. Honestly… I want a full band.

@@emilyharpist so good! Thanks. Now I’m on Spotify. Down the rabbit hole I go…
The harmonic transposing for chords is super wonky on the OG Whammy, more so than the modern Whammy. May even sound cool on a harp.
That’s so interesting!! I didn’t even bother looking into the older generations, everyone told me to get the 5!
@@emilyharpist The "classic" mode on the 5 is supposed to emulate the glitchiness of the original (which was only designed for single notes), so playing chords through that mode might get you in the ballpark. I use the Whammy mode on my Digitech EX-7 for similar results. Also, some pedal power supplies do have an AC out that works for those finicky Digitech pedals (I use a Truetone CS12), but yeah it is still inconvenient
@@griffinc466 oh i see!! I use the chords mode for everything on harp, classic wasn't catching everything right!
What a cool channel. I've always been fascinated with the harp! We got a Disney princess over here plucking away! Delightful!
I’ve been binge watching your videos. I feel like an explorer of peace.
Can you dive bomb on a harp? The question no one has ever asked, thus making it so that a video exploring the answer comes up as the top result when googling it.
That’s good SEO baybeee! It was a really fun experiment and I hope I can continue to push it forward haha
Thank you for keeping your socks on. I hate the internet. Good job doing the face (of course) 😁

So beautiful I love the sounds u get you have gone beyond any Harp players yer so loved you did super Emily thank u
I Love This More Than You'll Ever Know. Thank you.

Gonna have to disagree with you on one point - the detune sounds gorgeous on harp. And detune =/= chorus.
(The possibilities with the harmony modes are intriguing, too - those came out a lot better than I expected.)
The detune is essentially a vibrato mixed with the dry signal, which is essentially a chorus!!! I’d much prefer something like the Deep Oggin but it isn’t too bad!!!
The harmony modes definitely have an application!! I just have to find where and how, haha probably quickly and subtly!!
!!!
major bag alert
I love that you are using an empress distortion. I don't have one yet, but definitely in the market. I have a tight metal pro 2 distortion. empress us next. killer analog. I love your channel
Love the experimentation whether it works or not! There were some great sounds and even if you didn't achieve the metal dive bomb that you were aiming for, I really liked the effects. While you are not a guitar god, I think with practice with the whammy pedal, you could put it to good use. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you so much, Gary!!! This really made me smile 😊

Damn that was sick so beautiful so calm yet there's an entire atmosphere just exploding I think I just found some love for the harp and the artist isn't bad herself 😜
Amazing to hear with the avalanche run paired with it while seesaw back and forth with considerate timing. I loved that a lot and the dive bomb vocals hahaha you don’t need harp! Ya the harmonic pitch shifts would be guitar friendly unfortunately it doesn’t seem to shift up or track the harp well. Exploration is where the fun is and this was a lot of fun! Thanks to the live stream superchat supporters in getting the Whammy!
Joan!!! You were the first to suggest using it with a delay in the stream and it’s the BEST!! Thank you!! Exploring is the best part 😊 I’m so grateful for every super chat supporter!!! So amazing. It took me a while to perfect my whammy vocal impression lmfao
A regular harmonic on a harp looks a lot like a pinch harmonic on a guitar. You're essentially doing the same thing to the string, one handed.
true!!! the sound is a lot less squeally though :(

Whoa this was rad AF Em.
Very cooool.
Thanks!!! THALL HARP SOON
I love the fact that you have a custom neon sign that just reads "Custom Neon Sign"
Lmao it’s my favorite thing in our studio!
That's great that you could find a new Whammy! Digitech has been acquired by Cort, so I'm kind of hoping they'll re-issue some of the older pedals, including the DOD range.
Considering when the Whammy came out (it's not a new pedal by any means!), I can kind of forgive them for the power supply thing. Also Whammy isn't an intelligent pitch shifter, just fixed intervals or bends. If you wanted to do this you'd need a harmonizer. I use the TC Electronic Quintessence, which also has programmable settings and a built-in expression function on the footswitch, so can kind of emulate some of the Whammy's sounds that way.
Anyway I heard something new and cool today! Especially liked the shimmer with the reverb pedal, I thought that worked really well.
I hope cor-tek reissues the pedals soon!
4:43 - "It sounds like a baby screaming" (proceeds to make gremlin noises)
I've seen a baby once, can confirm.
Lmaoooo
These videos are so rad 😂 Subscribed 🥸
Thank you!!! Welcome to the channel :)
Cool video as always! Two notes. The whammy actually does work on 9v/400mA power, or at least mine does :) And since you have two separate pickups on the harp you could also get a bass whammy and do dive bombs to the sub harmonics while dive bombing up on the regular whammy (or the other way around) :) My fav thing with the whammy is to use it in a send/return loop or a small mixer and so the harmonics are not overwhelming but stay on top of the main melody line by mixing in thw wham to taste. Also having a recorded loop playing thru the whammy this way i just love to flip to different harmonic presets (2nds, 3rds, octave up/down).
It really depends on the Whammy version and power supply but the TrueTone CS12 works for all Whammy's. I've got my Whammy 5 running on my TrueTone CS12 on a single 500ma output. But...Whammy versions 1-4 require output 12 on that particular device because those require 9Vac. This is specifically called out in the CS12 manual.
It’s crazy that the manual says 1.2 amps, then!
That's entertaining, Emily! I love it.
Thanks Andrew!!
A truly amazing title. I am thrilled.

Thanks so much Richard!!! I really appreciate you hahaha and every donation counts!!! You’re the best :)
I’ve been looking for this video
It is all about playing with the sound. Please enjoy Looking forward to see more of your videous! You are fantastic
Thank you!!!
TBH, I loved what happened when she demoed the functions that “don’t work so well for harp.” I thought that was some cool way-out-there stuff.. Her expressiveness and musicality still translates when the key/pitch-shift stuff is happening, and the result is surprising and oddly beautiful. .This might be hyperbolic, but I feel like Miles Davis and Chick Corea would’ve really dug that. Keep experimenting, Emily, thanks for doin’ what you do! ✌🏼
i didn't manage to get that lap harp I was looking at(she decided not to sell it ;_;) but the idea I had since I can only afford a small harp was basically to run it through my POG 2 with the lower Octaves up and create this wild wall of sound.
Also one trick is to try using two pitch shifters for some wilder patterns since you can't quite move one fast enough with one foot - The Boss PS6 is pretty interesting since it's like a single touch based action rather than an expression pedal and you adjust the rise and fall time
3:38 and 5:41 were great dive bombs. I'd use industrial strength velcro to attach that Bigsby pedal to the side of the harp.
Going back to this same idea, an EHX Pitchfork with an expression pedal or a TC Electronic Brainwaves with an expression pedal will do the same type of thing as the Whammy, but both tracks the instrument very well and are really polyphonic friendly (at least when it comes to guitar chords, not sure how it would hold up on harp) worth checking into if u want to revisit pitch manipulation effects again
I gotta try that pitchfork! A lot of people are suggesting it. I didn’t know it had an expression jack!
I could listen to you play all night!
Sounds awesome.
I like the way hands move on a harp. Cool stuff happening here!
Amazing!!!! Also I laughed SO hard at the “no feet pics” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂 😂
can only go up or down on a guitar with a floyd or v trim or similar but a strat or flat trem u can only go down.thats why they would bend the neck to get a similar effect. awesome video,u have a new sub.
Neat experiment and music!
Idk if anyone's said so already but ideally the whammy should go first in the effects chain. It'll make the tone a lot clearer if the pitch is shifting before the distortion. Great video 👍
Can’t do that with harp but I’ll definitely try to do it before distortion
