  • After years of offering simplified, value-oriented, performance mountain bike forks, the Marzocchi Bomber Air rear shock is sure to please die-hard fans of the big red M. We spoke with Matt Hornland at length once we received our new shock and a shiny new Z1 fork for this video and an upcoming long term review. “The release of this shock isn’t something we took lightly,” Hornland shared, “it needed to be worthy of the Bomber name, the Bomber legacy. We wanted to develop a shock that was durable, would stand the test of time, and perform well for any rider.”
    For those who may not know, Marzocchi is owned by Fox Factory Suspension but Matt told us this isn’t just a rebranded Float X. It was all part of the effort Marzocchi’s team put into making this shock a Bomber product. Keeping true to Marzocchi’s ethos, the Bomber Air shock is designed to be a simple, user-friendly product that is affordable yet capable of handling the roughest and fastest trails you can throw its way. A quick look at the Marzocchi rider-roster and you’ll see that riders like Cam McCaul, Jaxson Riddle and Reed Boggs have been sending this shock bigger and harder than the rest of us could ever hope to.
    So far we’ve been quite pleased with the simplicity of the shock, how it changes our mindsets to just focus on the fun and ride rather than busting out the tools and notepad to endlessly tweak our suspension in search of minor improvements. This shock works, and the easy to understand dials do what they’re supposed to do. We look forward to spending more time aboard our new Marzocchi Bomber suspension as we conduct a long term review aboard our Fezzari La Sal Peak.

    As the recent owner of a merida e160 675 , with a bomber air shock , dishing out 65mm stroke , is agree with this assessment , easy to set up n forget , all I did is add a .10 token , total of .3 and shock feels good on 80% of everything I ride ,
    I have a 2023 vs bomber on another bike , and the support may be a bit better on the coil (450lb spring )
    But bottom out better on the air ..
    It's very even thru it's stroke ..
    By comparison , it's way better than my float x on a 2022 spectral 275 , with a M , M , tune n .4 token ..
    But that a horst link bike , so yer..
    Go buy a bomber air , they ain't too shabby

      I'd definitely recommend a Float X Performance Elite instead (if you can find one), as it has the climb switch and low speed compression adjustment of the Float X Factory, but is only $40 more than this Marzocchi ($80 less than a Factory).
      I feel like getting this would be like getting a Z1 over a 36 Performance Elite, if the Z1 was only $100 less than the 36 (instead of $300).

  • @echobenav8
    @echobenav8 Před 2 lety

    I put a Z1 170mm/44 on my son's Ripmo AF and I have a DVO Onyx 170mm/44 on mine. The Z1 is beefier and super easy to dial in. I'd even say it handles bigger hits better, though it lacks the finesse of having HSC and LSC. Simpler, stronger, easier and cheaper. Hard to argue with that.

    Is that compression adjuster basically a climb switch? or not?

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  Před 2 lety +1

      It could help a bit, but it is more of a firm/soft adjustment depending on if you're riding a rough and rooty trail or maybe a smoother flow line. Helps give some good and noticeable compression changes.

    I like the concept of the brand. However, I need to know about parts availability and ease of service before I buy a shock. For example I like the performance of an X2 over a Super Deluxe, but the incredible amount of special tools and complexity of basic damper service along with questionable reliability makes me choose RS SD every time (or DVO/Manitou).

    • @gpearce11
      @gpearce11 Před 2 lety

      It's basically a Float X, and I believe uses more of the same parts (including the same service kit), so that shouldn't be an issue.

      Totally agree. Not enough discount compared to Float X Perf. I'm in the market for a new shock and the Float X Perf is on the top of my list. If this bomber air shock was closer to $400 I would consider it since I have a matching Z1 air fork. I'm currently running a Suntour Tri Air on another build. Got that shock on discount for under $300 directly from SunTour USA. It's basically the same as a DVO Topaz but with an IFP instead of the DVO bladder. Actually, I was told SunTour manufacturers DVO shocks. I wonder who makes this new bomber air and whether any Fox internals are used. I will keep an eye on the Fox support page for part numbers and drawings. Fox currently has the bomber CR parts diagrams on their site. Maybe they will post the bomber air and then I can compare part numbers from Float X internals.

    looks interesting but i don't like the absence of clicks on the compression settings. I think that human beings need quantitative measurements.Even you, when you tried to describe the compression knob, have used qualitative value.You said 270 grads...

  • @robgoffroad

    The price is reasonable, but of course if you go to their website, it's out of stock. FWIW... my motorcycle has Marzocchi suspension (forks and rear shock)... the fork is decent but the rear shock is just plain awful. It's "okay" on pavement but on dirt, especially if it gets washboarded, it's completely out of its league. This is on a new Tiger 900 GT.
