  • @mzytryck

    I love this version of Lady Capulet; terrified of her husband and quick to make it clear she's on his side when Juliet first disobeys, yet instinctively tries to protect her when Capulet loses control and takes a blow for it, before finally coming to the realisation that she has neither the power nor the courage to oppose her husband for her daughter's sake, and leaves Juliet on her own even though it breaks her heart to do so.
    In this version, you can read her joy at the marriage as not only being a good social match, but also because it will get her daughter out of her husband's power and under the protection of someone who will hopefully be less explosive.

    • @goldsteinist
      @goldsteinist Před 2 lety +12

      She was sad because of Tybalt. In the book it comes off different in my opinion. She left her daughter when she needed her most.

    • @Angie2343
      @Angie2343 Před rokem +8

      Um, in the time of the ORIGINAL play, marriage was just a transfer of property. The husband became the bride's new owner, so YES, Paris would get explosive.

    • @mzytryck
      @mzytryck Před rokem +10

      @@Angie2343 Depends on his personality; if he had a dog it would also be his property, and he would feel he had the right to beat it if it defied him, but having the ability to treat disobedient dogs/servants/wives cruelly doesn't automatically mean he will.
      For Lady Capulet, Juliet having a husband who MIGHT be violently explosive could be an improvement over a father who definitely is.

    • @Angie2343
      @Angie2343 Před rokem

      @@mzytryck Trust me, I have researched marriage over the centuries, and wives were treated like SHIT.

    • @mzytryck
      @mzytryck Před rokem +8

      @@Angie2343 I'm not disputing the atrocious treatment of wives historically, (otherwise I wouldn't have compared them to owning a dog), I'm just not sure why (if I've understood you correctly) you seem to be taking issue with my original comment referring to Paris as "someone who will hopefully be less explosive."
      At no point did I suggest Lady Capulet was hoping Paris would be the ideal husband by today's standards, only that, when she knows for a fact that Juliet's father violently loses control of himself, she might hope that her new husband wouldn't.
      Unless I've forgotten something, there is nothing to suggest Paris is worse or equal to Capulet, even if he still has the option to be (by today's standards) horribly abusive. Therefore, I don't see why you seem to think Lady Capulet hoping Juliet's situation might improve is unreasonable?

    But surprisingly, and apparently, the guests of Romeo and Juliet are not as who you might expect. Not expecting because the one who's Romeo and another who is Juliet are the same guests as two different characters in different roles are Jack Dawson and Carrie Mathison, those characters who are very serious in their acts of dramas. I'm talking about the one from a role about a real incident when a voyage without warning to cause chaos was disrupted by an ominous iceberg, while another who is a spy, not spy like creep, a spy like a type of agent who keeps an eye on fights and commotions or terrorism. She watches either on cameras or in person, when chaos happens as fights or conflicts happen, she could shout on security cameras, "Hey, stop!", or in person she would rush after and probably tackle one from attacking another to break up a fight, and save people who are good and innocent during these events, and she would be a hero, as she rushes over near a fight ensuing, to de-escalate it. She would act quickly and restrain them from attacking others, while another or other ones who come over to help separate the two, that's how she would do as a spy like type of some sort of agent is to stop fights, terrorism, or chaos. She would say, "Break it up!".

      @Angie2343 Před rokem +1

      I'm afraid not. As this story takes place in the 1400s, it WAS a arrangement between families. Brides were little more than mere chattel, as well as mere ornaments and servants to their husbands. They had no rights and little freedom after the wedding, and the husband had the power of life and death over his wife.

    This is the worst part of the movie. When we were reading Romeo and Juliet in school, we read in groups for this scene and I volunteered to read Lord Capulet’s lines. Sadly I had to say these lines out loud and in front of a really nice girl. I’m just glad she was reading the nurse’s lines and not Juliet’s. I vowed never to do that again.

      @Finding Yourself I know. I'm just calling out how ridiculous it is for Juliet to marry Paris, because although he IS handsome, if she married him she will regret it instantly, because he would've probably abused her (as women were viewed as property in the 1400s, when the play takes place), and he would've beat and controlled her.
