My kindergarten teacher had a 626 V6 ES in this same color as grill and logo was gold, my late great grandfather had a '96 LX in gray he didn't have it long when it stopped running all of sudden. I used like these cars had great stereo systems and body looked nice on these.

I had an identically spec’d 626 ES, except it was Hunter Green Metallic, and a 5-speed manual. Beautiful car, but if you want to see a truly elegant version, check the 5-door of this generation with its side skirts and integrated hatch spoiler. Unfortunately it was not sold in the US during this generation.

From your own experience with your 626 ES V6. What was the real 0-60 time, vmax and the consumption? I heard it is much faster than advertised. How high were the costs to maintain the car? Did it have anti-lock braking system stock in ES variation and front airbags ? When must the timebelt be changed? Perhaps I can get a 1997 626 ES V6 manual in green with only 70.000 miles on the clock in superb condition. Thanks for the info Matt. Regards Matt

@@angelheart7643 Hello! Oh man, so many questions about a car I haven’t owned since 2004, but I’ll try…
I never timed the 0-60. It was quicker than my previous 87 626 GT Turbo, but it was far more subdued in getting there. It didn’t feel as fast. If my GT was 8.1 seconds (according to what I read) then the ES was probably in the low to mid 7s. I don’t know what vmax is, nor did I track my fuel consumption. I bought the car with 82k miles, sold it with 135k miles 6 years later. I don’t recall any major expenses other than the AC, which for 93 had the old Freon refrigerant that wasn’t available when it started giving me problems. I drove it without AC for a few years. Yes it had ABS, I believe that was part of the ES package, but I’m not 100% sure. For 93 all US 626s had a drivers airbag ONLY. 94 onward they had dual airbags across the line. Don’t recall timing belt details. Awesome deal on the 97 626. Let me know if you get it, I have a set of really cool electroluminescent gauges that I kept when I sold the car… perhaps you’d be interested.

@@BeefyMon Thanks a lot for your detailed infos Matt. I think I will take the 626 in summer. It's the 1997 model bought in the USA, first hand. It was serviced since and was brought to Germany. It will be gifted to me. It will replace my Focus 2.0 Zetec, because the clutch is dying slowly. In 3rd to 5th gear it revs but does not accelerate like it should when in lower revs. When in higher revs there are no problems. I hope I will have the same fun with the 626 V6 GE that I have in my Zetec. I would be the only one with a healthy 626 GE from USA driving In Germany. I will contact you for the gauges when I have the car here.

I still remember the first time I saw one of these when they were new... only a handful of cars left that lasting impression on me. In my country it was also available in the 5 door liftback variant, and that's the model I first saw, in pearl white. I had just started middle school, and it looked like a rolling UFO with it's uncluttered curvaceous bodywork, and color-matched features which was still a rarity at the time. I never did acquire one, but Mazdas of that era continued to stand out even after I became an adult, so the second car I ever bought was it's smaller sibling, a 323F Sport (known as the Lantis is other markets). I've since moved on to other cars, but my mom still has it, and one of the three cars I currently own is the 626's successor, a 2003 Mazda 6 Sport... it too being a curvy sexy design, and has been a sparkling and dependable performer

These old mototowek videos crack me up. Why does the guy who sits in the car always seem like they are attacking the car. Putting on the seatbelt. Aggressive. . Folding down the seats. Aggressive. he even made putting the key in the trunk look aggressive. Empty luggage to load? Do it as aggressively as you can. He’s even giving us the middle finger as he operates the flimsy cup holders. Dude needs some anger management classes.

626 and 6 were always appealing alternatives to what everyone else was driving at the time, although these days the Camry and Accord have become the alternatives to the barrage of crossovers.

I bought a 1993 Mazda 626 LX with the 2.0 liter Quad Cam, 5-speed manual, in Hunter Green, but came with an ES trim with beige leather seats, ES Rims and the spoiler. I loved the gear box, and with the leather seats coupled with a manual transmission, it was sporty and luxurious. Still one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. Super smooth gear box/clutch, 30+ MPG, great highway cruiser. What a car!!!

I remember driving the shit out of my uncle 1993 ES manual for a long trip, the very well finished weird pattern gray cloth interior and swivel vents felt luxurious. It was anemic and felt a bit nose heavy compared to the other "sporty" manual car I was used to at the time (my grandma Celica turbo) but the sound while downshifting was exceptional (for the period). Anyway very fun to drive, since I made the trip in almost half the time it was supposed to take he never let me drive it again.
