      I'm sorry I missed this earlier! LOL!!! Coffee, coffee, coffee......I'm glad you enjoyed the pour-over! ADHD can be difficult for mom more than anything. But it helps to be aware. Once I found out, my compassion for my daughter grew, as well as my patience with her. We did try coffee with her. I heard that since its a stimulant, it can help the focus. She didn't like it.....but since you're a coffee drinker...maybe try a few sips for her! ;) High protein diets and keeping her away from red food dye. I've seen that, that can greatly affect concentration. Just a couple things I've learned. ;)

    I cut the bindings off Masterbooks too. This year Staples said they could not bind the whole book together (too thick) but they could make two books instead of the one. So I had them split the book into semesters! I love it! The book isn't so thick and in my head I know we "should" be done with the first book by Christmas. Then the kids get a "new" book in January!
    We focused on the CC English Grammar memory work (my daughter had it all down) and I have been AMAZED how nicely Language Lessons matches up to the CC grammar memory work. It has definitely given her an advantage in Language Lessons.There is no sentence diagraming in Language Lessons. I've thought about adding it in at some point as well.

      Elaine A I definitely feel like CC gives a good foundAtion for grammar. Thanks for letting me know there’s no diagramming in LLFLE. I figured there wasn’t.
      Two books sounds intriguing. Easier to travel with also!
      I’m thinking of doing an “CC Essentials” day with my 5th and 8th grader together just to review all the grammar and diagramming once a week.

    Just found your channel! I love your videos! You add some needed humor to the day. :) Yes! ADHD and CC essentials....not good. I had planned to do Essentials with my daughter but when the time came, I knew it would be a DISASTER. We started using Language Lessons for a Living Education last year (level 3) and she is doing level 4 this year. I LOVE it. It is so easy to supplement if needed (I do supplement day 1 and the spelling). I supplement day 1 with Brave Writer arrow guide and then I pull in more challenging spelling words from spelling power. We also use her Brave Writer book for the copywork on Day 4 because she says the Bible book is for babies. I don't mind because we begin our day by reading the Bible together. My younger daughter is using Logic of English Foundations and I also LOVE that. I suspect dyslexia with her and it has done wonders for her. She LOVES all the active games and I just roll with it. haha. I plan to move her to LLFLE after she finishes LOE Foundations. LOE Essentials looks like waaaaay too much. Not even going to attempt that. I need simple and to the point!
    PS: Our daughters (my oldest and yours) sound identical. I am sure we could share some stories.... :)

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Před 3 lety +1

      Elaine A thank you and welcome!!
      the LOE Essentials IS a lot more work!!! In don’t remember it having a whole lot of games at all. And the lessons took so much longer!!
      I haven’t ever looked at Braver Writer. I’m hoping to do some IEW again. But we’ll see. This is only our third week of school and I feel like I need to adjust already. But that’s how it goes!
      I’m sure we could share stories!! Ha!! I always tell my daughter, though....she makes me laugh! Keep in the loop if you run across any other great programs for ADHD. So far the reason for spelling also has nice variety. I’ve also contemplated the good and the beautiful.

    • @faithfullyinfertile
      @faithfullyinfertile Před 3 lety +1

      Our Homeschool Plan I tried IEW with my daughter last year and it didn’t go well, but I’m hoping to give it a try again sometime in the future after she has matured a bit. So you like IEW? I’ve heard great things about it and I liked it from what I saw last year (we used 6 lessons and then sent it back for a full refund! I was impressed with their company simply b/c of that!). I really do hope to give it a try and have thought about doing their Dvd program with both of my daughters once the youngest is ready. Any experience with their dvd program?
      Masterbooks and Gather Round have been perfect for my ADHD kids this year (both girls). We use Masterbooks for math and the short lessons are perfect. Before that we used CLE math. My oldest could do the math up until end of level 3 and then the lessons got too lengthy and I realized she wasn’t fully understanding basically anything about math. Math Lessons teaches for understanding and narrating in math has been a huge game changer for her. I just have to keep things simple and straightforward. No adding this that and the other to her workload. She does Language 4, Math 3, America’s Story 1, and then we are doing S America unit study 4x/week and government once a week. It has been so difficult finding what will work with her (exasperating honestly!)

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Před 3 lety +1

      Elaine A I feel your honesty and giggled. 😉 I get it. 😜
      We did IEW with CC and I did every paper with her (every paper that we did, that is....we did not write a paper every week). The Keyword outlines worked well for her. And adding adverbs worked. I like the program as a whole. Did it with my son, and truly I wish I’d been taught how to style papers that way.
      I’ve had experience with the DVDs (again through CC). I highly recommend them!! They are great lessons before writing the paper. They’ll help you for sure! And if you can get your child to watch with you...even better. Andrew Pudewa is fun to watch. He will keep your attention!!
      I should’ve said in my video...besides the spelling, she HATES handwriting. So writing papers out (like IEW suggests,) we didn’t even attempt. She wrote the KWO and then we typed the papers. Breaks my heart that she hates handwriting.....makes it difficult to encourage creative writing and journaling. :( things I love!
      I don’t really have experience with any other writing program except LOE. Their reading program....my daughter also liked and it taught keyword outlines before we quit. ;)
      We are going to do SOME CC essentials at home this year. But then I can customized it for her.
      We’ve used Singapore Math from 1st grade on and haven’t switched. It’s not perfect. But so far it’s working well enough. And I do other math things to make math fun (maybe that will be a future video ;)

      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh I do hope it works for you!!! These are definitely short little lessons. If spelling is difficult for you, you might look at A reason for spelling. I have another video about what that looks like. They are shorter lessons for spelling but also different. I don’t care for the spelling in language lessons for a living education but that’s mostly bc my daughter really, really struggles with it. It’s mostly just a list form here. But if that works for you, then they do provide lists! 😉
      A reason for, concentrates a little more on it but also in manageable chunks. 😊

    I'm starting to realize both my kids might have ADHD (different forms of it), and currently trying to find curriculum for my son who will be going into 5th grade next year. This was really helpful. ☺️ We've been doing Masterbook's for the past few years, and while I plan on switching up math, I was having trouble figuring out it I wanted to stick with it for language.

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Před 2 lety +1

      I’m glad this was helpful!!! If you do suspect ADHD, another resource I’ve found very helpful lately is another CZcams channel called, “How to ADHD”. It’s an adult with ADHD but giving a lot of helpful tips for both the affected and those who love them. My daughter and I have watched several videos and often are laughing bc we can so relate! But they give tips on how to help the ADHD brain concentrate, and how to function, etc.
      But my experience is, it’s has to be fun to them (or figure out ways to make it more fun), and short manageable timeframes work better. So this curriculum definitely has that. :) we’ve also recently switched to TGTB for Language arts (bc I wanted more art and sentence diagramming incorporated) and it also has A LOT of variety! I actually think it has more fun built into it. But….also…the lessons are a little bit longer. So not sure if you’ve ever looked at that but for ADHD brains, I think both of these are great!

    Needing this now! My son is going into 5th and we switched from TGATB mid year to IEW because he hated the fluff in TGATB and the kids just wouldn’t write full sentences…so tried IEW and although we’ve only done 9 lessons he is now writing 4-5 page stories for fun 🤯 but he truly doesn’t like doing IEW although it has helped him tremendously, so now I’m trying to find someone for next year 😭 I was looking at BJU English 5 but it looks like I’ll have to be very involved teaching it and I am looking for something that he can do more on his own with short instruction from me daily🤷🏻‍♀️

      That’s awesome about his writing improvement from IEW! 4-5 pages is amazing!
      Yes, language lessons could definitely be done mostly independently and has less fluff than TGATB! 😉

    Hi, I like this video. My granddaughter is almost 7. She is finishing 1st grade. She seems to be learning well but has a hard time sitting still. I have used LOE and we are in Foundations d. I am concerned about using LOR Essentials. I also use right start math and finishing level b.
    I love your coffee thing. Where did you get it?

      We’ve since had good luck also form The Good and the Beautiful language arts. It also has lots of variety including ART!!! 😉 the good and the beautiful has lots of fun built in, kind of like LOE..but it is less expensive. It includes Geography also!! They are updating their K-2 so if you do decide to look into it, keep that in mind. I think they’ll be updated by summer.
      MB is still nice. It requires a little more from teacher to figure out the fun. I did a comparison of MAsterbooks and TGATB for level 4-6. I’m getting ready to do another comparison of the level 1 in the coming weeks.
      The coffee gadget is called a Chemex. I got mine at a local coffee shop, but they’re also on Amazon. This is a link for an 8 cup one. That’s what we have. It does require special filters. But we love it. We don’t use it every day. But if I want a pour over….this is it!

    We are in our 2nd year. We started with master books in math, language, and science for my older daughter. My younger daughter I just did some store bought workbooks since she was only in preschool. While I love the science, my daughter is not retaining as much as I would like with the other subjects. She gets bored with it. We switched to tgatb for my now kindergartener, and my older daughter will be starting tgatb in the fall. My kindergartener loves tgatb. So I'm hopeful that my older daughter will also. If not, back to the drawing board. 🤷

      Math and language arts are foundational. They’ll build upon on each other and things will be repeated throughout the years. I think….(my opinion)….for history and science….they aren’t going to retain much unless they are are super interested! For those things, it’s about learning to learn….following an interest….sparking curiosity! 😉

    Hi I have a 7 year old with ADHD too we started with simple text books like school zone but she got too bored. Are doing The good and the beautiful sometimes the lessons are longer and only do half or get her to fidget with play dough. If it's a really hyper day I take her outside to the park or inside playground. It's all trial and error.

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes. Trial and error. My daughter isn’t hyper. She’s technically only ADD but they call it all ADHD now. But I’ll also say, she’s growing out of some of it. So maturity helps. We definitely do not sit longer than 40 minutes before getting up and moving for a break. (She probably gets up more than that) but we have morning trampoline time after we do a subject. And I also have a mini trampoline in our basement. Those things help a lot!
      And I notice a big difference when I’ve had her cut out gluten. Diet helps a lot with the concentration!

    I didn’t love LLFALE. I did it last year with my 2nd grader. It just jumped around a lot but I knew I wasn’t depending on it fully. My kid lived it bc it was short and we didn’t do the spelling or reading instruction. We got tired of the stories at the beginning of each unit…we are straight and to the point…impatient and always a step ahead..:😆I beg all of you do not use LLFALE to teach reading. All about reading was the best curriculum! Systematic and thorough and open and go (after you cut out and prepare the level, but it can be reused and it really isn’t difficult.) it’s scripted and easy and stories the kids live so much they steal each others readers and read the stories often! I’ve used other reading/phonics curriculums and was a school teacher for other people’s little people at one time. AAR was great and quick lessons and Fun! Fun! Fun! Really works for short attention spans! For kids and Moms. Thanks for answering all my questions last year. We did the LL2 and it worked because I took what I wanted and left what I didn’t but I didn’t love how it taught language arts, it was a bit convoluted and not very thorough. It made me cringe some days. So I won’t be using it again. Love your channel. You make me laugh, which I appreciate as much as your content. 😁

      Thank you so much!!!
      I’ve never used all about reading but have heard it recommended so much!
      My middle child did My Fathers World for kindergarten and halfway through that, she was reading and we hadn’t even gotten to all the concepts. She just taught herself! I know several that have done that (friends kids) so I also wouldn’t stress too much about reading. Every child learns at different paces and will eventually figure it out!!! My third child took much longer but caught up very quickly! 😉

    • @ambers4524
      @ambers4524 Před 2 lety

      Most kids do need systematic reading instruction. AAR is very easy and kids loved it.
      Some are natural readers, my eldest for sure-ABeka was enough. But another child needed more instruction. So AAR was great! Do you still use LLFALE for upper grades?
