- You are a dedicated Judoka that loves everything about Judo. You train hard at your local dojo even though the facility is not great and there are not that many people to practice with. One day, you get an opportunity to drop in at a local BJJ school, and it's a completely different experience. The facility is brand new with working showers, and there are always tons of people to roll with. You don't want to, but you can't help but ask the question, "Man, why does Judo suck?" In this episode, Shintaro and Peter discuss this provocative question. Why does Judo suck right now, and how can we make it not suck?

There’s a quote from Khabib where he talks about high level judo vs wrestling and he says it harder to be top
In judo for the same reasons
Yes he was talking to Henry Cejudo about it and Henry was laughing mockingly. Khabib got serious and told him flat out that Judo is superior to wrestling
@@David-tk4rj It would be cool to see a judo olympic gold medalist in ufc, who is male
@@David-tk4rjnah Khabib’s dad had that opinion pretty sure you’re not changing his mind on Judo being a tougher Olympic sport
@@David-tk4rj superior to wrestling in what? He was talking about being a world champion in a specific sport. If you mean superior in MMA, most UFC champs have been wrestlers, more than even BJJ.
@@InvisibleHotdogthe Point is high lvl judokas do not enter Now. But maybe in a near Future we could see them entering in the cage, but as i could see judo is better cause It is more complete , takedown, ground control and submissions.
Would love to see Judo go the route of BJJ and become more accessible/popular in the US. Would be great to see dojos and BJJ gyms doing mutual seminars/cross train to introduce the BJJ guys to judo where it’s applicable and where BJJ is lacking - takedowns. Cross pollination might raise all boats and benefit both sides as the judokas train BJJ to improve their ground game and the BJJ guys learn to throw- love that you guys are identifying the issues. Trained judo for years as a teen and am getting into BJJ now and those Judo skills are great to have.
👌🏻
BJJ wont go anywhere in Judo. You must adapt it for Judo ruleset. Most Japanese Judoka do learn from BJJ Yuki Nakai, but Nakai made it BJJ effective under Judo Ruleset. So there are no pulling guard, de la riva guard or spider guard. Just basic Newaza extended with BJJ approach.
I’m just talking about encouraging cross training between disciplines to grow judo in the US, not adapting rulesets. Id love for Judo to become more popular like BJJ is and I think associations between the disciplines to improve overall grappling skills would be beneficial.
Judo would benefit BJJ rolling a lot more than vice versa, especially since judo newaza is totally different unless it's kosen, which is very limited. BJJ marketing would benefit judo a lot tho.
Form what I’ve been told by people who do practice Judo is that it’s hard to find gyms that train safely compared to BJJ. That’s why BJJ tends to be more accessible to more people since it’s pretty low impact most of the time.
Grappling is simply good in general, especially when well designed. Body mechanics are taken into account. Judo and jujitsu are both great for that
As is wrestling
Very true I'm doin catch wrestling and judo little 10 planet 🎉😅
That must be why the few judo olympians (ronda rousey and that cuban dude that fucked up jake sheilds) were such bad asses
it's like boxing and all the varients of kick-boxing, to be n1 boxer in your country is way way tougher than to be no1 kickboxer.
Yeah IBJJF was going to award my daughter worlds gold medal just for showing up because no one in her division. That's when we knew IBJJF is a joke
Judo is an incredible sport. I would like to see it gain the commercial success that BJJ has enjoyed
It’s not as exciting to watch as the others.
As a bjj guy who picked up judo a year ago he’s not wrong shit is rough 😭
Judo, Greco-Roman, and Freestyle are infinitely more difficult to win a legit world championship in than bjj.
Its because there are only one organization while bjj has a lot of them, but we have IFBJJ and ADCC as top organizations also in Brazil CBJJE as Second largest and recognized organization.
I both agree and disagree.
If you're talking about the IBJJF Worlds, Adult division, black belt. That's got roughly the equivalent numbers of medals up for grabs as a judo world championship.
If you're talking about the fact that BJJ allows people to describe themselves as world champions for winning belt divisions, or winning the masters categories; absolutely!
I did the math a little while ago, and the IBJJF alone, potentially awards just over 1000 "world championships" each year! (taking into account weight, gi/nogi, belt rank and masters divisions)
@@Jono793 i myself am a silver medalist in white belt
it depends, the top end of ibjjf and adcc competitors are the real deal and world class
Judo is on a different level than wrestling, because it's the second most practiced sport in the world.
Greco-Roman and Freestyle are popular in different parts of the world which sorta divides the 'market' if you will.
I think it was Rickson who said, Jiu Jitsu would never be in the Olympics because no one could agree on the rules even within the Gracie family. Between that the tremendous growth rate, the lack of serious dope testing . . . who really knows. . . BJJ hasn't peaked or plateaued yet so it's hard to really say much imo
Tournaments for "belt levels" and age would be a great tool for get judo and other grappling sport visibility and a bit more money.
"[BJJ] The marketing machine."
He nailed it. It even bas its affiliate marketers like Rogan.
Oh no! The sport is more accessible to people and gaining popularity! What a heinous crime!!
My friend/judo instructor got invited to complete on the canadian Olympic judo team and he had to turn it down because he didnt have the money
Dave camrillo said the same thing when he was a judoka and why he got fed up with it as did karo parysian
Read both their books you will understand then why high level judo competition is bollocks
When Travis Stevens’s took third in the Olympic i heard he was injured and only used newaza and couldn’t use big throws and got bronze. So yes there’s that
Its marketing !
I take Judo but I also like BJJ, but BJJ has been over marketed. Its now the art of the bro and anyone can do it. Mad respect for the art, but seeing a group of 125pound soy boys vaping and talking about its street fight applications just kills it for me. Once again, respect and love BJJ, but it's the participation trophy main line discipline now.
Rememeber, Olympic Judo and most tournament Judo today is heavily restricted with rulesets to avoid it looking too similar to Olympic or Greco-Roman Wrestling.
I would think the gi would differentiate judo from wrestling.
No lies detected
Owen livsey explained it best, he’s one of the very best in the world currently and he said he does it as a hobby compared to the level he had to be at in judo.
bring back old judo
Except there like 5 people world wide actually doing judo compared to wrestling or jiu jutsu, so less competition to begin with 🤷♂️
So that validates bjj watering down the competition?
A quick search has the worldwide number at around 50 million judokas. So, you’re very wrong.
that's funny, because judo was already a global sport before bjj even became a thing
Would love to take Judo but there is literally nowhere near me
If you live in the United States it’s super rare to find a good gym here. I live in Cali where there should be a lot but it’s still pretty rare to find some. Judo in America is simply not popular compared to Europe and Asia even South America has a lot of Judo gyms
What he’s saying is judo is more selective with their athletes. Not everyone is invited. You have to earn your ticket to be there through the lower levels. This makes sense because it’s an Olympic sport. I see bjj guys in the comments saying judo should be more like bjj. You guys want everyone at every belt level to be able to compete in the Olympics 😂. Come on guys put the joints down.
In wrestling there is only one per weight
If I could do it again, I would have just done judo
Jus because nobody does it, doesn’t make it harder or better.
Is this the same for Olympic qualifiers too?
No one talks to Leroy Brown - Tree top Saint - like this.
How do you become #1-2 if theres no tournaments
Only 2 per country? I think they need a few more than that.
Panamerican are america (the whole continent) and the caribean this is divided in two center-north and sudamerica. each division has a champion a second place and two third in woman and man. the panamerican ranking determine who is in the tournaments. and yes the two best of a country is a way to determine who compete in some world tournaments. My federation president wanted to be only the first one lol....but there is a tournament in japan where there is no weight divisions most -100 or -90 wins, but there have been -70 and I think there was a -66 that won too.
Allow strikes and concrete floors and judo will reveal itself to be the more useful martial art compared to jiu-jitsu, there’s a reason why quick throws and sweeps took precedence over overly long ground work where you’re not expecting to get your head kicked in or trampled by armed horsemen or stabbed by a concealed weapon.
Judo on concrete... totally legal
There is a lot of confusion from the Judo/Karate guys about what modern Jiu Jitsu is and what it isn’t. Jiu Jitsu over the past 15 years really has become a hybrid of all wrestling and grappling disciplines especially in no-gi. Rules essentially become everything is legal except striking. You borrow whatever is effective from wrestling, everything effective from Judo, Sambo, etc… so it seems pretty silly to say in 2023 that Judo is more effective than Jiu Jitsu because modern Jiu Jitsu includes every technique and movement of Judo as a rules-limited sub-discipline of Jiu Jitsu.
It’s kind of like saying Greco is more applicable in a street fight or the cage than freestyle: Freestyle includes every technique and movement that Greco is allowed to use so there’s no way the art of Greco as a rules-limited discipline can be less effective than Freestyle.
Judo guys can't shoot doubles. They can't ankle pick. They can't snatch single. It's an incomplete grappling art.
Jiu jitsu is more complete and has too much freedom which is why guard pulling works
No you are describing Olympic Judo not Judo itself. You are confusing a Sport with a study of techniques with which you may kill if you wish to kill, injure if you wish to injure, subdue if you wish to subdue, and, when attacked, defend yourself. @@SnapBones
Bjj is marketing and everyone gets a participation trophy.
Judo is the real deal.
keep coping
@@kghkfyxkcoping with what? I think his comment is accurate.
@@jordanshadle646coping that judo isn’t as effective as Jiu jitsu
BJJ is literally one of the slowest martial arts for promotions. Even white belt takes 1-3 years to get past. There's no participation trophies in BJJ rank or high level competition. Saying that is ignorant AF towards BJJ when it is incredible as a complement to Judo.
@@ThePimpedOutPlatypus Judo really doesnt need Bjj. Bjj comes from Judo if you knew the history. The gracies took Judo Newaza and just focussed on it.What I meant is that Judo is for serious competitors, whereas Bjj is fine for the 55 year old with the bad back and 35% body fat. Surely there are serious Bjj players, but Bjj is marketed globally as a "for all" as long as you keep paying $$$
💯
Yes, but athletes gain access to more tournaments and therefore more competitive experience
I heard the sussex open was cancelled due to not enough entries.
Yes I meant to be competing there
so learn judo for self defense or no?
cause i think its beautiful
@@WhiteBeltSlayerr dude im gonna move to japan and become a grand master at judo/ gold medalist
My guy, you gave up the dairy didn't you
So does bjj have to apologize for being more popular than judo now ?
so many people practice judo, but how come no one cares about it. Why is there no money involved. Why are very little to no ufc fighters practicing judo.
They mainly do wrestling or bjj
Judo is hard af
This Mama thinks your interest in Jujutsu is well entirely his fault.
I still don't know why there aren't a lot of Judo/BJJ gyms. Not in Texas anyway.
There are in San Antonio
@@erikmelendez9284 BBJ, yes. Judo, not so much. BJJ and Judo? Where?
@@vik12D There's a few. One Judo club with its one place and then 2 jiu jitsu gym with a judo program. Look up Semper Fortis and Southtown Judo Club operating from House of Jiu Jitsu. Houston and Dallas have a bigger Judo community.
Judo guys love to act like the scarcity of competition is a feature and not a bug.
.
Judo is so regulated and strict with a lot of techniques removed. A lot of judoka newaza isn't on the level of BJJ . The top judo athletes are tough as fuck but they'd all loose to gordan Ryan in a submission bout. Ippon ends the match, BJJ goes specifically hunting for the sub or it should be I understand there's a lot of point players. If judo made itself more available like BJJ the sport would grow more and the art would develop. Look how bjj has evolved over the years. Most judo athletes are only in it for competition as soon as that doesn't happen they quit I've seen it many times. Judo as an art should be a way of life but often doesn't happen. More BJJ are in it for longevity and enjoying the art.
So what you are saying is no one cares about judo.
You can qualify if you're competing in a weaker nation.
He's talking about bjj but says jujitsu lol
Man you are great but not totally 😊right. It's harder. Every country is allowed to send 1 in each category an in 2 categories 2.
Fun fact
Japanese Jui Jitsu came before judo
I think everyone knows that.
@@harleypoppitypop3817 I don't think so
Otherwise they wouldn't insult jui Jitsu so much
Since its the art that started judo
the belt divisions means nothing, you can just put a sandbagging guy in the wb division to clean it all out. Belt divisions just f*ckn suck haha.
What do you guys think about the "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?" I know its a stolen marshall art. But what do you guys think about it being used against innocent people. The real Jiu-Jitsu which you guys invented is the real jiu-jitsu. But what do you guys think about it being call "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?"
Stolen? The Gracie family revolutionized jiu jitsu. They were taught it by a Japanese practitioner and evolved it into one of the most useful martial arts in the world
Judo needs ADCC event
I hope this stays this way
Or else it will be as bad as other martial arts
And they should bring back leg techniques
Y y’all keep splitting these 2 arts… u know people can practice both right? 😮
He gotta make money. People like this make more money if your only focused on one thing
I have cross-trained BJJ one day a week for the last 2 1/2 years alongside training Judo. There is some serious ignorance in these comments. I triple dog donut dare you to sign up for some Opens at the Regional level or above. You're going to get humbled if you think it's a joke. You'll get the takedown and a Jits Bro will hop right into a submission. Don't underestimate ground game.
Judo is good, but wrestling is better.
Yea but then you gotta water down BJJ like Judo did. No thanks.
Yea but what high level judo guys are in the UFC or do MMA at high level and are successful at it? Not back in the day either I'm talking right now? 😂. Judo is good but it doesn't carry over good to real world scenarios good. If it was then you'd see a lot of judo guys in MMA dominating. UFC has taekwondo guys, karate guys, high level boxers, high level wrestlers like state champs and good catch and freestyle, top BJJ guys ofc, but no judo guys. Maybe the payout in judo comps is so good so they collectively don't see the need to come over to UFC 😅
Jujitsu is a marketing machine. Ask a guy who owns the school what he does with jujitsu and he’ll reply “ Pay my rent”
so what he is saying is judo is elitist and he's proud of it apparently. oh well less people enjoy participating and even watching judo competitions then. Only the best of the best get to do both of that. And to say that bjj is a marketing machine in this conversation makes it seem like there are many competitions for all levels for the sake of marketing or simply promoting the sport. This ignores other factors that may come into play like the shift in perception of martial arts that started with the ufc, support of wealthy patrons (ADCC) who love bjj (they may love judo too but bjj is really more accessible). the growth of professional athletes who compete in bjj for a living and the whole economic ecosystem of competitions that support that, and perhaps even cultural differences between Brazil (populist and more class fluid) and Japan (highly structured and hierarchical) and cultural differences between modern (bjj) and traditional (judo) martial arts.
I always tell everyone that Judo is like the formula 1 of all martial arts and its for many reasons...
That’s a very interesting analogy. Could you explain what you mean by that?
So Khabib was completely correct in his statements then.
Why are Judo guys so insecure when it comes to bjj? I don’t understand why they always have to assert some level of perceived superiority. It’s so weird.
Itl I've never experienced this. I personally think it's people who do judo + chronically online
There is a mistake! Judo & brazilian jiujitsu are same thing, only is different the rules for competition!
Jiu jistu is great for escapes ,sweeps, getting to your feet aside that ..the rest of it will get you killed in a self defence situation
I placed second (lost first) at the New York Open in 1998.
Id just love if Judo was learning from BJJ marketing machine, its so sad they lost that train, but im sure they can get back to it…! Or so i hope! Its a shame theres a real gap in not making it as accessible to many people as BJJ does
Judo training is literally brutal. I dont mind that there is a higher barrier to entry and a more finite level of comp
Yeah but you don’t take 10 years to get a black belt in judo
black belt in judo means that you start to learn what judo is its not the same
I love asian people so much. Smart and full of wisdom
Judo and BJJ are the same fucking thing. BJJ is just judo with a focus on the newaza. At the end of the day it's all fucking grappling.
Still it takes 10 years to get a bjj black belt . It doesn’t take 10 years to get a black belt in judo
They're both combat sports in the reality is that a champion level BJJ practitioner would rip of world class judo competitor of limb from limb. The rest doesnt matter.
Exactly. Judo is just way too comprehensive for a BJJ practitioner to really handle in reality. BJJ came from judo after all
BJujitsu is a fake name
They do judo newaza
Jujutsu has strikes and throw
BJJ is part of Judo
A sham
