It doesn’t have to though. A band like sugar Ray or smashmouth gets a hit and they adapt their whole sound to it. Other bands like the Beatles and Hum say screw it and use the success of their pop hit to expose fans to more music they would have never heard otherwise.

I’ve noticed a pattern when artists hate their own song: it can be because it’s overplayed on the radio and overshadows the rest of their catalog, because of how it came out, or because of personal reasons.

There was this band Warrant who wrote Cherry Pie, which we know is a disgusting song through and through for it's context. But, there was an interview I had watched that went over this hated song by their artists subject. The vocalist went on to say that ever since they've made that song and album, that became their entire identity.
And I understand that angle, because as a creative musician or artist, you want to create and project things that are very close to your vision to show the world. And yet when you put out something you don't like, but everyone else loves, it may come across almost demeaning and insulting to your vision that people expect more of what you don't like to be made.

    1) Constipation only made up a third of the context of his parody; in fact, he comes up with numerous words and phrases that rhyme with "complicated" ... and it's awesome!
    2) Weird Al himself could make a list like this, as he hated "Girls Just Wanna Have Lunch" so much that he didn't include it on a treasury collection consisting of nothing but food-based parodies.

I’m always interested in hearing about the complex relationship artists have with their own iconic songs. The dissonance between Paramore’s original intent with “Misery Business” and its evolving public reception is as compelling as the musical tension in Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child of Mine.” Similarly, Billy Joel’s unique structure in “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and Pete Townshend’s acoustic departure in “Pinball Wizard” reveal the dichotomy between artist intent and audience interpretation. Even if the artists themselves aren’t fans of these hits, each song is a rich field for musical analysis, highlighting the ever-changing dynamic between creation and reception.

I remember once seeing Iron Maiden and they played mostly new songs and deep cuts. Bruce said "If you just want to hear the hits, go see a cover band". While I get what he was trying to say was that they were still making music and wanted to play those songs, I paid to hear "run to the Hills" and "The Trooper" which were absent from their set. Yet Dream Theater (opening band on that tour) basically just played their biggest songs ending with Pull Me Under which was sort of rare for them as they usually play a different set every night and try not to repeat the songs they played the last time in that city.

Getting away from rock, several years ago on one of Barbra Streisand's live albums, she spoke to the audience about how bored she gets with some of her songs, having to sing them over and over again but she winds up doing it because of a personal experience she had back in the 1960s. She and some friends had gone to France and went to a Jacques Brel concert and she was so waiting to hear "Ne me quitte pas" (better known to the English-speaking world as "If You Go Away") because she loved the song. And he didn't sing it. And she said that stuck with her and it's the main reason she still sings "People" and "Evergreen" and "The Way We Were"--because she knows the people want to hear those songs.
As an aside, I saw Heart in concert a couple of years ago and, yeah, I don't remember them playing "All I Wanna Do." I didn't mind it (it's an okay song but I don't even think it falls in my Top 30 favorite Heart songs--and considering they only had 20 Top 40 hits, that's saying something). I was so stoked they did play "Dog & Butterfly" (that's definitely one of my all-time favorite tracks).

The Perfect Drug was a total shocker, that song is absolutely amazing. When an artist is pushed to create something expeditiously, you'll end up with something that's either really amazing or something that's so terrible they'll never want to speak of it ever again. In the studio you have as long as you want to create something you deem worthy of recording, though there are still deadlines to meet, they are much lengthier as making a good record takes time. During the writing process and extending into the recording process with music I think your project ends up in danger of losing the spark of creativity itself as your ideas tend to languish in your head or on paper for far too long and they're picked at and overanalyzed to death by yourself (primarily) and others until they no longer resemble the great idea you had in the first place. I think this has probably happened to every artist across the spectrum of the arts since the beginning of the arts themselves as it tends to be a pitfall that we all unwittingly trip into as it's human nature to seek perfection in one's endeavors. No musician, writer, painter or whoever wants to be known for a supposed magnum opus they constructed blindfolded which is what I think Trent is implying here with The Perfect Drug and I can see his point, but you can't deny that that song is a masterpiece which, I think, speaks volumes about Trent as a true talent.

There's another aspect to why Reznor hated The Perfect Drug. His original original vision for a follow up album to The Downward Spiral was going to go heavy into Drum and Bass. The Perfect Drug soured it for him so after his first stint in rehab, then the plot to kill himself fell through, he went back to the drawing board which led to what would eventually be The Fragile.

In addition to The Perfect Drug, Trent's not a big fan of The Fragile album---he was pretty much at a very low point during it (he had a very serious drug addiction and was close to suicidal) and he's said that listening to it brings back a lot of bad memories (and he doesn't feel it was his best work as a result of the demons he was fighting). I think it's pretty damn decent though overall! (Yeah, it's kind of hit and miss, but more the former).

This list is making me think of back in 2000 when I went to go see the Christian pop punk band Ghoti Hook play a show. The band was only playing stuff off their newest album and kids in the crowd kept asking for the standout tracks from their first album, and about 2/3 of the way through the show the singer stopped a song and lectured the crowd about how frustrating it is to be demanded to play songs they can't stand anymore when they have new music they're excited about. It was really awkward and off-putting and they broke up within the year I think.

Songs like "rainbow in the dark" off Dio's Holy Diver - I can empathise with John's retelling and I don't know "record label politics" but for me as someone who has seen quite a few songs played before recordings or before an album is out - I would wait to put it on a different album, I would think - why couldn't a legendary/ temporary b-side not be a larger scale success?

Pete Townshend wrote "Pinball Wizard" specifically to appeal to Nik Cohn, a UK music writer who was a massive pinball fan.
And when you pay close attention to the lyrics of "All I Wanna To Is Make Love To You"... *shudder*

Paramore doesn't just play MizBiz occasionally now, it's one of the staples of their shows still. It's really weird too, because they said in 2018 right before their hiatus that they would stop, and then at their first show back at Austin City Limits 2022. they played it and Hayley covers her mouth at "once a whore, you're nothing more. I'm sorry that'll never change" and lets the crowd sing it and then gives a teasing scolding look. Happened at ACL, happened a Bonaroo, happened at my show. I don't think she hates the song, at least for that reason, but she just has a lot of hindsight.

Billy Joel's answer makes perfect sense. I was in a Country band in the 90's and we had to cover "Shameless" by Garth Brooks. As I was playing it, I was like, "hmmm, this seems to be the same exact chords as 'We Didn't Start the Fire' by Billy Joel." Well, Billy Joel DID write Shameless, and it was on the same album as "We Didn't Start the Fire". And out of the three songs, Garth did in the best.
