  • Swapping out the fuel pump unit and the filter on my 2003 Mitsubishi Montero. Fairly easy job, just messy.
    Replacement fuel pump unit part# 950-0180 (Denso - OEM)
    Replacement fuel filter part# 043-3009 (beck arnley)
    Tools needed:
    * 10mm socket
    * 8mm socket
    * Flexible joint extension
    * Nose pliers
    * Flat head screwdriver
    Denso fuel pump kit came with extra stuff, but I ended only using the O-ring, new strainer and the rubber fitting for the fuel pump. Everything else I reused the old parts as they were still in good condition per my visual inspection.
    Cycle the key couple times before starting the engine for the first time to make sure the fuel pump is primed and fuel pressure is there.

    When you replace the unit should you apply oil or some other lubricant to the upper o ring gasket that seals between the fuel tank and the fuel pump/ filter module. I replaced my fuel filter on my NP Pajero a couple of days ago and now have a lingering fuel smell. I rechecked for physical leaks and all hoses replaced correctly. I suspect my old O ring may be not 100% sealing the fuel vapour.

    My Montero's fuel gauge is not reading accurately. Reaches Full but will sink to 3/4 or half tank.
    Is the float part of the pump assembly, or is the float elsewhere in the tank?

    Before my car would just crank and not start. After replacement the car starts up but it takes a little longer to start. Sometimes It cranks a tiny bit more then it used to and other times has a long crank time before ignition. Any ideas?
