James May roasts some quirky kitchen gadgets

  • James May admits that he isn't great at cooking, hence why he has filmed a show for Amazon Prime that specifically targets recipes that anyone with even the slightest hint of common sense can put together.
In this video, James investigates 'kitchen gadgets', analysing the latest and greatest tech to see whether they'd have a place in his kitchen. He likens a does-everything breakfast machine to the concept of religion... So you know this video is a good'un.

My guess on the transparent plastic gadget was, that it was meant for shaking garlic cloves to remove the skin.
As for cubic hard-boiled eggs, I do think they have a lot of merit in packed lunches, as several such eggs are less likely to move about and bang against stuff. However, as someone with room for a dishwashing machine, it fails on my fourth criterion of cost-benefit when I have to manually wash it after each use. Especially when I’d really want 3 of them to use in parallel, then have to wash all 3. No!

Unsolicited garlic peeling tip: Cut the root end off with a knife (big one), lay the flat of the knife on the clove, place the heel of your palm on the knife over the clove, push down forcefully with your body weight crushing the clove under the knife, the skin slips off of the crushed clove easily. Dicing the clove is optional, crushing is sufficient for most recipes.

The egg press is used to create consistent egg slices for canapes or tiny sandwiches. I heard about these, but it was in the past tense, a Victorian Egg Press. They were used for picnics. I want one, where can I get one?

Dried pasta is actually more authentic. Pasta was often made to store and keep for days when fresh food was not available. And dried pasta allows you to achieve the al dente texture as well as make richer sauces.

I didn't notice the dripping tap because I was too preoccupied with how the LED tape has been taken right to the end so casts a wedge of light onto the side of the oven. Having it stop 50mm short of the end would still light the worktop but would do so more discreetly.
