Leon Redbone appeared out of the ether, fully formed, as a time traveler, showing us that who we are, is who we were. Then, once he saw he had secured the music's immortality, he slipped back into the eternal plane from whence he came.

Absolutely. Totally invented himself, and was "very secretive" about his origins and personal life. Bonnie Raitt said - "The Best Vocal Tone and Guitar playing" of anyone she knew. That's pretty high praise. RIP Leon.

Very well said my friend! The other day I came across an avid/rabid fan's DISGUST AT "REST IN PEACE" underneath yet another "moved elsewhere or into somebody else" - QUIT POSTING THIS SENTIMENTAL TWADDLE HE WROTE, I COULD HEAR HIS PEN SHOUT- his thoughts were like yours, ours- might have been David Ziggy Stardust Bowie- also a cosmic force to be reckoned with- or Jimi Hendrix- there he was in beaded suede, replete with fringe and a "bottleneck" on one finger, saying "hey mama where's my guitar...No, I don't want my soother! Point me to England"...or some such jive. The child was right! If I visualize Leonard Cohen "as deceased" my fantasies would be like those of Art Garfunkel's, "Alex" in Bad Timing, a great Ken Russell, also "left early" playing for FREE on CZcams! Check it out all you "disgusting, disturbed perverts" that's one one idiot, he's entitled to his opinion wrote of the "plot" which SPOILER has a semi-necrophile scene, as my erstwhile fantasies of dear Mr. Cohen would be- VERY UNCOOL. GARDEN VARIETY BORE TYPICAL BOURGEOIS HERE, nothing kinky...I digressed, for those who are here digging a Very Cool Cat watch the film and tell me is it not an early Christmas gift? She Teresa Russell's character, sadly, is rather like me...Much better looking but overall she let her "inner Holly Golightly out- and the action takes place in Vienna and sigh, Ken Russell's fantastic brain, a "trip" without a pill. Like Leon Redbone's music, a trip that is habit forming but SAFE. You might even learn something along the way...Namaste ( PUTIN!!!! You S.O.B. KNOCK IT OFF or STOP KNOCKING PRECIOUS HUMANS OFF- CHILL YOU MISERABLE, PITIFUL EXCUSE FOR A HUMAN AND DIG LEON OR DANCE!!! ) sorry I rarely get political but last night my hubby told me of yet another vile attack and merde! Merde, merde, merde! Watch the movie I mentioned. Read a Holy Book of your choice. Read Bugs Bunny- like the above cartoon reference, Warner Bros in their Golden Years! Time for David Bowie and Marianne Faithfull as a nun...

He sat in a chair by a table with a lamp and lit a cigar and sipped a glass of wine as if he was in his own living room and sang this among many others 45 years ago. We all loved every minute of it.

Loved Leon from the beginning on SNL. He lived about 2 hours away from me in Pa. His birth name was Dickran Gobalian and sang the song for the Mr. Belvedere and Harry and the Hendersons TV shows. Redbone was elusive about his origins, and never explained the origin of his stage name. He was born in Cyprus to Armenian parents. While living in Canada in the late 1960s, Redbone began performing in public at Toronto area nightclubs and folk music festivals. He met Bob Dylan at the Mariposa Folk Festival in 1972. Dylan was so impressed by Redbone's performance that he mentioned it in a Rolling Stone interview, leading that magazine to do a feature article on Redbone a year before he had a recording contract. The article described his performances as "so authentic you can hear the surface noise of an old 78 rpm." Dylan said that if he had ever started a label, he would have signed Redbone. I like that Dylan liked him as well. RIP Leon, me and Bob miss you.

I'm just starting to (and enjoying!) get into Leon Redbone's incredible music, although it was something I should have done 45+ years ago. I think it was around '76 or '77 when a dear friend of mine told me he was going on tour with Mr. Redbone and would be gone for some time. I didn't have a clue who Colin was playing with & at the time was into prog rock, so Leon & his music went by the wayside. My apologies to Colin & the late Mr. Redbone as I am now realizing what I had missed for all those years.

(where in the park I don't remember except that it wasn't a permanent music venue, just a temporary stage in a field) and I was about 50-75 feet away. He sat in a big comfy chair made for a living room with a table next to him that held a lamp and a big ashtray. Pitch dark, outdoors and, my memory says, only the light of the lamp on him. He was as cool as cool can be, he sounded as wonderful as always and no matter how many songs he played, it wasn't enough.

I think God took him because he wanted Leon Redbone voice lessons. RIP Leon; you are for the ages.

Had the opportunity to see him play a tiny club in Woodstock N.Y. Back in the late eighties or early nineties....an absolutely fabulous showman and wonderful performer ....

Too cool for school. Mr. Redbone was the smoothest also. Ragtime, Vaudville crossed to make his own unique genera. He was one of a kind. Rest in Cool, Leon Redbone. 😎

One of the few performers my late father and I enjoyed equally. Thank you for bringing back such pleasant memories. It's almost like he's sitting on the end of the couch, just while the music plays.

I clicked on a "Mr. Belevedere" marathon, which reminded me how much I enjoy Leon. So here I am. :-))
Before I got old, I used to sing this song whenever I found a musician or band who knew it, and would let me sing along. :-D
Learned how to sing it watching Stormin' Norman and Sweet Suzie at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel in Providence Rhode Island.

I found this man's music in the late 80's. I purchased all of it that I could find. You were missed when you quit recording a few years ago, but now it is a final play of all the tunes just to remember that grand baritone voice! May God enjoy your music as much as I have!

Well Verner thanks for making me cry. Mr Redbone, I won't say RIP either but add my wishes to Verner's that your wonderful music and voice will give pleasure to the One who created you as you sing to Him, and that you never run out of songs or music...somehow I don't think that will happen. ❤️

Seen him on SNL in the 70's while in my mid 20's my parents laughed at me like I was an idiot, since they were a product of the 1920's and were very ignorant and uneducated. Sure they meant well but very stupid as well, my 32 year old daughter loves the Beatles who were around well before she was. That was thanks to me her loving dad.
