Korea has become the Forgotten War. So much so it's often never taught in schools. Why did the Koreas become split? How does this affect us?

My grandfather, who passed away 2 years ago, fought in the Korean War. I only ever asked him about it once, for a school project about veterans. He smiled quietly, and went and pulled out an old memento-filled scrap-book looking-thing. It had a worn leather cover, decorated with ornamental asian-designs. Looking back on it now, he most likely bought it in Japan while on R&R leave. It was filled to the brim with photographs, old maps, travel and ID documents, and the like. He told me of some of his more wild, hairy "adventures" during the war. Almost getting shot by his own side. Showing a foolish general some humility. Meeting his Japanese girlfriend. The whole time there was a small smile on his face that only wavered when he pointed out his old friends in some the pictures. A young, smiling man posing in front of a half-track. A group of guys walking on a road in a wide open field. He didn't talk of them much, and sensing why; I never pressed him on it.
The Korean War was, and is, a footnote for most people. But for me, it will never be.
Kurt Yarish Thank you for sharing. GOD bless you sir.
Kurt Yarish Actually pretty interesting
Kurt Yarish / So what you are saying is.....you are part Japanese and can I smash?
Wow the way you described it was immeasurable, I mean it as a way of saying pretty good.
MrDougy Lol, no, he never had kids with the Japanese girlfriend. She was a short time thing.
*Seriously though, why don't History Classes teach the Korean War?*
Linklgas Our education system from the Cold War censored a lot.
Also, because of the liberal and leftist nature of our education system, communism isn't regarded with the same hatred like fascism is, despite communists having committed the same and even worse crimes against humanity that fascists have. American wars against communists in Asia, for example the Vietnam war, are seen as immoral and imperialistic; our own citizens denounce our own military for their actions. The truth is the left/liberal see communism as an idealistic system and believe American intervention into stopping the spread of it is wrong.
It does get taught mostly just before it starts to 1953
He already said. It is smashed between two way bigger wars.
its called the forgotten war for a reason

My great-granduncle fought in the Korean War. He's in his 90's now, and I often hear about what he experienced there.
One experience he could recall was watching one of his friend's planes crashing, killing him inside.
He remembers sitting in a foxhole for hours, saying he hated it.
It's truly remarkable to hear the stories of survivors. Let us learn from those who came before us, before they are gone.
L bozo
Does he remember contributing to the genocide of 5+ million innocent North Korean people, as well as flattening their land completely? An American Korean war veteran should not be proud of their participation. Like Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, every American should look at their participation in those imperialist ventures with utmost shame.

"The oldest one is ww2..."
WW1: am I a joke to you?
Our involvement in ww1 was nothing compared to ww2. Nor was the aftermath the same either.
lol
America didn't really do much in WW1. And post WW2 saw the downfall of European Empire and the rise of the USSR and USA. The USA went from being an isolationist nation who only cared about the Americas to an expansionist superpower the likes of which the world hasn't seen since the days of the Roman Empire. That's why WW2 is so important. While Europe and Asia were in ruins, America was getting filthy rich. While Germany, Britain, France etc lost millions upon millions of people the USA only lose a few hundred thousand. We suffered very little in WW2, while the entire rest of the world suffered massively. We got stupid rich and held a monopoly on military equipment during and post WW2. It was the death of American isolationism and the birth of American intervention. Post WW2 America was the golden era, which is why it's the most important in American history.
116,000 American troops were killed in WWI and 405,000 American troops were killed in WWII.

I have to thank you for posting this, and posting it today of all days.
Today would be my grandfather's birthday, he served during the Korean War (5th Regimental Combat Team), so to see this today made me feel like he was being remembered, even if only as a footnote.
Again, thank you.
DarkAvengerVIM Thanks for posting GOD bless you and have a great day.
It may be a footnote in other countries, but in Korea we all remember soldiers from America and other allies who came to a country they'd never heard of to ensure our liberty. 50 million people live in relative prosperity, not the communist shithole, because of men like your grandfather.
Thank your grandfather for his service.
Hansol Kim
I know you're comment wasn't directed at me, but my grandfather served during the Korean war as well, so I just wanted to say thank you for the kind words.
If he was still alive I'm positive him knowing that his service was appreciated and remembered would put a smile on his face, I know it did for me.

I knew about this war because my Grandfather was drafted for the US Army. He was in logistics, driving trucks, tractors, other heavy machinery and building airfields. It changed his life and expanded / refined his skills. When he returned he married Grandma, was hired by GM, had five sons and the rest is history.

Here you go: North Korea does something stupid and attacks the US, South Korea and/or Japan. The US responds by bombing the hell out of North Korea military and leadership targets until Kim is no more and the North Korean military surrenders. It all will be over within a week. Easy peasy. Then the US, China and the world would have to decide what to do about North Korea and it's people. I'm assuming a push would be made to reunify Korea.
the worry that china had in the 50s that caused them to commit hundreds of thousands to defend nk still exists, namely the potential situation where us troops would be at the yalu river. so basically, no chance in hell korea united if it's still an american military ally
my grandfather fought in the Korean war. he was a boat driver, he said he saw countless people die when they hoped off his boat and onto the beach and then he drove back to the ship, got more men and doped them off at the beach, watching then die in front of him.
Masked Man sounds like d-day
yeah I know right
What ship was he on? or was it just a small motorboat?
That sounds like total BS.
Mine too exept he was a medic
Toward the end of the video, you said that U.S is still at war with North Korea because there was no peace treaty signed. That's not actually true. The U.S Congress never declared war. So that means the U.S never declared war. U.S was there on a "Police Action". South Korea and North Korea are still at war, but not U.S.
GhostVader1999 oh yeah thanks for the heads up
@NatPop 2018, the end of the Korean war.
Officially yes but unofficially no.
North Korea and South Korea are in a frozen conflict. The Korean War lasted from 1950 to 1953 but the Korean conflict is ongoing since 1945.
My granddad fought in the Korean war, he was a great man; died last year.
I salute you Cody, thanks for educating us on the forgotten war!
Have a great day everybody ;)
Simple Man1 Sorry for your loss RIP
Simple Man1 / It's not forgotten dumbass.
MrDougy
It kind of is. It's not talked about much
MrDougy Don't be rude, and yes it often is overlooked by many Americans
My great grandfather fought there too, but as a Korean. They never found him again, only a few things were found *might* be related to him, were one of his fingers and few strings of hairs were found, and they didn't even know if it is his or not. They buried him in the deep deep mountain, my grandfather sometimes visit there and trying to remember the one he never seen in his life. My great grandmother ran away for her life since N. Korea was closing in, my grandfather never saw his parents in his life, and he grew up only with her sister. Quite a normal story, back in that day.
Bad haircut? Kim's fade is straight fire yo

I'd rather think that the war of 1812 is the most forgotten
Well it was a stalemate in the treaty (The British TECHNICALLY won due to the fact they achieved their war goal - Defending Canada, meanwhile the Americans failed to annex Canada, yet succeeded in stopping British trade restrictions, all in all, the British succeeded in all objectives, the Americans only got some.)
I think the only reason it's forgotten is stalemate.
+Zombiekiller
It's forgotten becuase:
1. it was pointless, didn't achieve anything at all, an nothing interesting (outside of the whole burning white house thing) happened. It didn't influence the flow of the history in any meaninffull manner.
2. IN Europe there was MUCH more interesting war. Napoleon has been crushing army after army for years, and was in the middle of the invasion of Russia, leading one of the most numerous armies of its times, and tasting his biggest defeat. Moscow burned, hundreds of thousands killed, epic battles, and hundreds of tragic stories on both sides, with the legendary and tragic retreat finishing it. We see the crush of the myth of Napoleon's invincibility, and birth of the Russian Winter's fame.
Though if you want a compressed version, not even Americans though it to be name-worthy.
What about that one war I can’t remember the name of that was over a bucket
local techpriest that's not the truth it's not forgotten.
What war?

that will never happen if kim jong un is in power
We probably will, China isn't backing NK right now, and China and the US's relations are better than ever. As we speak arrangements are being made between the US and China to deal with Mr. Glorious Leader
I personally don't want them to unite. Too many poor ass north koreans will be on welfare and South Koreans will foot the bill. A sizeable percentage of them are brainwashed crazies so why would you let them in.
Sir Jay Wrenington Ironic how everyone thought that our Russia/US relations would get better while the China/US relations get worse.
Lets hope for Korean War Part II: Electric Boogaloo.
It'll last like, a couple days. The DPRK's military is awful. Their weapons are beyond outdated as they still use weapons from over a century ago. They also have outdated tech as their aircraft are all Soviet era 1950's 60's or 70's tech. They would be crushed by South Korea alone. But with all of NATO against them, it would take a couple days.
Einstien And Enfield truth
We saw that in WWII. America and the Soviets (the two superpowers of that era) fought the German Reich together.
"over a century ago"
yeah boi north korean redcoats
madcat789 look up electric boogalo on pornhub
30,000 Americans dead, and barely a mention in the history books. We gotta fix that.
BEYOND MAD Only 30k, how about the soviets 20 million + in WW2, or the millions of French and British casualties in BOTH wars. America has never suffered more than 400000 casualties in a war
U.S. planes dropped 635,000 tons bombs and 32,557 tons napalm on the Korean peninsula within 3 years, more than they did during the entire Pacific campaign in WWII.
U.S. military and its puppet government killed more than 20% of total Korean population. In the same rate with what Nazi did in Poland.
@Dark Lord really? I think the US is a pretty good country
seeing how we don't hate gays or women.
@@chelseacomps829 Until we started killing each other
Also it was around 36,000, not counting those missing, which totaled around 7,000. So possibly more than 40,000 died. Of course, 136,000 South Koreans died fighting, and 3 million citizens died, but who really cares about that?
This was taught to me. I'm 15 in year 10 and the Korean war was added to the GCSE. Next we are doing the Vikings!
Is it technically WWIII if it's the entire world versus North Korea?

I would love it if Cody did that.
You know, Austria, Hungary, and you know, Austria-Hungary, is one of my favorite countries to learn about in history, but i have no idea what happened to from 1947-Present day......
Austria, like Germany, got split up into different zones of occupation following the end of WWII in Europe. Austria ended up recovering quickly and today it is a very prosperous country. But Hungary was worse off after the war since they became a Soviet satellite state and they wouldn't recover as fast.

Thanks for this video. Good information.
great video !! nailed it.
FYI: South Korea was NOT a democracy at the time of the Korean war. South Korea was a dictatorship until the 1980s.
he reversed how the two leaders were put into power
Funny that he did. Korea has some pretty interesting history that nobody ever talks about such as the Jeju Genocide (1948-1950) that was carried out by the American side and the south. There is a reason this is the "forgotten war" and it is because we don't want to remember it as it was one of the most unjust wars of the 20th century.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeju_uprising
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodo_League_massacre
The sources you linked don't mention american involvement. It also doesn't mention anything about genocide, just a massacre (2 separate massacres at that).
Our government is very good at hiding shady shit.
+Lee Wonjea Perhaps, but that statement doesn't convince me of anything.
"The North originally prospered."
Kim Jong-Un: "SIKE NIGGA YOU THOUGHT"
I was given a history book for my sophomore year and I looked through it. My favorite subject is the Korean War because I find it so interesting. I was shocked to see that the author had only given the war a small section, having only 5 pages. However, WWII and Vietnam both have huge chapters compared to Korea. WWII with 38 and Vietnam with 28. It saddens me that even our teachers are refraining from passing down the memories of such an enormous conflict that still effects us today, taking up many of our soldiers to protect a border from resuming something terrible on a much larger scale. Relatives and people I know served in and during Korea and it just hurts.
4/5 great dictators agree you need a beard or a mustache to be a great dictator
The 1 dictator out of that denies such claims.

Ok, why is there no Korean War FPS Battlefield game? How about I fix that?
www.moddb.com/mods/battlefield-korea
I have created a 100% free total conversion modification for the PC game Battlefield 2, called"Battlefield: Korea".
I have been busting my ass trying to make this game for a long time now. We finally released it on Christmas 2016. I am still working on it and we are adding new content all the time. The UK Commonwealth faction is coming soon!
Vixen .-. Thanks! We put a lot of love into this game, and hope we are doing the conflict justice, and also making a fun and interesting way for younger generations to learn about the Korean War.
My grandfather fought over there from 1950-53, so he was there most of the conflict. He participated in Pusan, Inchon and fought deep into North Korea. He had some crazy stories to tell me. He said the Chinese and North Koreans were not to be underestimated and he had respect for them as fighting men. He said there were very capable adversaries.
I lost my grandfather 4 years ago on my birthday, and I loved him very much. So I wanted to dedicate this to him and all the others that were affected by the conflict on all sides of the war.
BFKAnthony817 lol
BFKAnthony817 Man me and my friends came up with a great idea for mod the only issue is none of us are moders where does one aquire these skills.
Paul Harrison Well, I will admit, I was shown the ropes by very smart friends of mine. It is not easy at all, but I am a dedicated person, so I just kept learning and working on it. I can tell you if you want to learn how to mod BF2, there are websites out there that will teach you how to do everything from coding to animating or 3d modeling and textures. Check the tutorials section for BF2 at moddb, and also Battlefield Singleplayer websites.

A good video and clear information relay nice job
Dang cody, I was used to the whole waiting every 6 months for you to upload but you've been killing it with these video production rates XD.
I find it sad that the Korean War is basically unknown at this point, millions died in a proxy war over two different ideologies, just to have neither side win. It's put the Korean Peninsula in a tension filled state, both sides are thinking that the other will make the first move and are ready to retaliate at any moment. It's also left Korean War veterans feeling forgotten for their efforts. I find it saddening that the Korean War is glanced over in history classes in the U.S.
I know, it is sad. Korea should be remembered more in my opinion.
Mr. Anderson - professional catholic monster hunter To be fair I consider the Korean War to be a victory or perhaps a "half-victory". The reason being that the US succeeded in liberating the South, but didn't succeed in eradicating the North. And I would consider China to be the who truly won as it succeeded in its only goal of keeping a US backed and armed country off its borders.
I remember myself learning about the Korean War. This is the story; I was about 9 or 10 when my dad came home with some very old books, from the early '60s. Me being into history a ton, I decided to read them. When I got to the last book (keep in mind, this was the early '60s, the book ended at the Cuban Missile Crisis,) I found out about the Cold War. I read about the North Korean invasion of the South, the U.N landing at Inchon, and the push to the Yalu river, and how China retaliated in force. I kept reading and it slowed down heavily after that. That chapter of the book ended in 1953. That is as close as I have ever gotten to knowing close to anything about the Korean War, minus documentaries.
Can you do more videos regularly? I like to learn about history and your channel offers a lot.
I learned about the Korean War from M.A.S.H. 4077.
I love how he uploads a video about the Korean War when there will probably be a Korean War Part 2 in like a few months
Thank you very much for talking about the Korean war. My grandfather was a solider during the Korean war and coming out of it with 2 purple hearts. I sadly never got to hear any of his stories about the war and what he did in it and it makes me so upset knowing that I could of learned such great history but I didn't. To this day I regret not knowing his stories and his experience... Again Thank you KnowledgeHub for making this known to others, I will definitely be watching this video again when it gets to 7/7/17

Few to add:
Korean under the Japanese occupation had constantly begged America for support and help. Russia was the one that provided them. After Japan's lose, the"south" had nothing to protect them while the "north" had Russian support. The Incheon push was led by McArthur (there is a statue there honoring him)... but he was fired when the south pushed all the way to China. (Allegedly, he wanted to attack China, which is what brought the wrath of the Chinese into the war which pushed the South back to the 38th).
America installed "democratic" dictator Lee Seungman and just left... high corruption and turmoil with multiple coup d'etats and student riots (which became massacres)
S.Korea's rise is thought to start after the Miracle of the Han River supported/advised by JFK (boat making companies and other chaebols (Samsung, Lotte, etc) started to bring income and the Korean people worked to their bones
My grandparents stated that life was better under Japanese occupation than the communists or the decade after the armistice
Actually general MacArthur was fired after requesting the president to drop nuclear weapons on China, after they protected North Korea.
Also: The Americans killed 5+ million innocent Koreans in the North, flattening their land through intensive bomb campaigns, and eradicating their cultural beauty. Plus, the North never invaded the South, they resisted the fascist dictatorship that America had installed there, one in which was attempting to destroy the North, as you rightly stated.
The Philippines help in that war by sending troops and fun fact the husband of the lady who brought democracy in the country actually fought in that war.

Don't worry, IF NK attacks SK, US and China will jump in the war, this will soon exclate in WW3, so majority of caulaities will be Chinease, Russian, American and Indian, not SK
People don't seem to realize China doesn't care for North Korea, and honestly I think it's more likely that North Korea will be invaded by China than America
Don't forget about Daesh/ ISIL. Most of their soulless fighters are foreigners, and there are some South Koreans fighting for them in Syria, so if they come back to the Korean Peninsula and launch a jihad there when North Korea and South Korea duke it out, we're fucked.
Being Korean, I would like to thank you, KnowledgeHub, for writing this.
Hey for next episode would you make a video about the history behind Cinco de Mayo or May 5th about the Battle of La Puebla
How did I actually not know this channel was a thing?

My grandfather is a veteran of the Vietnam War. I have to say thank you for giving it more exposure and giving people like me a way to learn about it.
I show my best gratitudes to all Americans and every other ally of UN who worked to defend our homeland and its liberty. Back then we were a country under such a vulnerable environment which just gained independence. Every drop of blood your grandfathers spilled and every voice that called out for support to the little known country made it possible to achieve our miracle - growing into an economic powerhouse as well as an arguably strong military power. Our alliance with the US possesses an outstanding value, this is to be remembered by our citizens with no end.
P.S. Thank you too, KnowledgeHub! You're my favorite informative channel on YT. Your works are always intriguing ;))
If the north tries to do something stupid again we've do your back buddy. We'll give hell and help to unify a divided people.
We got your back.

As someone related to a Korean War veteran, thank you for your kind words.

I'm so happy to see that nobody forgets this war, my grandfather fought in this war, earning 2 bronze stars, a silver star, and 3 purple hearts
I feel that this video has been inspired all due to the recent events on what is happening near North/South Korea...
