My grandfather, who passed away 2 years ago, fought in the Korean War. I only ever asked him about it once, for a school project about veterans. He smiled quietly, and went and pulled out an old memento-filled scrap-book looking-thing. It had a worn leather cover, decorated with ornamental asian-designs. Looking back on it now, he most likely bought it in Japan while on R&R leave. It was filled to the brim with photographs, old maps, travel and ID documents, and the like. He told me of some of his more wild, hairy "adventures" during the war. Almost getting shot by his own side. Showing a foolish general some humility. Meeting his Japanese girlfriend. The whole time there was a small smile on his face that only wavered when he pointed out his old friends in some the pictures. A young, smiling man posing in front of a half-track. A group of guys walking on a road in a wide open field. He didn't talk of them much, and sensing why; I never pressed him on it.
The Korean War was, and is, a footnote for most people. But for me, it will never be.

Also, because of the liberal and leftist nature of our education system, communism isn't regarded with the same hatred like fascism is, despite communists having committed the same and even worse crimes against humanity that fascists have. American wars against communists in Asia, for example the Vietnam war, are seen as immoral and imperialistic; our own citizens denounce our own military for their actions. The truth is the left/liberal see communism as an idealistic system and believe American intervention into stopping the spread of it is wrong.

My great-granduncle fought in the Korean War. He's in his 90's now, and I often hear about what he experienced there.
One experience he could recall was watching one of his friend's planes crashing, killing him inside.
He remembers sitting in a foxhole for hours, saying he hated it.
It's truly remarkable to hear the stories of survivors. Let us learn from those who came before us, before they are gone.

America didn't really do much in WW1. And post WW2 saw the downfall of European Empire and the rise of the USSR and USA. The USA went from being an isolationist nation who only cared about the Americas to an expansionist superpower the likes of which the world hasn't seen since the days of the Roman Empire. That's why WW2 is so important. While Europe and Asia were in ruins, America was getting filthy rich. While Germany, Britain, France etc lost millions upon millions of people the USA only lose a few hundred thousand. We suffered very little in WW2, while the entire rest of the world suffered massively. We got stupid rich and held a monopoly on military equipment during and post WW2. It was the death of American isolationism and the birth of American intervention. Post WW2 America was the golden era, which is why it's the most important in American history.

Here you go: North Korea does something stupid and attacks the US, South Korea and/or Japan. The US responds by bombing the hell out of North Korea military and leadership targets until Kim is no more and the North Korean military surrenders. It all will be over within a week. Easy peasy. Then the US, China and the world would have to decide what to do about North Korea and it's people. I'm assuming a push would be made to reunify Korea.

They buried him in the deep deep mountain, my grandfather sometimes visit there and trying to remember the one he never seen in his life. My great grandmother ran away for her life since N. Korea was closing in, my grandfather never saw his parents in his life, and he grew up only with her sister. Quite a normal story, back in that day.

I think the only reason it's forgotten is stalemate.

      It's forgotten becuase:
      1. it was pointless, didn't achieve anything at all, an nothing interesting (outside of the whole burning white house thing) happened. It didn't influence the flow of the history in any meaninffull manner.
      2. IN Europe there was MUCH more interesting war. Napoleon has been crushing army after army for years, and was in the middle of the invasion of Russia, leading one of the most numerous armies of its times, and tasting his biggest defeat. Moscow burned, hundreds of thousands killed, epic battles, and hundreds of tragic stories on both sides, with the legendary and tragic retreat finishing it. We see the crush of the myth of Napoleon's invincibility, and birth of the Russian Winter's fame.
Though if you want a compressed version, not even Americans though it to be name-worthy.

Austria, like Germany, got split up into different zones of occupation following the end of WWII in Europe. Austria ended up recovering quickly and today it is a very prosperous country. But Hungary was worse off after the war since they became a Soviet satellite state and they wouldn't recover as fast.

I was shocked to see that the author had only given the war a small section, having only 5 pages. However, WWII and Vietnam both have huge chapters compared to Korea. WWII with 38 and Vietnam with 28. It saddens me that even our teachers are refraining from passing down the memories of such an enormous conflict that still effects us today, taking up many of our soldiers to protect a border from resuming something terrible on a much larger scale. Relatives and people I know served in and during Korea and it just hurts.

My grandfather fought over there from 1950-53, so he was there most of the conflict. He participated in Pusan, Inchon and fought deep into North Korea. He had some crazy stories to tell me. He said the Chinese and North Koreans were not to be underestimated and he had respect for them as fighting men. He said there were very capable adversaries.
I lost my grandfather 4 years ago on my birthday, and I loved him very much. So I wanted to dedicate this to him and all the others that were affected by the conflict on all sides of the war.

I find it sad that the Korean War is basically unknown at this point, millions died in a proxy war over two different ideologies, just to have neither side win. It's put the Korean Peninsula in a tension filled state, both sides are thinking that the other will make the first move and are ready to retaliate at any moment. It's also left Korean War veterans feeling forgotten for their efforts. I find it saddening that the Korean War is glanced over in history classes in the U.S.

Mr. Anderson - professional catholic monster hunter To be fair I consider the Korean War to be a victory or perhaps a "half-victory". The reason being that the US succeeded in liberating the South, but didn't succeed in eradicating the North. And I would consider China to be the who truly won as it succeeded in its only goal of keeping a US backed and armed country off its borders.

I remember myself learning about the Korean War. This is the story; I was about 9 or 10 when my dad came home with some very old books, from the early '60s. Me being into history a ton, I decided to read them. When I got to the last book (keep in mind, this was the early '60s, the book ended at the Cuban Missile Crisis,) I found out about the Cold War. I read about the North Korean invasion of the South, the U.N landing at Inchon, and the push to the Yalu river, and how China retaliated in force. I kept reading and it slowed down heavily after that. That chapter of the book ended in 1953. That is as close as I have ever gotten to knowing close to anything about the Korean War, minus documentaries.

    Few to add:
Korean under the Japanese occupation had constantly begged America for support and help. Russia was the one that provided them. After Japan's lose, the"south" had nothing to protect them while the "north" had Russian support. The Incheon push was led by McArthur (there is a statue there honoring him)... but he was fired when the south pushed all the way to China. (Allegedly, he wanted to attack China, which is what brought the wrath of the Chinese into the war which pushed the South back to the 38th).
America installed "democratic" dictator Lee Seungman and just left... high corruption and turmoil with multiple coup d'etats and student riots (which became massacres)
S.Korea's rise is thought to start after the Miracle of the Han River supported/advised by JFK (boat making companies and other chaebols (Samsung, Lotte, etc) started to bring income and the Korean people worked to their bones
My grandparents stated that life was better under Japanese occupation than the communists or the decade after the armistice

Don't worry, IF NK attacks SK, US and China will jump in the war, this will soon exclate in WW3, so majority of caulaities will be Chinease, Russian, American and Indian, not SK

People don't seem to realize China doesn't care for North Korea, and honestly I think it's more likely that North Korea will be invaded by China than America

Don't forget about Daesh/ ISIL. Most of their soulless fighters are foreigners, and there are some South Koreans fighting for them in Syria, so if they come back to the Korean Peninsula and launch a jihad there when North Korea and South Korea duke it out, we're fucked.

I show my best gratitudes to all Americans and every other ally of UN who worked to defend our homeland and its liberty. Back then we were a country under such a vulnerable environment which just gained independence. Every drop of blood your grandfathers spilled and every voice that called out for support to the little known country made it possible to achieve our miracle - growing into an economic powerhouse as well as an arguably strong military power. Our alliance with the US possesses an outstanding value, this is to be remembered by our citizens with no end.
P.S. Thank you too, KnowledgeHub! You're my favorite informative channel on YT. Your works are always intriguing ;))
