3:45 not wanting to wear boots wasn’t the only reason why they didn’t participate, they also refused to compete because the federation thought the trip to Brazil was too expensive at the time, and considered saving up funds for the Olympic Games, which India saw as a more important competition.
which it was at the time. the world cup was wrought with corruption at the time and the olympics were well the olympics. it's a multiple millenia tradition even at that point

The myth that india was dq'd from the 1950 world cup for mot wearing boots is false. India's Football Federation had a choice back then between the summer Olympics and the FIFA World cup, due to limited funds which could not afford to send the team to both, and they chose wrong.

Pitbull here in Brazil usually is a nickname for a Defensive Midfielder with tight marking and not very good with the ball. A player who "bites" (try to take the ball off) the ball carrier a lot. Actually a weird nickname for a GK

Watching from Brazil, many players here are known for their nickname and not their real name, the most famous recently being Dentinho (lil tooth, translating to english), who played many years for Shakhtar

From an outside perspective, I think Brazilians (idk if it's just the footballers or is it a cultural thing?) dont take name as seriously as most other nationalities. Most non-Brazilian players use their real name professionally although they may have personal nickname. (Some) Brazilian players are like _"formal names are boring, here, just use this random name my neighbours used to call me when I was 10"._ 😁
But who cares about names when they're such a joy to watch. Glad i grew up watching great players like Kaká, Ronaldinho, Juninho, Deco (none of them use their formal name).

Brazilians have some great names for several reasons (source: my gf is Brazilian):
- Expressing individuality is important
- People receive numerous nicknames over their life
- Their surnames are usually long; you take the mother's and father's surname, sometimes more
- Their surnames aren't very diverse; for example, most of the team could be "Silva" or "Santos" or something like that.
Pele is apparently called as such because his favourite player was goalkeeper Bile, and he couldn't pronounce it properly. Kaka is called this because he couldn't pronounce "Ricardo" (his actual name) as a kid.
What you'll see most commonly is the use of their first name or their first name with the suffix -inho/-inha or -ão; this means "little" or "big" respectively. So for example, Ronaldinho's real name is Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho is the combination of Ronaldo and -inho.

The "not wearing boots got them disqualified" thing is a myth, as others have pointed out. The photo you showed was from 1948, and it was only those players who chose to play barefoot during that game. They did have boots in their travel bags.
India qualified for the 1950 World Cup but their Association didn't have confidence in them so didn't send them. As a teenager who was discouraged from applying to Oxbridge by realistic parents, I feel for India.

Pitbull name for the brazilian player is because here is common a lot of player have a nickname
for example Cafú, his name is Marcos Evangelista de Morais, and Zico are Arthur Antunes Coimbra

Can you do one with Mexico? They’ve fallen off a cliff after high corruption and awful management lead to their squad having a awful mentality, awful call ups, and lack of motivation from a lot of the players now.

Its worth mentioning that they've got a strong recent history in the world cup at the point you finished the video - got to a final in 2134 and finished 3rd in 2138 😎
3:42 thats actually a myth, the real reason is that they didnt have much money, so either they could go to the world cup or the football olympics, and the chose the ladder.

What a bizarre team. They're such a random hot or cold team. They're either out early on, or they win it. That's it. (Okay. They make the quarters twice and finish 3rd once). But that's just weird. I don't know of any real-world team that is THAT inconsistent. Maybe England 😅

I dont know if this experiment is worth it, but to me India will qualify soon before 2040.. And we will have better qualification , we just need tall lads with high endurance combined with better nutrition from young age which will be fulfilled in the years to come.
We lack offensive play but our midfield and defense has improved to some extent compared to the squad 10-15 years ago. Also, once we get a breakthrough of an Indian player signed for long term in a reputed league / team the market and doors will open up and in no time our 4th reserve team will be ready for any higher ranked team..
Probably at that time, our current captain "Chhetri Bhai" is our mentor / assistant manager witnessing this from the stands
